OURS HAS BEEN AN EASY LOT. HARDER, BY FAR, HAS BEEN THAT OF OUR PARENTS, WHO HAVE FOUGHT, UNTIRINGLY, A BATTLE AGAINST THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF A WORLD WIDE DEPRESSION IN ORDER THAT WE MIGHT ENJOY THE PRIVILEGE OF A BASIC EDUCATION. WE ARE ACUTELY AWARE OF THE FUTILITY OF ANY OUTWARD EXPRESSION OF APPRECIATION, BUT OUR GRATITUDE CAN BE SHOWN IN AN INFINITELY SMALL WAY BY DEDICATING THE JANUARY I937 MEMOIRS TO THEM, OUR NOBLEST HERITAGE. ' IF -. I I.-1 . - 1 uvf:f'm5-U' 'J A, 5e4,z'?qe,f? 'ggr,g:'!:3 O ES E U GRADUATION IS VERY PERSONAL AND THEREFORE VERY MEANINGFUL. IT IS MORE THAN A FORM, MORE THAN A PROGRAM FOLLOWED BY THE RECEIVING OF A DIPLOMA. IT IS AN EXPERIENCE OF GREAT HAPPINESS BECAUSE OF THE REALIZATION OF A GOAL, THE ACHIEVEMENTIOF SUCCESS RESULTING FROM REAL EFFORT, THE HEARING OF WORDS, WELL DONE, AND THE SATISFACTION THAT PARENTS AND FRIENDS ARE PLEASED. 9 0 0 YOUR YEARS AT GRANT ARE IM- PORTANT ONES. YOU HAVE CHANGED RAPIDLY, MADE MANY FRIENDS, AND HAD MANY IMPORTANT EXPERIENCES. MORE AND MORE FROM NOW ON YOU WILL BE THROWN UPON YOUR OWN AND ALL OF US CRAVE FOR YOU THE ABILITY AND COURAGE TO SUCCEED .IN WORTHY ENDEAVORS. SOCIETY NEEDS STRONG, WELL- EOUIPPED, HIGH-PRINCIPLED YOUTH -BUILDERS OF JUSTICE, PURITY, AND PEACE. YOU CAN BE SUCH. 0 AS WE LOOK OvER THE LIST OF YOUR CLASS WE SEE MANY WHO WERE OUTSTANDING IN DEMOCRATIC CITIZENSHIP, AND WHO GAVE RICHLY TO OUR BEST LIFE. WE THANK YOU FOR THAT CONTRIBUTION. TO THOSE WHO MAY NOTRHAVE STOOD OUT BY REASON OF ELECTED POSITION, SCHOLARSHIP, OR SPECIAL ACTIVITY, ON BEHALF OF THE .SCHOOL WE EXPRESS OUR APPRECIATION OF YOUR HELPEULNESS, SINCERE FRIENDSHIP, LOYALTY, AND DEVOTION TO DUTY. 0 RICH BLESSINOS UPON THE JANUARY CLASS OF I937. This in short was the theme of the June 1937 Senior Class play, Caught Wet, presented April 16 and 17 in the U. S. Grant High School auditorium to capacity audiences. Yet it is an inadequate description, for its does not express the intense excitement, the baffling mystery, the hilarious comedy, and the gay romance involved in this portrayal of a quarter million dollar pearl robbery, which was not a robbery after all. Thanks to the usual brilliant directing of Miss Marie Churchill, to the whole-hearted cooperation of the production staff, and to the earnest hard work and inspired interpretations of the cast, Caught Wet kept two full houses enthralled from beginning to end. And a sad glance it is. The horrible facts are — four wins, ten losses. One needn't be too discouraged, however, for the much trampled Roosevelt team, which finished in last place, added another fourteen consecutive defeats to its already much besmirched record running its total to fifty-eight. Grant's victims this season were Roosevelt twice and Benson and Lincoln once each. For the Generals though it may be said that they did their best but the combination of a weak center position, and injuries were just too much. The boys had a game fighting spirit—the kind that makes a game interesting even if they are outclassed. This was particularly demonstrated in as classy a battle as Grant has ever witnessed when the Generals roared up in from behind to overtake a high-flying Lincoln quintet. The Cardinals, supposedly invincible proved unequal to the task of stopping the Generals once they got hot. Grant also took Benson into camp in a pretty game on the Grant court. Against Roosevelt the Grant machine showed evidences of power which too often were lacking against other opponents. Grant's excuses if we must offer them were (I), a very weak center position, and (2), injuries to players. The center position, as had been expected, proved Coach Rohwer's greatest stumbling block. A number of men were tried, but all failed in some manner. Injuries also damaged the team. At the beginning of the season Genial Gene Spiker was hindered by a sore foot. After the fourth game of the season, Walt Daggat also suffered an injury to his foot and was out the remainder of the season. This left Grant with only one experienced reserve. Individually the Generals played well. Gene Spiker and Mai Blackburn were two of the most effective guards in the league as attested by the low scores made by the men they checked. Spiker played his usual, consistently good game, while Blackburn, the surprise of the team showed beautiful defensive work, and, on occasions, offensively also. Edwards and Eivers played well in the forward slots, until Eivers was shifted to stop the hole at center. Edwards led the team in scoring. Those receiving letters were: Spiker, Blackburn, Edwards, Eivers, Russell, Huggins, Daggat, Scott, Kennelly, Shimshak and Dunn, The unluckiest team of this year's sports calendar is without a doubt the baseball team. Errors at the wrong times, hits likewise, and batting slumps are just a few of these. • Led by Gene Spiker and Marvin Scott, the Generals should be one of the heaviest hitting teams in the league. However, several of these boys who should have had opposing fielders diziy are merely creating great cavities in the atmosphere around the plate. The boys, however, clearly demonstrated that they do know what a bat is for when they recently pounded four Benson pitchers for twenty-six hits in six innings and had the Tech fielders yelling uncle. The score, by far the largest this season, was 23-7. Perhaps the greatest weakness of the team rested in the pitching staff. Genial Gene Spiker was the backbone, being principally supported by Kallio and Davenport. If there is anyone who doubts the quality of Spiker's pitching he needed only to be present at the Grant-Washington game. In this game Gene came at the start of the last inning absolutely cold and promptly struck out two men, getting the third on an easy grounder. Also in the Commerce game Spiker struck out eleven men in seven innings. The Generals seemed to show a preference for the slants of the Benson team, winning both games with them—one by the score of 3-0, and the other 23-7. Thus far they have also beaten Roosevelt 6-5 and Commerce 7-2. With two games yet remaining they have a mathematical chance of finishing fourth. I It 1 C K Under the capable coaching of Jim Pelley the track team this year has rounded into one of the best I ever turned out at Grant. Thus far this season, the boys have stormed their way to seven successive triumphs, in addition to a correspondence meet with the powerful Lincoln High of Seattle. Not only I that—the Generals look invincible in the City meet, and at this writing are possible state champions. The power of the Grant squad rests in the distance and field events. This is most evident in the | mile and shot put. In the latter, Bill Regner has yet to take his first licking. In the mile, Brice Smith and Jim Munroe compose two of the smoothest striding runners in the state. Nor by any means is this all. ■ Bob Turner in the 440-yard dash has shown enough speed to press Eagleton, the state champion, and I thereby stamp himself as a dangerous man. The potency of the relay teams is clearly illustrated by the fact that in the City Relays, Grant took eleven out of fifteen first places. But like all good things they I must end. The darker spots start here. In the State meet, three of Grant's stars will be missing. These are Jack Edwards, Pete Riley, and the captain of the team, Ken Thompson. These boys are leaving for I jobs in Alaska, and therefore will not be able to compete. Last year Thompson finished fourth in the half mile and was a prospect for first place this year. Jack Edwards was leading individual scorer in a I recent meet, and Pete Riley was anchor man in the powerful 440-yard relay team. Needless to say, these losses will put a serious dent in the Generals’ scoring power. Whether Coach Pelley can find men f to fill the gap, only time can tell. ' In the junior events, Grant again monopolized the field. Starring for them were Findlay, Slatky, . Pendergrass, Likens, and Dave Edwards. Perhaps the most impressive win of the season was scored by the junior two-mile relay team. Led by Likens, huge all-around junior athlete, this team broke the former two-mile relay record by the amazing total of thirty-four secondsl The anchor man came home over two hundred yards in advance of his nearest competitor. Before we close this year, however, let every loyal Grant track fan congratulate Coach Pelley on his auspicious start. May his future teams be as good as the present. I TENNIS SOCCER GOLF 4p I It I ' TEMIWIX Losing only to the Lincoln and Jefferson girls, Grant's feminine racket swingers wound up in third place in the interscholastic standings. No team succeeding in taking three straight matches. However, the lady Generals whitewashed Washington and Roosevelt. In addition they beat Commerce and Franklin. The team was made up of Dot Snyder, number one; Helen Wright, number two; Jerry Cohen, number three doubles; Eileen Eschback, number four doubles, and Charlotte Ostrom, alternate. Considering that Dot Snyder was the only returning letterman, the team did remarkably well. Prospects for next year are very bright. SOCCER At the close of the recent soccer season, Grant occupied third place in the league standings. Although they failed to place first, any and all Grantonians can be properly proud of these boys. Playing with very little honor in the form of crowds, and certainly in the worst part of the year to be outside, they demonstrated that Grant students are far from sissies. On several occasions these mudsters displayed a good bit of class. Notable among these were both games played against Commerce. Inasmuch as Commerce ended up in first place these games clearly showed Grant's power. The first game at Commerce ended two to one in favor of the Stenogs. It was in this game that the Stenogs resorted to strategy to win. With Grant leading one to nothing at the half, the Commerce boys came out in tennis shoes, and, since the ground was frozen, promptly ran circles around the Generals. The second game ended tied at one all after another brilliant game. The Generals also played well in both games against Jefferson. For Grant, the outstanding star was the mighty Jack Shaw. For the second year running Shaw made the first string all-star team. Dean Olsen and Bob Meyers landed berths on the second team. Those who made letters are: Shaw, Vic Nudelman, Curtis Pederson, Dean Olsen, Bob Meyers, Ted Gerow, Ed Wochus, Eric Armstrong, Bill Smith, George Millet, Eddie Adams, Bob Turner, Al Schmidt, Lloyd Solomon, Harold Helfonts, Lee Faster, Jack Coonan, Clinton McGill, Jack Jacobsen, George Strong and John McCollum. ■BOY ’ F F M M ■ X For the ninth year in the history of Grant, the boys' tennis team has coasted home with the interscholastic championship. The team won nine consecutive matches, losing none, and no Grant player lost to his opponent. Collectively they scored thirty-three victories without a defeat. Victims were Salem, Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt, Jefferson, Commerce, Benson, Columbia and Franklin. The boys composing the team were Emery Neale, number one; Jack McClimet, number two; Ernie Knoff, number three doubles; Dick Phillippi, number four doubles, and Kermit Smith, alternate. The number one and two positions on the team were determined by a flip of the coin when rain prevented a deciding match. Neale rolled up the impressive record of never having lost a set. Jack McClimet, the number two player, marred his record by a tendency to enjoy the game and as a result queer scores like 6-0, 0-6, 6-0 were not unusual. Mr. E. E. Horning coached the team and the record speaks vociferously for his ability. IB O If m 9 O O F F The Grant Divot Diggers Society, playing in hard luck, have lost three consecutive matches and the outlook at present is not very bright. Commerce, Washington and Jefferson are the teams who have shown a collective clean pair of heels. Against Jefferson, the G-men were barely nosed out 5 2 to 6 2- Yet to be played are games with Lincoln and Benson. ■ IB I S ’ O O L F Due to a conspiracy by Jupe Pluvius against them, the girls' golf team has completed only one match at this writing. That was a tie with Washington. This year the girls are being coached by Ted Rohwer. Coach Rohwer starts off in a tough spot since there are only two returning lettermen—or letterwomen as you will—namely, Margaret Crosbie and Nancy Lewis. These two, in addition to Norma Holmes, Mary Adams, Virginia Malloy and Jane Smith, made up the team.
