SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The year 1968, ten years after I graduated from Granite Falls High School. I returned to my old home town to visit friends and relatives. I found, to my utter amazement, that the town had grown by some 10,000 people. The population has a staggering 10,600. I stepped from my light blue $200,000 car and walked into a nearby hotel only to learn that it and 500 others just like it are owned and managed by an old classmate Eldon Berg. One day, five years ago, he had been digging ditches in his back yard and had struck oil. As I walked around the lobby of the hotel, I discovered a new machine I had never seen before. It was Vivacious Vicki's Vodka Vending machine. I heard Miss Carpenter is making millions of dollars on this business venture. Upon reading the newspaper, I was surprised to see that the gossip column editor is my old friend, Bill McGee. His motto is If I can't find a scandal. I'll make one. I found that Larry Scherrer is also employed as the advice to the lovelorn editor. Upon reading further I saw that Mike Leckvold had been elected Mayor of Granite Falls. It is said that he got into office by stuffing the ballot box. As I walked back to the hotel, I met Gus Schwendtke, the famous scientist. He has been working on a new space rocket that will go on forever. He told me that Bob Ottoway, an agriculture expert, had just dis- covered a way to make blue grass grow in swamps. I also found out that Sharon Benoit had married that new singing rage, Ronald Perrigoue. Ron became famous by adding a new twist to the Rock 'n' Roll dance. As Gus and I walked down the street, I noticed a big bill board advertising Dearing-oil. I was surprised for I didn't know that our classmate, Bill Dearinger has purchased the Mobilgas Corporations and has changed the name to Dearing-oil. Being hungry I stopped at a hamburger stand for one of Horn's Homemade, Highgrade, High-priced Ham- burgers. They are the best kind, you know. Ed Horn is a world renowned hamburger chef and is raking in $50,000 a year from the teenagers in Granite and the neighboring metropolis, Robe. I was surprised to hear from Ed that Miss Edith Tupper and Mrs. Delores Porter have gone into the cosmetics business together. Although they were well known for their many other things, their specialties are eyebrow pencils and hair bleaches, you know, for that eye catching, bleached-out look. When I turned to leave Ed's establishment, I met Frank Bear. He told me that he has invented a couple of new gadgets for the Chrysler Corporation. They are the clutch peddle and the floor gearshift. By turning back to the local newspaper, I learned that Marion McLeod is really getting around. She is the town's leading party doll. If she isn't attending a party somewhere it is because she is at home having one of her own. Upon driving into the country I came to Darlene Morgan's 500 acre horse ranch just east of Granite. She is raising race horses and is a Bookie on the side. Her Bookie activities are very profitable. Darlene told me that Grace Macomber and Charles Spromberg have been married for five years. Charles is the town Mortician. His slogan is The Deader the Better. Darlene also told me that Bill Davisson just can't stay married. He has had eight wives in the past ten years. His occupation is marriage counselor for Granite and vicinity. That night as I looked out of my window on the thirtieth floor of the hotel I saw the sign S. C. B. Space Conquerers, Incorporated. This was something that I thought should be investigated, so I dashed down to the building that was supporting the vast sign. It was owned by Dean Steinke, Charles Curtis, and Charles Barton, three scientific geniuses of the class of '58, who have gotten rich from the money they have taken in for fares on a super space rocket they will launch in '78. In my newspaper, I saw an advertisement which said, Shirley's Shiny Chartreuse Shoe Laces. Phone PICKLES 1-7082. I called to see if this could be my old classmate Shirley Burrus. I found out that I was right. Shirley has been running this business for four years. She says Chartreuse shoe laces are the latest thing now. Everyone has them, (that is, all the Cats in town do). They go well with Walter Scherrer's invention. Pink Suede Shoes - better known as Pink Bucks. Walt is now a school teacher at Granite High School. He had to turn to teaching when his latest record, Last Hate Affair, flopped, he didn't sell one record. I then returned to my room for I had to be up at three to attend one of Marion's out-of-state parties in Palm Beach, Florida. 14
