I was really excited when the first day came around. Everyone was very friendlyg I saw so many new faces . I felt like a Freshman, especially when someone came up to me and asked if I wanted to buy an elevator pass . They said I would need to take the elevator to get to the swimming pool. I didn't think it was worth it since the only stroke I knew was the dog paddle. r,- , As the year Went by I be- came familiar with the Stu- dents and the school. just as I was getting used to the time schedule for my classes, they went and changed it on me. Then when I got used to enjoying 10 minutes between 4A, 4B, and 4C they changed it again. I am really glad they finally made up their minds . o Along with the confusion of the time schedule, we had 4 snow days this year. When the news of no school - leaked out, the students were jumping around like my friends do when they have fleas. This winter took everyone by surprise, especially the students who drove to school. Since I was such a pro at digging, I found my- self up to my tail helping them out of the parking lot. Y... To my amazement, the gym was filled with shouts of spirit and joy when Teres Barrettsmith and Mark Lof- fredo were announced queen and king. That evening we attended the girls' football game and watched the Seniors defeat the Juniors . The bonfire and rock dance finished the night's activities. Saturday morning I hurried to town to watch the parade. This year it was at 9:30 be- cause of the afternoon game. I saw a lot of smiles throughout the crowd and participants despite the weather. At the game, the cheerleaders and pompon girls helped to keep the spirit going. The excitement grew when Teres announced the Junior float and jewel's window to be the winners . The game turned out victori- ous over Wauconda, proving that our dog is better than theirs . 4 J 4 ' F, X fr ,y V. J? -Af, ' 1-'I' f I sn 3 ' W H p' I A.. 'warm' , V .J . A xmg 3. Xu S Vicki jaranson plays her first role on the Grant stage as Lt. Rooney Vicki appeared in Irene as a dancer last year, but this IS the first time that she held a speaking part. FALL PLAY g Arsenic and Old Lace was really ex- citing. I got involved in odd jobs around the stage. But those odd jobs turned out to be hilarious work with an insane cast. The crazy cast kept themselves busy with woopy cushions and teeter boards at very short evening practices . The cast would not have known what to do without the understudies. When it came time for dress rehears- al, the cast really looked sharp with warpaint and mud on for their make-up. And the dead people did a fantastic job acting. Tim Semmerling and Doug Solheim play two criminals who are trying to find a place to stash a dead body. They decide to put it in the Brewster home owned by Abbie QChris Uphoffj and Martha fVicki Hillj Brew ster. From a oung, Irish girl to an old lad , Chris Uphoff Zhelowj stars in her last Fall Pllay. This also the last time she will every play on the Grant stage . Scott Redding also acts in his last Fall Play as a clergyman. FALL PLA Y STUDENT GOVERNMENT DA Y I kept myself busy on Student Government Day cleaning up a beach and some lots , painting flower pots , and fixing up the little memorial at the train station. We worked hard under the su- pervision of MAYOR Loffredo. The highlight of the day was the trial. Mrs. Prendergast was arrested for possession of drugs, but the case was thrown out due to the lack of a search warrant. Mr. Anderson was found guilty of assault and resisting arrest. Meanwhile, sneaky Mr. Thompson got shot try- ing to escape from jail. Under questioning from the defense attorney, Bill Seamon was smiling from ear to ear. I won- der why! STUDE TGOVER ME TDAY DONKE Y BASKETBALL When I walked into the gym this spring I got quite a shock. The seniors and the teach- ers were playing bas- ketball while riding on donkeys! It was quite funny when I think of how stubborn the don- keys were. I felt sor- ry for them, but at I least dogs weren't used. Cheri and the other players are enjoying them- selves, although it looks pretty exhausting to get those creatures to move the right way. Looks as if joe has some problems to take care of Second Placeg Tim Kern and Pam Bertram If I learned anything this year, I learned how to disco. This year, it was a real big thing at school. Many of my friends and I learned to disco in P. E . , but nothing could compare to the crowd we had on the night of Friday Night Fever . There were more people there than at any dance before and everyone danced, even the guys . I was so hot on my toes and was dancing so great that even john Travolta would have envied me. I sure hope that Grant will have more Disco dances in the future. FRIDA Y NIGHT FEVER POM PONS Pom Pon girls. The name itself reminds me of short red skirts and high kickers. When I tried to be a part of them I got more than I could handle. They started out doing G.C .I-I.S. and for grew through the year as they did their various routines. Their hat and cane skit really impressed me and I knew that Chris and Vicki worked hard to get the squad in order. I never appreciated how much color they added to the band, assemblies , and games until the end of the year when they turned in their uniforms. I don't know if anyone realizes how hard it is to think up those routines, or how often the girls practice. I looked ' in Mr. Baron's room, then S Mrs. Decker's, and then I Mr. Smith's to find the source of this sound. As I left Mr. Smith's room, I headed for the two brown doors at the end of the hall. When I opened the first door, the sound be- gan to grow in volume. I knew then that I was get- ting close. And to my sur- prise, as I opened the second door, there in a large room stood a mass of vocal musicians, the A Cappella Choir. Mrs. VanSlochteren greeted me and invited me in to listen. D This year I was on the Bark staff . I was told there were many changes. The first semester was all on a voluntary basis. Then, when second semester came, the Journalism II class took over. In the Lake County area the school papers joined together and formed L.C.S.P.A. fLake County Student Press Assoc.J The purpose of L.C.S.P.A. is to improve all the papers in the area. i 1 6 1 w 1 l joined G.A.A. because I Wanted some extra exercise, and I soon discovered that we had a lot of fun there. Besides staying in the gym once a week, we went rollerskating, iceskating, swimming, and bowling. We also Went on a picnic, al though the weather Wasn't too good. Along with the good memories, some of us will also remember getting egged, getting our feet flushed, and earning pennies . A. G.A.A. - FRONT ROW: A. Schemmel, L. Loffredo, V. jaranson. ROW 2: S. Our regular 4c meetings were usually not too thrilling, but sometimes we had special activities to take care of. We arranged the Homecoming Dance and the Christmas Formal. For Valentine's Day we helped the students show their friendship by selling flowers . We also raised money for Muscular Dystrophy. All in all, it was a busy year . Young, K. Bowen, D. Schwartz, ROW 3: J. Wilcox, Mr. Bar- TN When I joined G-Club, I knew that I was in for a lot of selling. But when I heard that the money earned is donated to the athletic department for furnishing any needed equipment, I felt it went for a good cause. Besides working at concessions throughout the foot- ball, basketball, and wrestling seasons, we have also sold many Grant Bulldog hats , scarves , and mittens. Near the end of the school year, the G-Club sponsored a hilarious crowd- gathering donkey basketball game. I was going to try to pass as a donkey but they wouldn't let me in. They said I was too short. I had fun watching it anyway. iA Magauran . A. G-CLUB OFFICERS - LEFT TO RIGHT: N. Manusos, L. Najdowski, T. Scott, 1. Parsetich, B. G-CLUB - FRONT ROW: I.. Najdowski, L. But did you ever picture a bulldog on ice skates? I have never ice skated before but when I went with the Commercial Club to see the ice skaters, they Imade it look so easy that I just have to try. Boy, am I glad I joined the Commercial Club. Thanks to them I'm going to try to ice skate. Wish me luck! Once I heard that Grant had a pep club, I knew that that was a great way to show my spirit. After I joined, I found myself making posters before games to hang on the walls . When it comes to drawing bulldogs, I'm one of the best. I went to all of the home games fwearing my Pep Club t-shirtj to cheer for our Bulldogs . They were worth cheering for. It sure is fun being in Pep Club. A WARD DRUM SOLO . . . OBOE SOLO . . A whole year has passed for me, but four years have passed for all the sen- iors . Even though we were all nervous , graduation turned out to be funny with all the pranks that were pulled. Some of our caps didn't fit right and we had to wear pins . I still couldn't get mine to go over my ears, I had to resort to us- ing my paws . I don't know if I will see any of the seniors again but I hope they know that I wish them the best and that I will never forget the year I spent with them. Halfway through the season, the newspapers changed their tune when they saw us capturing victories , instead of being at the bottom of the pile. We slipslided our way through rain, mud, and cold to a championship tie with Warren and Stevenson. I'm really proud of our Varsity team. They deserve a great deal of credit and congratulations for their outstanding efforts. The Sophomore team showed amazing talent as they were faced with injuries to several starters. With great- effort they ended the season with the second place title. The Freshmen showed support and unity ending the season with the third place title. I think the outlook for the future Varsity team is a promising one. . I saw a lot of both team and school spirit hereg the students loved to come and cheer my fellow Bulldogs on. We lost a fair number of games , but the team never gave up. The team finished the season with a 7-16 overall re- cord and 7-9 in Conference for fourth place. The Sophomores had a great season, and finished with an undefeat- ed Conference record of 16-0 and 21-2 overall. Four of the players were moved up to the Varsity team, but the Sophomore team was so loaded with talent that they were hardly missed. A lot of credit has to be given to their coach, Mr. Kazlausky. The Freshmen proved themselves capable of carrying on the win- ning Bulldog tradition too. A few of their games were pretty close, but with the help of Mr. Einhorn they pulled through. They finished one game out of first place with a 12-4 Conference record and they were 15-7 overall. , F,, , 1 , w 57 - U xx A- lr' 'C VARSITY SCHEDULE Grant Grant Grant Grant Grant Grant Grant Grant Conference 7 9 Overall, 7 PHOMORE RECORD Conference 16 O, Overall 21 2 ESI-IMAN RECORD Conference 12 4, Overall 15 7 LCONFERENCEJ Mlller T Stanton l I Q VARSITY WRESTLING- ROW 1: R. I couldn't take all the workouts and practicing that the rest of these boys did. After the first day my hind legs and paws were aching so much l just could not go on. Although I quit the team, I went to many matches and saw that they really didn't need me. They won by themselves. The most exciting meet of the year, in my opinion, was the Antioch meet held at Grant. Talk about loud barking! I have always enjoyed the beauty of gymnastics so l was G V a S t I c quite pleased to hear that our graceful gymnasts would be competing for a place in conference. This is the first year the girls have been in competition , and it was nice to see so many girls get interested in this sport. All the girls did an outstanding T job, and next year I hope that many more girls decide to go out for it. If nothing else they might y even learn to be graceful. The staff was so confident that this year they wouldn't miss any deadlines, but as the due dates got closer there were a couple of close calls . I was a little upset when I got one of my paws slammed in a crop- per. They let me help sell ads and I am proud to say I really worked my tail off! I gorged myself with taffy ap- ples, but it was against my principles to touch the hot dogs . There was al- ways a lot of laughing and talking. But as you can see the yearbook did come out and you may even find a couple of pictures of me adding life to the rest of the folks at Grant. YEARBOOK STAFF: FRONT ROW: I.. Harris, E. Burns, C. Not only did you say simply what we struggled to find the right words for, but you saw everything and Went everywhere to gather stories and, of course, photographs for the 1978 l Trumpeter The Year in Pictures . l We on the yearbook staff hope that you had as much fun as we did putting the book together, and we hope that the students from the classes of '78 through '81 enjoy looking through the book and remembering the '77-'78 school year.
