MEMOIRS PUBLISHED SEMI-ANNUALLY ULYSSES S. GRANT HIGH SCHOOL PORTLAND-OREGON SENIOR CLASS JANUARY 1935 DEDICATION T O T A L E N T N A T U R E'S D O W E R T O YOUTH ■ ■ ■ 1 N THE LI G H T O F T R U T H - ■ s O M E H O U R MAY 1 T 1 N T O GENIUS FLOWER MESSAGE Three hundred years ago the first secondary school of our country was organized. The idea of free education was a new one, especially above the elementary level, but now yearly thousands of young people finish their four years of training in these people-supported schools. You are a vital part of that great army ready for the next higher unit of our educational system or ready to enter some form of profitable employment. We who have directed your stay within this school have watched your marked development; we realize, with pleasure, your growth in experience, in ability to meet problems, in a grasp of the fundamentals of some of the great fields of knowledge; a growth in ability to use our mother tongue in speech or writing; in ability to understand the economic and social problems of our day. We also trust that into your lives has come a great unswerving determination to advance those elements of culture, of refinement, of worthy ideals that will uplift our race. We trust you have developed many of the finer, the abiding spiritual values of life. You have made a real contribution to Grant High School by your participation in all of its activities. You have left conspicuous records in scholarship, journalism, student body organization, debate, dramatics, art, music, manual arts, club work, and athletics. Your wholesome enthusiastic leadership in the school's life has been appreciated. Your class play will stand out among the very best given at Grant. These short four years spent here have passed but they shall live on into your and our future. Farewell! Our best wishes go with you to real success! —A. F. Bittner. In dedicating this volume of Memoirs to Talent we are not presuming to ignore the fine things that high school has done for us, the graduating class. It is customary to write an appreciation of the inspiration our teachers have been to us, of the devotion our parents have shown us, or of the fellowship we have enjoyed with our classmates. However, great as are these gifts, high school can do nothing more for us than to discover and to develop our inherent talents. It is the shoulder of Talent—active Talent—at the wheel that keeps the machinery of progress moving. Nothing can bring greater hope or faith to man than the vision of Talent soaring to those heights where it becomes a glory—nothing greater despair than the sight of Talent mired and lost. Whether this soul-imbedded seed may in the proper atmosphere yet blossom into true genius; whether, like the down of a peach, it will be rubbed off in the rough passing of this world; whether it be smothered by circumstances or ripened by opportunity—this rests with us, and with Fate. —The Editors. We leave after four years of being together, Now singing a song in thy praise. We'll always remember, keep glowing the ember That flamed in our happiest days. ■ BATTLING THE BILLOWS The roll and rumble of tumbling waves, The rise and fall of the deep, The whistling wind and the stinging rain, The deck's tipping, crazily steep; The lash of the spray with its blinding sting As it cuts across the face, The lurch of the ship as it heaves with the sea, And battles the salt embrace. But after the storm a gentle calm When sunlit shines the sea, The seagulls' graceful diving down In screaming ecstasy. 'Tis life, this battling with the waves, This wild and stormy strife, The loud wind's answer from the caves To the roar of the deep and the rife. But when it is passed we think of the guide, The man at the helm, his strength, His love and his will, and a tested skill That brought us through at length. Let wild winds howl and billows roll, The rain lash, and the sleet— My Captain's true; I'm in His hold. He'll guide me o'er the deep. —Elizabeth Kennington. CLASS COLORS: TURQUOISE BLUE - SILVER CLASS PLAY H '' T H E P A T S Y The jinx of illness and postponement which hampered the production of Barry Conners' play, The Patsy, during the weeks of rehearsal was unable to spoil the final presentation of that unusually well-received and entertaining comedy of American family-life. Under the direction of Miss Marie Churchill, ten actors and actresses of the Senior class of January, 1935, presented the popular Patsy during the afternoon and evening of December 7, 1934. With shaky hands, moistened brow, and tearful eye, we do leave to our joyous mourners, the coming Senior class, our old haunts and habits—viz., putting Miss Griggs in a daily dilemma; our hog-calling tendencies in center hall; our freedom to roam the halls at will, thus distracting agitated reg. teachers and those whose rooms border our raucous path, and so on, far into the night. As to more material legacies, we do will, with much delight and a misplaced sense of humor, the following to the sundry individuals mentioned herein. Pat White bequeaths her collection of riding ribbons to Jane Sterratt. Ruth Kauffman sends her athletic zeal to Marilyn Tennant. Marsh Hoffman gives his argumentative ability to John Porter. Bill Cornthwaite donates his willingness to cooperate to Betty Wetterborg. Barbara Senders gives her dexterity in disrupting the library to her younger sister, Betty. Bertyl Dubiver hands her worry, worry, worry to Marjorie Schmitt. Jack Laird sends his sport scoops to the next Grantonian staff. Nann Brownlie wills her crown to all prospective queens. Truxton Ringe gives his height to Alan Crosbie. Jack Ditewig passes his schoolgirl complexion on to Bob Falkenhagen. Bob Dusenbery leaves his queer name to Lucille Jungck. Doris Enke gives her inspiring deportment grades to Jane Hanawalt. Martha Howes wills her banana-milk diet to Tom Bishop. Tom Miller sends his booming voice to Marjorie McLoughlin. Ted Wassard donates his fondness for shivering Fords to Larry de la Fontaine. Betty Lou Drake gives her get-your-man tactics to Dorothy Sutton. FOOTBALL Completing his second season at the helm of the Grant football squad, Head Coach Ted Rohwer piloted one of the finest bunches of gridders ever to wear the blue and gray to a second place finish in the Interscholastic league. The 1934 campaign was the most successful that the General gridiron forces have experienced in many an autumn, and much of the credit should go to Coach Rohwer and to Assistant Coach Ray Wolfe. Emerging the victors five times, Grant won more games than any other team in the league. The final standing of the teams was: Washington W 4 L 1 T 2 Pet .800 Grant 5 2 0 .714 Lincoln 4 1 2 .667 Roosevelt 3 2 2 .600 Jefferson 2 2 2 .500 Commerce 2 4 1 .333 Franklin 2 5 0 .286 Benson 1 5 0 .167 Note.—Jefferson-Benson game declared no contest. RESUME O F SEASON'S GAM ■ n i Grant 19 Longview 0 Making Their season's debut againsi Longview Coach Rohwer's Generais won an impressive 19 to 0 victory over the Lumberjacks. Earl Dusenbery scored the first Grant touchdown of the ,ear when he galloped 25 yards to the goal line after receiving a pass from Bill Gleason. The other touchdowns were counted by Gleason on a buck through the line and by Ed Strohecker on a blocked kick. Strohecker place-kicked the point after the first touchdown. Grant 17 Commerce 8 The Stenogs of Commerce almost spoiled the blue and gray's Interscholastic league opener, but not quite. The game was not five minutes old when Earl Dusenbery took Gleason's pass in the end zone for a touchdown. Ed Strohecker converted with a perfect place kick. However. Commerce came back to score a touchdown and a safety to jump into an 8 to 7 lead. Still trailing with only five minutes of play remaining and holding the ball on the Penpushers' 23-yard ine, the Generais staked Their chances on The aec.rate right foot of Ed Strohecker and the giant tackle did not fail his Team mares, booting a bea_v field goal from placement. Sranr 0 Roosevelt 20 Victims of one of me oiggesr upsets of ’he year, Grant's silver-heimeted warriors were trampled 20 to 0 by a vasny under-rated Roosevelt eleven. Downhearted over Tneir previous weer. s loss to Jemersen, the beys yielded a -ouchdown early in the inif a; quarter and were unable to catch up. Grant 0 Lincoln 2 Playing one of their best games of the season, the Generals were the victims of some tough breaks and had to bow to Lincoln 2 tc 0. Blocking a kick early in the second quarter in the Grant end zone, the Cards, although completely outplayed, clung to their narrow lead to eke out the win. Grant 13 Franklin 2 Coming back with vengeance, Ted Rohwer's victory-hungry stalwarts took out their wrath on the hapless Quakers of Franklin. Ripping off tackle at will for big gains, Bill Gleason twice crossed the maroon and gray goal line. Strohecker's place kick after the second touchdown accounted for the thirteenth point. Grant 13 Washington 7 Closing the season against their traditional rivals, the Colonials of Washington, the Generals trotted out onto the gridiron full of pep and confidence, refusing to be overawed by the Colonials' unbeaten record. After a scoreless first quarter the blue and gray gridmen suddenly went wild, and over the champions' goal line went first Bill Gleason and then Earl Dusenbery. Ed Strohecker sent the pigskin straight between the goal posts for the extra point after the second score. Playing the second half in a driving rain, the Generals saw Eldon Jenne's title-bound eleven narrow the gap to six points in the third quarter, and then came back to play the big maroon machine off its feet in the final quarter to end their season in a blaze of glory and to register the most stunning upset of the entire year. In addition to the personal trophy, Jack's name was placed on the large plaque kept at school. Selected on the various all-star teams picked by Portland newspapers were Bob McCalley, veteran center, and Bill Gleason, dashing halfback. The playing of these two boys stood out in every game that Grant played. Bob Elliott, with 2500 cheering throats aiding him, won the yell leaders' contest sponsored by the Portland Chamber of Commerce, between halves at the opening game of the Interscholastic football league, winning for himself the title of yell king of the city and for Grant the permanent possession of a silver cup. The Schubert cup, given to that member of the glee club who has been of outstanding service to the school, musically, was awarded to Mary Brassfield.
