191 OLTO GR 'ANT 1919 IN MEMORIUVI LEU M PHIPPS Sunday exenlng May 4 1919 s the shades of 111 ht we1e set tl1ng down ove1 us thls communlty was shocked to learn that I eo M PhlppS had suddenly passed away at h1S home He was to the manner born He came of that stu1dy p1o11 1 stock that marked the d1v1d1ng l1ne between pretentlous arlstoc llCy and common med1ocr1ty Born March 19 1860 and wh1le yet a mer ch1ld h1s parents moved on a farm 1n Nodaway Countv M1ssou11 where he grew to manhood Llke other country boys he had only such advantages to obta1n an educat1on as was afforded at that date 1n the publ1c schools but h1S parents 1nculcated 1nto the m1nd of the1r son a deslre fo1 an educatlon and sent h1m to the b st publ1c and 1JI'1V3t6 schools at that t1me Before he was elghteen he entered Avalon College 1n L1V1l1gSt0I1 County at that t1me on of the leadlllg educatlonal lnstltutlons ln North Mlssourl from whlch he graduated Wlth honor and soon after entered the K1FkSV1ll9 Normal School graduatlng therefrom at the end of four years In 1896 he was employed as prlnclpal of th Grant C1ty Hlgh School he contlnued as the pr1nc1pal of th1s school for four years W1thout speak1ng dlsparmgly of any of the other most excellent teachers who have fllled that pos1t1on It can truthfully be sa1d that none gave greater sat1sfact1on none were more devoted to the1r work and the publ1c schools were never more eff1c1ent tha11 durlng the t1me Leo M PhlppS was the pr111c1pal of th sol ool Although he loved the publ1c schools he was 3mb1t1OUS to ente1 the law professlon In 1891 he was admltted to the Bar and 1n 1892 was elected to the 0ff1C9 of Prosecutm Attorney of Worth County re elected ln 1894 1896 f1ll1n0 the Off1C6 for sn: yea1s wlth honor and credlt to hlmself and h1S prof SSIOH As a lawyer Mr PIIIIJPS soon took a posltlon 1n the front rank w1th h1s brothe1 lawyers he was always regarded as a man of sterllng worth and ummp achable hono1 Yet not Wlth standlng the fact that he was devot1ng h1s splendld ablllty to the practlce of law was a de voted frlend and supporter of the publ1c schools of Grant C1ty and because of hls speclal fltness and of h1s love of th schools he was a member of the School Board for more than a quarter of a century Although Mr Phlpps has gone from ou1 mldst and no mo1e w1ll we have hls w1se counsel and adv1ce 1n the schools yet h1S splendld lnfluence w1ll not dle but contmue to l1ve on and on through the years to come 9 ' - '- 11' . .
