DEDICATION IN OUR SHORT FOUR-YEAR PERIOD OF HIGH SCHOOL. THE WORLD HAS UNDERGONE EXTREME CHANGES. DIFFICULT HAS BEEN OUR STRUGGLE IN FACING THESE SERIOUS, TURBULENT CONDITIONS. MAY WE WHO HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF A BASIC EDUCATION. USE, TO THE BENEFIT OF ALL. THESE INVALUABLE EXPERIENCES IN KNOWLEDGE. ■ ■ ■ WE DEDICATE THIS YEARBOOK TO YOUTH WHO MUST FACE THE EVER-CHANGING WORLD. HOPE. FAITH AND UNITY NEED BE THEIR FORTE. MOVING ONWARD WITH A CHEERFUL. STRONG. UNITED EFFORT. MAY YOUTH MAKE ITS CONTRIBUTION TOWARD A NEW. FRUITFUL WORLD OF PEACE. A WORLD IN WHICH ALL MANKIND SHALL LIVE IN PEACEFUL HARMONY! MESSAGE GRADUATES OF 1941: ACCEPT MY SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS AND HOPES FOR STILL GREATER SUCCESSES! AS WE SCAN THE PAGES OF THESE MEMOIRS WE LIVE AGAIN OUR FOUR-YEAR EXPERIENCES. FOR YOU. MANY OF THESE ARE TOO RECENT TO APPRECIATE FULLY OR TO REGARD AS IMPORTANT. BUT AS THE COMING YEARS OF YOUR LIVES UNFOLD THEY WILL GROW IN RICHNESS AND VALUE. ■ ■ FOR ME. YOUR FRIEND AND PRINCIPAL, THERE IS NO GREATER CONCERN THAN THE ONE THAT YOU HAVE ATTAINED AND STRENGTHENED ATTITUDES SO NECESSARY IN THIS GREAT CRISIS OF THE WORLD—SUCH AS: ABSOLUTE LOYALTY TO OUR COUNTRY; A DEEPENED LOVE FOR ITS CHERISHED LIBERTIES; WILLINGNESS TO PUT THE COMMON GOOD ABOVE SELFISH DESIRES; EAGERNESS TO WORK; THE UPHOLDING OF TRUTH, JUSTICE. LAW, TOLERANCE. AND RIGHTEOUSNESS. THINK OF WHAT JOHN OXEHHAM SAYS: ■ ■ ■ WHERE ARE YOU GOING. GREAT-HEART, WITH YOUR EAGER FACE AND YOUR FIERY GRACE? TO FIGHT A FIGHT WITH ALL MY MIGHT. FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE. GOD AND RIGHT. TO GRACE ALL LIFE WITH HIS FAIR LIGHT. TO LIFT TODAY ABOVE THE PAST; TO MAKE TOMORROW SURE AND FAST; TO NAIL GOD'S COLORS TO THE MAST — THEN GOD GO WITH YOU. GREAT-HEART. RICH BLESSINGS UPON ALL OF YOU! YOUR FRIEND A. F. BITTNER MISS ELIZABETH McGAW GRACES HER POSITION AS DEAN OF GIRLS AT GRANT WITH ALL THE COMPOSURE. DIPLOMACY. COMPETENCY AND FRIENDLINESS WHICH COULD BE ASKED OF ANYONE. DIFFICULTIES. TRIVIAL OR IMPORTANT. NEVER DISTURB THE EVEN KEEL OF HER TEMPER. NOR DO THE COUNTLESS TALES OF WOE TO WHICH SHE LISTENS ALTER HER CHEERFUL FRIENDLINESS. IN ADDITION TO HER WORK AS DEAN OF GIRLS. MISS McGAW SERVES AS ADVISOR TO THE GIRLS' LEAGUE. IN APPRECIATION THE PROBLEMS AND DIFFICULT SITUATIONS WHICH FALL UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE VICE-PRINCIPAL ARE INNUMERABLE. MR. C. E. SCOTT, GRANT'S VICE-PRINCIPAL. MANAGES TO SMOOTH OUT THESE TROUBLES AND STILL FIND TIME AND PATIENCE TO BE A RESPECTED AND ADMIRED COUNSELOR TO THE BOYS. HIS SYMPATHETIC UNDERSTANDING IS HIGHLY VALUED BY THE STUDENTS. IN APPRECIATION More qualifications than impersonal efficiency are required of a really successful school office staff. The workers comprising it must be friendly, willing to help, and possess a lively sense of humor. On these scores Grant has been blessed, for each member of our office division is a capable workers and a good friend. No words of commendation are equal to the task of enumerating the services Principal A. F. Bittner performs for the school and the student body, or to express our sincere appreciation for them, and all that he does for us. Miss Helen Barley serves not only as Mr. Bittner's secretary, but as an unofficial adviser and information bureau. Because she is always ready to help, and because she's a good sport. Miss Barley is liked by everyone. Industry, efficiency and cheerful good humor earn for Mrs. Margaret Phillips and Miss Grace Pidcoe, the other two office secretaries, their share of admiration. Under the supervision of Mr. Nottage the Grant Student Body office acts as the school sales agency, stocking used books and school supplies. Student assistants working under Mr. Nottage are Dick Spooner, Jerry Leva, Eleanor King and Leona Olson. FACULTY MATHEMATICS A. B. Carter, V. Homing, whom students and teachers respected as an instructor and honored as a friend, passed away on Friday, April 4. From the date of Grant's erection, Mr. Horning contributed liberally, willingly of his hours and patience to help it grow from only a building into an institution whose influence is felt by hundreds of students each year. The deep sorrow occasioned by his death was a significant tribute to Mr. Horning, and a symbol of the sincere affection accorded him. Words seem empty when one seeks to mold them into phrases full of the praise and admiration due a friend who has died, but the sincere grief evinced at his passing is eloquent in itself. When the years have dimmed our memories of Mr. Horning, his principles and ideals will still live, instilled in the students who were guided by him. For that we are proud of the teacher whom we respected in life, and honor in death. 1 JANUARY CLASS OFFICERS President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer JANUARY Editor Assistant Editor Business Manager Sports Editor Art Editor Bill Barton Catherine Dean Barbara Kelly Ted Hedene Barton Dean MEMOIRS STAFF Ted Bittner Charles Crookham Ralph Golby Parker Watkins Paul Scranton Hedene Bittner Crookham Golby Watkins Scranton President of Student Body Wallace McCall Vice-President of Student Body Anne Wendling Secretary of Student Body Marian Carl Treasurer of Student Body Bass Dyer Assistant Treasurer of Student Body Don McCollom President of Senior Class Bill Barton President of Girls' League Virginia McPherson Editor of Grantonian George Schade Service Representative Bill Newell Athletic Representative Bill Sigurdson Allen Anderson Aplin Ash Baldwin Barton Beach Beam Borg Bergsvik Banner Bittnor Bobbett Borsting Boyd Butler Calavan Chadbournc Chaloupka Clark Cohn Coleman Converse Cooley Coon Corbin Covert Cox Crookham Cusick Dahlgren Daughtrey Dean Doherty Domrics Donnerberq Drake Durston Elliot Feldstein Floeter Ford Fraser French Geyer Gierke Golby Gordon Hagoes Hall Hedene Hiigol Hcnshaw Hereford Hinish Hooper Horton Hutchinson Innes Johnson Joubert Kahlor Kelly Kenney Konstad Kraus Lockman Lansworth Larson Linde Lung Macpherson Magotte McBride McCall McEachron McEntee Merker Meyer Morgan Namitz Neeb Nelson Noonan Oliver Orton Perelle Pitblado Pretzel Reed Reese Roborts Robertson. Room Pictures ill 3 9 137 139 203 133 147 214 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT S We, the editors of the 1941 Memoirs, owe a debt of gratitude which can never be repaid. We shall merely attempt to express it. There seems to be a general belief that a teacher's working hours are devoted exclusively to teaching school. “Erroneous is a very mild term to apply to that rumor. Our teachers' days are filled with a hundred and one activities which may be classed as service— service to their pupils and to their school. The members of our faculty never receive recognition for this service, yet day after day, year after year, they give generously of their time and energy to the promotion of extra-curricular activities. The publication of Memoirs is an outstanding example of a project which could never be carried out without the invaluable advice and aid of several members of our faculty. To Miss Ethel Clarke, Miss Irene Wuest and Miss Libbie Krichesky we are deeply grateful. Amid the ringing of hammers and the rasping of saws. Miss Clarke was never too busy to discuss a matter of policy or offer a timely word of advice. Her patient guidance was invaluable. Miss Wuest found time to keep a watchful eye on all the Memoirs art work in spite of the hustle and bustle of spring term activities in her department. Without her skillful planning Memoirs would have been the horror of the ages, artistically speaking. Miss Krichesky cheerfully accepted the terrific job of supervising the sales campaign and the bookkeeping department. For her wholehearted cooperation in all matters concerning Memoirs, and her efficient management of the sales campaign we are truly grateful. We also owe a sincere vote of thanks to the Memoirs contact committee whose untiring efforts made this year's Memoirs a financial success. —The Editors. MAY FETE Queen Marion Harris, who ruled supreme at Grant for one day, was as lovely and gracious a monarch as any kingdom ever boasted. Her subjects all bowed willingly to this charming queen of the 1941 May Fete. ROSE FESTIVAL In electing Mary Jane Rabbe for its Rose Festival princess, the Grant student body assured itself of being represented by a girl whose loveliness and poise will make her a distinctive member of the 1941 Rose Festival court. OPERETTA Leaving memories of wooden shoes and windmills, Victor Herbert's operetta, The Red Mill, lavishly sprinkled with tuneful melody, colorful costumes and droll Dutch humor, was presented Friday and Saturday evenings. May 23 and 24, by the a cappella choir and school orchestra. Two American tourists, stranded in the quaint little town of Kat-wyk-ann-zee, Holland, are forced to work as waiters in the village inn to pay off their indebtedness. Their scheme to save the Burgomaster's daughter from a distasteful marriage leads to complications which result in one of the most delightful of the Herbert operettas. ‘Con Kidder “Kid Conner Ian Van Borken Franz Willem CAST Jack Feary Francis Brooks Ralph Ohling Frank Quinlan Ben Strobach Captain Doris Van Damm Governor of Zeeland Gretchen Berth Tina Vernon Garrett Emanuel Nudelman Janet Winkler Joy Tooze Carol Buttelwerth and Wesley Williams. DRAMA This year the drama department, under Miss Marie Churchill, organized a new club, the Grant Dramateurs. In two units, theatre and radio, the club was able to do much in bringing honor to Grant. An electrical transcription of three scenes from Macbeth, made by the group in early fall, won honors at the National Council of English Teachers in Chicago. In April, the students presented Macbeth before the Inland Empire Teachers' Association and station KFPY in Spokane. A transcription of Dickens' Christmas Carol was made in December, and was sent to the National Radio conference in Columbus, Ohio. The Carol won national citation in a field of three hundred entries. As their major theatrical project of the year, the Dramateurs presented the first play ever done in Portland high schools in informal style. The production was Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, the third act of which was given as a demonstration of high school drama work for the State Theatre Conference. As the climax of their year's work, the Grant Dramateurs presented Thorton Wilder's Happy Journey as a part of the entertainment for the coronation ceremonies of this year's May Fete. Varsity Basketball Varsity Baseball Varsity Track GOLF Continuing their splendid record. Grant's hard hitting golf team again captured the Interscholastic title in both the boys' and girls' division, to make it three in a row. Under the careful coaching of Mr. C. B. May, the Generals have come through to win their matches with ease. This year's team consisted of Bill Knapp, captain; Vincent Legler, Don Henkle and George Keep. Alternates Larry Ohlson and Dick Robertson also saw action. TENNIS The Grant tennis team started off the season without a coach and with only one returning letter-man. The sudden death of Coach E. E. Horning, who in eleven years coached ten championship teams, saddened the entire school. Miss L. Hill stepped in, took over the team and steered them to five wins and one loss, up to the time of this writing. This year's team consisted of Bob Grant, captain; Merrill Ehmke, Bob Wolford, Jerry Golby and John Seigle and Don Gassner alternates. Next year's prospects look good, with Bob Wolford, Jerry Golby and Don Gassner all returning. COACHES Coach Mush Torson's casaba-tossing Generals slipped a cog this year. Yes, they climbed down the ladder one whole rung to land in third place. Terrible, isn't it? Hats off to Mush and his hard-fighting boys. They took a little tough luck in their stride and landed squarely on their feet, right in the Big Three. Again this year. Track Coach Paul Warren's boys took the bit in their teeth and romped away with all the honors. Since Coach Warren took over Grant's track team, winning has practically become traditional. In view of his past and future successes, we hereby dub him Grant's Wonder Boy. The Grant sluggers, under Coach Charlie Orr, had slammed their way into fourth place at the time of this writing. Grant's baseball teams, skillfully piloted by Coach Orr, have been steadily improving and are expected to sprout championship material in the near future. Three cheers for the Tiger, who coached the Grant pigskin toters right into a championship triangle this season. We are still congratulating ourselves on the stroke of good luck that brought Jerry Tiger Lillie to Grant four years ago. Through tireless work and cheerful encouragement he has given Grant four snappy teams, topped off by this year's champions. FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS GRANT 12. JEFFERSON 0 Fighting Jefferson's Democrats off their feet. Grant's Generals upset the highly praised Jeffmen, 12-0, to remain at the top of the league. In the first quarter McFadden's 55-yard quick kick was the outstanding play. Second quarter. Grant stopped Jeff cold on the Generals' 10-yard line. Recovering a fumble on the Jeff 44, McFadden tossed a pass to Vandenburgh, who snagged the ball from a cluster of Jeffmen, about-faced and sprinted 35 yards for a touchdown. Third quarter. Bob Morrison raced 64 yards on the first play of the second half to put the Generals ahead by 12 points. Fourth quarter. Grant drove to the Jeff 7, but lost the ball on downs. The rest of the game was played in Jeff territory as the Demos tried in vain to crack the Generals' defense. GRANT 38. FRANKLIN 0 Roll that score up to the sky was the theme of the Lilliemen as they trounced a helpless Quaker eleven to the tune of 38-0. Behind brilliant blocking and perfectly executed plays the Generals first, second and third teams piled up the tremendous score. The scoring was not confined only to the first string, as the third string pushed across two touchdowns of their own in the final period. The Generals were definitely on the march to the league championship in this game. GRANT 0. BENSON 19 With a 7-point handicap from the opening night against them the blue and gray fell to defeat before a powerful Benson machine. 19-0, thus ending a most successful season in a tie for the league championship with Jefferson and Benson. Jim Pettit, the Tech tornado, raced around and over Grant's line for 12 points, which, added to the previously scored 7 points, left the G-men on the short end, 19-0. Benson's powerful line combined with their fleet halfback, Pettit, kept Grant on the defensive the best part of the afternoon. Only once did the G-men show a spark and then a slippery ball spelled doom to their efforts. GRANT 12, WAITE 20 Waite high school of Toledo, Ohio, came out to Portland to play Grant and before they had gone home they realized that they had met up with a team that was well deserving of the honor of representing Portland. Starting off fast, the G-men scored first on a spectacular 65-yard end run by Punchy Morrison who was aided by some beautiful blocking which knocked every Waite man off his feet. Waite came back quickly with a long pass from Sharkoff to a waiting teammate in the end zone. The half ended with Waite ahead. 7-6. The second half saw the larger Waite team pull ahead and finally win the game, but not until Grant had once more taken the lead, 12-7. Combining smashing power plays with a flashing passing attack, the Ohioans scored two touchdowns to lead, 20-12. Late in the game Bob Morison took the ball on a statue of Liberty play and raced 40 yards before he was stopped just short of a touchdown. BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS GRANT 21. JEFFERSON 22 Jeff's hoopmen edged out a persistent Grant team.22 to 21. Both teams played tight defensive ball and neither team was able to secure any sizable lead, the half ending with Grant in front, 10 to 9. The third quarter found Jeff ahead. 18-16. The fourth period moved at a snail's pace with neither team hitting the basket; in the closing minutes Neale, Grant center, sank a foul shot to put the Generals ahead, 21 to 20, but this lead was nullified when a Jeff player sank two free throws to win the game. GRANT 41, WASHINGTON 8 In the most surprising game of the season for Grant's quintet, the Generals blasted the Washington Colonials off the floor, 41-8. Combining a smooth-working offense with an air-tight defense the G-men amassed this amazing score. Grant was lead by Konstad, who hit the hemp for 12 points, and Tag McFadden, who accounted for 11 counters. GRANT 24. ROOSEVELT 22 Warming up by degrees, the casaba-tossing Grantonians knocked off Roosevelt's title-aspiring Rough-riders, 24-22. Although not a high-scoring game, the play was packed with action. The end of the first half found Roosevelt leading, 13-7. Coming back from the halftime, the Generals looked like a new team as they pushed and finally passed the Roughriders to take the game in the last minutes of play. For the first time in the history of the prep league, three teams tied for first place and each were awarded champijnship cups. LINCOLN 0 Playing air-tight ball on the defensive, and using their big guns to the best advantage, the G-men downed the Lincoln Cards, 5-0. Konstad started the ball rolling in the first inning by hitting a single down the third base line. Later in the first inning Bass Dyer hit a hard single over the second baseman's head, scoring Alfano and Kuzman. Altogether the Generals made four runs in the first inning. In the sixth, Alfono scored again to make the score 5-0. George Watkins pitched close ball all the way, and only once was in trouble. GRANT 4, JEFFERSON 9 Shopkin started but was relieved by Sampson in the fifth. Konstad of Grant scored the first run of the game but this lead was soon erased by a barrage of Jeff runs. Mclrvin, the Demos star chucker, held the Generals well in check and only Ned Clark was able to hit him. GRANT 1. ROOSEVELT 0 Still trying hard, the Grant boys kept down the Roughriders, 1-0, behind the four-hit pitching of George Watkins. Grant's run came in the tenth inning when Taylor singled. The G-men were able to advance to third, but only once succeeded in pushing a man home. TRACK H I G H L I G H T S CITY RELAYS Sweeping aside all competition, the Generals again won the city relays. The G-men's chief strength seemed to be in the longer distances, with the Generals taking first place in both the mile and two-mile relays. The 440 and 880 teams took second place behind Benson's speedy relay teams. Grant's other first place came in the shotput, with the weightmen throwing the old iron ball out for a total distance of 175 feet 3% inches. The juniors did equally as well as the varsity, taking the honors in their division. TRIANGULAR MEET, APRIL 18 Grant's cinder men were again on their way to the prep track championship, as they walked away with the honors in their first triangular meet with Franklin and Washington, taking 911 2 points, to their nearest competitor's, Franklin's, 27 points. Outstanding in the day's activities were the performances of Bill Huff and Tag McFadden of Grant. Bill high-jumped 5 feet 11% inches into the stratosphere to beat the city record, which was established in 1925. Huff's mark, however, will not be put in the books because it was not established at the city meet. Tag McFadden's 2:01.6 in the 880-yard dash beat the Grant record by .9 of a second, and was the fastest half mile ever run on the Commerce track. The juniors again came through to take their division. TRIANGULAR MEET. MAY 9 Meeting their toughest competition of the season, the Generals beat out Benson's Techmen and Lincoln 64, 49, 13. As was expected, the Techmen took the sprints and their individual stars stood out. But the fine teamwork of Grant's cinder-men spelled doom for both Lincoln and Benson. Dale Vandenburgh was the big gun for Grant, placing second in the broad jump, first in the high hurdles, and third in the 220-yard low hurdles. SPORTS CANDIDS 1. Last mile 2. Alley-Ooop 3. Zowie! 4.
