THE MASSIVE COLUMNS, THE SEA GULLS ON VACATION, THE PLAYS, THE CHRISTMAS PROGRAM, THE CARNEGIE ART LIBRARY, AND SETTINGS OF SCHOOL SPIRIT IN THE CANDID SHOTS WILL BE ON HAND THROUGHOUT THE YEARS TO REFRESH THE SENIORS' MEMORY AND TO FAMILIARIZE EVERY UNDERGRADUATE WITH THE HAPPINESS WHICH IS BROUGHT BY SCHOOL ASSOCIATIONS. WITH FOND HOPES THAT THE OWNER OF THIS BOOK WILL ENJOY AND KEEP IT, WE REMAIN, SINCERELY. THE STAFF frPvy , i ( v JANUARY 1939 SENIORS ARE ESPECIALLY PROUD OF THE ANDREW CARNEGIE ART REFERENCE LIBRARY PRESENTED TO GRANT THIS FALL. Grant drew the Quakers in an unusual five-quarter contest, the first quarter being played in the opening night of the football season. Grant outdid Franklin in everything except scoring. Two costly first quarter breaks set up the Franklin scores and victory. The desperate Generals scored late in the last period on a pass. 41-0 COMMERCE Sherman's march to the sea was a dog-trot in comparison to the G-men's trampling Commerce. From the outset all could see that the victory hungry Grayghosts were not to be denied. Withers, Armstrong, Conser, Johnson and Stamm took advantage of the field day to score for Grant. 19-0 ROOSEVELT With a clean-cut victory over Roosevelt's Roughriders, the G-men climbed into second place to bolster their aspiration. Scores were registered by Armstrong, Friedman, and on Hooper's recovery of a Roosevelt fumble behind the goal line. 14-0 WASHINGTON Lacking the brilliance with which they had won the last two previous games, the silver Generals were forced to battle hard for their 14-point conquest. Takeoka scored first. The second tally came after a seventy-yard drive with Armstrong scoring and Withers converting. 6-6 BENSON In the most grueling contest of the current season Grant met the Benson Mechanics and was held to a lone score tie. Either team could have won the game with a successful place kick. The Generals scored first on their famous sweep play. Late in the fourth quarter the Bensoni-ans desperately put their prayers on a fourth-down pass from the Grant 15. Perryman made a sensational catch for their touchdown. The kick was blocked. LINCOLN till with hopes of climbing to the top, the Generals chalked up their fourth victory at the iplitters' expense. Friedman scored in the second quarter. After a sustained drive, Arm-ig scored Grant's second touchdown. Collin passed to Slocum for the extra point. The score came in the fourth period on Friedman's 17-yard end run. EFFERSON i the final contest of the '38 season the Lillie-boys met the age-old rivals, the Democrats fferson. Before the game had progressed eight minutes Jeff had crossed the Grant goal he game's only score and Jefferson's third consecutive league championship. After Ell sd for Jeff, there came Grant's golden opportunity following a fumble on Jeff's 33, but offensive attack bogged down. o ended the 1938 campaign with Grant perched in third place with five victories, two ats and a tie to follow Jefferson and Franklin. pecial mention must be given to: Eric Armstrong, the hardest hitting tackier in the league city all-star halfback; Captain Vic Collin, the team's brains, who piloted the squad ugh a successful season; Tacklers Foster, Rattan, Hoff and Phillips; Andy Jones, a con-nt passing center and rugged line tackier; John Slocum, the find of the season, whose nsive prowess will be remembered by all; Chuck Hooper and Jim Bennison, two fighting ds; Bob Withers, most versatile squad man and recipient of the Dorman award; Benny iman, a smooth running cut-back artist and exceptional southpaw passer; Kay Takeoka, markable broken field runner. m: it t: mu General cinder stars burned up the track in five major clashes in the fall track season of inder the sterling tutelage of Coach James Pelley. i the opening fracas the boys of the blue and gray edged out Lincoln in a close contest, le cross-country event Jim McGregor placed second; Slatky, fourth, and Broderick, fifth, junior cross-country saw Ohling, Feary and Putnam place fourth, fifth and sixth, re-tively. lolloping McGregor led the G-men on to their second victorious cross-country jaunt by ling home first in a two-mile run to establish a new record.
