The Pilchuck staff wishes to thank the Hanna Barbera Productions, Inc. for letting us use the Flintstones as the theme for the 1962-63 Pilchuck. Presented to the Associated Student Body of Granite Falls High School by the 1962-63 Pilchuck staff. 1 The 1962-63 Pilchuck staff wishes to dedicate the annual to Mr. Grinnell. Although he has only been here for three years his help and advice will never be forgotten. Not only has he participated in school functions but he is also an outstanding member of our com- munity. For these fine contributions Mr. Grinnell, we thank you. Mr. Grinnell Mr. Grinnell always looks ahead for our school, never behind. 2 3 The School Board meets again. Seated left to right: Mr. Grinnell, Mr. Stehr, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Swanson, Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Motter, and Mr. Craggs. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Miss Schemella stars 4 Is it legal? Behind the Scenes! Hello Superintendent's Message The senior class has inspired many accomplishments in student action during the year. They have provided leadership and shown responsibility in their accomplishments. Since school is a train- ing ground in both the academic and activity areas of life, this years seniors can look forward to a great deal of success as they go into the communities of our state and nation. The search for more education should be your uppermost con- cern for the next few years. Further education through college or trade school will prepare you to meet the economic, social and political problems that will confront you and our nation in the future. Education will turn what appears to be a harsh and impersonal world into a world in which you can arise to heights of success you didn't think possible. Success in America is filled with hard work backed up with knowledge. The opportunities are greater than Principal’s Message Eons ago powerfully, huge dinosaurs roamed the earth unchal- lenged for centuries. They were the masters of a world in which survival depended upon brute force. But almost imperceptibly, the world began to change although the dinosaurs remained the same. They did not recognize the fact that as the world evolved, survival depended more upon knowledge than upon strength. Final ly, unable to cope with their environment, the monsters vanished from the earth. Let each of us look to this lesson from history as the decades pass us by. Let us continue to pursue knowledge so that we may not become extinct in our own civilizations. Congratulations to all the seniors upon their graduation from Granite Falls High School. Secretary Mrs. Motter has done more than her share this year, and we wish to thank her for her many services. inistration MR. HARRY AYERS Physical Education Social Studies MR. Granite’s 62-63 freshmen helped lead the student body through a profitable football and basketball season with their enthusiasm and their contribution of Cathy Horn as a songleader. As their Girls' Club representative, Lyla Krieg has inspired many to participate in school activites and to earn points toward their Girls' Club letter. Assist- ing in the business of the student government were De De Middleton and Lynn Moen. Johnny and Danny Maik have put the freshmen name up in lights by being on the varsity basketball team. Two of the more brilliant freshmen, Marydee Graham and Sharon Hjelle reached a four point average. The freshmen sponsored a sock hop, sold at the Skykomish, Lydon Christian and Friday Harbor games and raffled off a blanket to earn money for their class. Continuing the tradition of years before, initiation was a highlight of each freshman's year. Freshman Class H. Anderson T. Bergan D. Bergstrom D. Biering S. Bromley S. Burnett B. Campbell F. In the homecoming court were Senior Princess, Joannie Ashe; Junior Princess, Carolyn Swanson; Sophomore Princess, Edeen Stehr; Freshman Princess, Cathy Horn. The homecoming week was filled with events for Sheila and her court. A dinner was given for the royalty and their escorts at the Pilchuck Inn in Granite Falls. On Oct- ober 26, 1962, the royalty appeared in the pep rally par- ade. During the half time of the Granite vs. Coupeville football game the girls were crowned and given a corsage of white carnations. Queen Sheila received a bouquet of long-stemmed red roses. At the homecoming dance, ’’Deep Purple”, Sheila led the Royal Waltz; followed by her court. After the dance they dined at Chin!s Cafe in Everett. This climaxed the most unforgettable week of the year for these girls. Princesses: Edeen Stehr, Joannie Ashe, Queen Sheila Fox, Princesses: Carolyn Swanson, Cathy Horn. 38 The pep rally hangs Coupeville in effigy. Pep Rally The homecoming pep rally was a huge success. The fire truck cleared the streets so the parade could go through. Led by the Queen and her court, the band played our favorite school songs and the drill team performed. Majorette, Connie Mackie twirled at the bonfire. Cheerleader Vicki Dickson pepped the rooters up so well that they could be heard all over town. After the burning of the dummy, the crowd headed back to the school to watch the game against Coupeville. u 40 Gil Winje Johnny Maik Kenny Maik Ron Chew Darrell Luke First Five 41 Varsity Squad Left to right: Coach, Harry Ayres, John Maik, Harold Gray, Dan Maik, Darrell Luke, Ron Chew, Len Reef, Steve Burnett, Ken Maik, Gil Winje, Tom Bergan, Coach, Mel Kelln.
