While they followed the football team to various points on the earth, they may not have helped win much, but at least they provided some money for the rooters' bus. They accomplished a lot in the '76 - '77 year, although it doesn't show in the bank account. The Sophomores also provided some good basketball players this year, and in the future they will prove this to the fans and other teams. The Tigers started off the season by methodically rolling over Snohomish JV 28-6. The most exciting game of the season was played against Sultan, which was the first league game for each team. Granite was trailing by 8 points with very little time left when Rob Sain hit John West with a TD pass to close within two points. Sain then threw to Mark Lewis to send the game into overtime. Sultan scored on a field goal by Storgaard to lead 24-21. Then on the fourth down with five yards to go, Sain passed again to West in the end zone to win 27-24. Granite kept up its winning ways by beating LaConner 43-20, Darrington 20-6, Langley 36-16, Tolt 42-13, Lakeside 23-12. The Tigers then went on to play Castle Rock in the State A regionals at Mariner High School. Granite was scuttled by mistakes and key penalties, and the Rockets won 40-6. All Conference players selected in the Cascade League from Granite on offense were running back John West and guard Ken Hahn. On defense, Dan Sansaver and Kevin Engstrom as linebackers, and John West as defensive back. Second team selections on offense were Kevin Engstrom as fullback, Mike Desrosier as tackle, and David Blythe as center. On defense, Ken Rochon as middle guard, Randy Derum as defensive tackle, and Mark Lewis as corner back. The Varsity Basketball team had their first winning season in 11 years during the 1976-1977 season. In light of a new coach and a new system the team did quite well. The team members adjusted quickly to the newness and picked up the Tiger winning spirit. Granite's strength lied in balanced team scoring and intense defensive play. Although the season had its inconsistancies the players showed determined effort all year. The winning record gives great promise for the future of Tiger basketball. Junior Roger Tilton was the team's alternate. Taxing their brains and wit to the utmost, the Hi-Q team did its best to represent our school in competition. Jeff Hendricks HI-CPII MUSIC Great things have been coming from the music department this year, and it has all been under the direction of the new music teacher, Mr. Dan Fosberg. The holiday season was rung in by the Christmas Concert, which was held on December 9. The Concert was highlighted by a flute duet by Edie Engebretsen and Lynn Redman, and the German Club Singers performed a few numbers. The Junior High Band and Chorus joined together on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and each did a few songs as a group. The High School Band played their own rendition of Love Will Keep Us Together, along with some traditional Christmas carols. The Concert was concluded by the High School Chorus, ending with an audience sing-a-long. The music department deserves a vote of appreciation for their hard work throughout the year. VIEW INN Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner 7 Days a Week Mt. Loop Hwy 691-6668 87 ERE TEAR IN WCRDS This school year began with a fresh new start. With a new Principal and many new teachers, students of Granite High School faced many changes. The fall season was very exciting as our mighty Tiger football team fought hard to be the undefeated champions of the Cascade A League. Homecoming highlighted the football season, with such activities during the week as dress-up contests with a prize awarded daily for the best dressed boy and girl; and a float competition won by the Junior class. The week's activities were climaxed with a victorious football game over the Langley Flacons, followed by a formal homecoming dance. The girls were busy participating in the Autumn sports of Tennis and Volleyball. Winter brought the beginning of the Basketball season. Both girls' and boys' teams sported new coaches this year; Mr. Doering coaching the girls, and Mr. Flaherty spurring the tough Tiger guys into the playoffs. Tolo was put on by a combined effort of the cheerleaders and Letterettes this year. The Tolo theme this year was “Space''. With the advent of Spring came Baseball and Track. A girls' Softball team was introduced into the sport's roster this year. The boys' Baseball team was under the direction of Athletic Head, Mr. John Flaherty. The end of the year was celebrated in high fashion at the Jr. Sr. Prom, held at the Everett Yacht Club. The theme of the Prom was “Calypso , and it was a great way to culminate the year's activities. The class of 1977 technically finished High School on May 25, 1977 and officially graduated on June 1, 1977. 1976-1977 was truly a school year to remember. a
