Even though its been for a short period of time, I feel very fortunate to have traveled part way with you. As you continue down the road, you will experience valleys, peaks, detours, and deadends. But you will grow and learn from each experience. Maybe someday our roads will meet again. Good luck to the Class of 1980 4 I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow or creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. 7 Build bridges instead of walls and you will have a friend. A ship in a harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. The next few games proved disastrous as we lost three close ones. The Tigers then marched into Tolt to beat the Demons 18-12. The Tigers were then over- whelmed by the two favored teams in our league, Langley and King’s Garden. Granite got back on the winning track by rolling over Concrete 25- 0. Their ad- visor was Mr. Sykes, High School Princi- pal. His comment about the girls is, “Through rain or shine they were always there. It was easy being their advisor be- cause they were all cheerleaders with previous experience, and I was the only rookie.” 31 Captains-Laurie Kohl and Terri Sykes Lea ving Seniors GRANITE FALLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM FINISHES 5TH IN STATE This years varsity volleyball team was the first Granite girls team to qualify for a position in “STATE” competition. The Tiger team was led by Seniors Caro- lyn Coward, Tracy Impson, Tana Tuttle, and co-captains Laurie Kohn, and Terri Sykes. Also on the team were Juniors Sandy Hjelle, Terri Quillen, and Melody Wyles. Sophomores on the team were Mary Cartwright, and the Freshmen Toni Macomber, Dori Murry and Jean- ette Woolman. These girls believes in themselves—they attended camps and prior to the start of the season they set for themselves the goal of “going to state”. Qualifying for state was not easy. It took a lot of hard work coupled with a posi- tive attitude on the part of the players in volved. The varsity team ended its regular sea- son with a record of 15-3. Following the District and State tournaments, the Ti- gers concluded their season at 21-6. Throughout the season, the girls gave their best effort. We should be proud of them. After all, finishing 5th in state is really GREAT! Determined to prove oth- erwise, however, the Tennis team proved them- selves to be a tough, talented group with the abili- ties that it takes to win the league championship, undefeated, for the second year in a row. One of the main reasons for their success came from their num- ber 1 singles, sophomore, Terri Allen, and number 2 singles. Senior, Carolyn Rochon, as they had not lost one match during the season. The team is fortunate to have an abundance of underclassmen gaining valuable varsity experience. Coach Steve Merkley has done a fine job with the Tennis this year and is very much appreciated. Coaches: Steve Merkley Jim Lien. The Varsity program was given a new start with a new head coach, Steve Merkley, and new ideas. Starting the season, the Tigers were not the tallest team in the league, hut proved to be scrappy! This allowed them to make many league contenders sweat all the way to the final buzzer. Consisting of only three Seniors, the team was primarily made up of Sophomores and Juniors. This lack of experience reflected the year. It was more of a building than a contend- ing year, with the Sophomores and Juniors receiving much playing time, giving them the essential tools needed to be a contender in the future. 42 Varsity: Daryn Latham, Steve Duncan, David Briggs, Brad Coleman, Mike Tilton, Lee Desrosier, Dave Bunkelman, Steve Maw, Poncho Woolman, Rick Hjelle, Dan Hill, Wayne Perrigoue. At presstime, the Granite Falls J.V. team was having a fine season. Their record stood at 8-3 with 8 games remaining to be played. This represents one of the finest seasons ever for a J.V. squad at Granite. Success can be measured this season by the teams willing- ness to do the following: 1.) Get in shape 2. ) Play defense 3. ) Work hard together as a team. Team members were: Rick Hill, Eric Edlund, Will Short, Shawn Wyles, Jim Stilley, Jeff Quillen, Lee Desrosier, and Tom Kussy. Also contributing a major role were part time varsity play- ers. They were: Dave Briggs, Poncho Woolman, Steve Dun- can, Wayne Perrigoue, Brad Coleman, and Steve Maw. Captains: Daryn Latham Mike Tilton. 44 The boys and girls basketball teams for 1979-1980 were cheered on by Sandy Hjelle, Tama Gildroy, Terry Stilley, and Diane Roberts. These girls were elected last year and attended a cheer clinic during the summer to learn new cheers and dance routines. They anticipated an exciting sea- son and hoped all the Tiger fans would help them support our basketball teams. 46 L to R. The girls Varsity Basketball Team got off to a good start winning their first nine games plus victories over Lake Stevens and Monroe. The race for the league title will be between Granite and three other teams. Granite is led by Seniors Terri Sykes, Tana Tuttle, and Sue Briggs. Other key personnel are Sue Goss, Laurie Kohle, Tara Olson, Rene Miller, Kelly Burrus, and Terri Allen. CO CAPTAINS. 48 JUNIOR VARSITY The J.V. team has done a tremendous job this year. Through much hard work and desire they have improved their record from last year. Overall, everyone has played an important part of the team and made-a-valuable con- tribution to building up the squad. I am proud of their efforts and really enjoy coaching them as a team. Middle School. Many of the changes were visible: a working water fountain, newly painted walls, properly func- tioning toilets, and new window shades. Several of the changes were adjust- ments in the climate of the Middle School. Discipline became the prime target of the Middle School with a full-time administrator placed in the building. In the area of discipline concept known as the Conflict Com- mittee was introduced. Eighth grad students served on the Conflict Committee to listen to disci- pline problems. The Conflict Com- mittee members then assigned ap- propriate disciplinary action. This committee proved to be a benefit to both the students in conflict as well as the students who worked on the committee. Another new program in the Middle School was the Gold Pass Incentive Program. This program identified twenty top students every six weeks as outstanding in their achievement and behavior. In all 1979-1980 was a great year. The year was marked by school dis- cipline, increased student activities, and a feeling of autonomy not felt in recent years. We are extremely proud of the Granite Falls Middle School! ✓ ■8th Grade Basketball Blaine Burgess John Horn Daryl Vanliew Brian O’Neill Gary Braaten Brian Head Sean Linbeck Jeff Noble coach JIM FOSS The 8th grade team started off well; however, near the end of the season they lost 3 games. This gave them 5 win and 3 lost season record. They did very well for being the smallest team in the league, and surprised a lot of people! The winning season was a result of team play and not individual effort. They were a bunch of good players with the desire to win. ■7th Grade Basketball Roger Harding Earl Cambell Nick Taklo Dan O’Neill Dave Kathens Henry Spruiell Wayne Schmidt Don Skelton Bryce Ohm Phil Tribuzio Keith Kyle Greg Franz This team came out and won the cham- pionship with a 7 win and 1 loss record.
