Now that you think about it, I ' m a big part of your life, right? Sure. In fact, I ' m responsible for much of your maturity. Take, for instance, that high school prom when you and your date saw each other in somewhat more than old blue jeans and tattered sweatshirts. I ' ll bet you never thought that there was so much adult in a student. This one event could be the omen of good things to come in the future; of a new era dawning in your life. Or look at yourself when the basketball team is in the final seconds of a heart-stopper. Come on now, you know that your heart feels great with a victory, and even cries a little with those unmentionable losses. And what about a school play? Boy, it is really a kick in the head to see your best friend kissing a girl on stage. Yes, and even the classes begin to grow on you if you give them a chance, with all of your friends, and the jokes, and the teachers, and the . . . homework? But time changes every thing. Even me. The sun rises and sets each day, counting off the steps to infinity, and we find ourselves walking with her; walking until we awaken suddenly to find that we have come to the end of the past and the beginning of the future; to the crossroads of change. And as we meet these crossroads, we go with them and take the changes dealt to us. The sun sets to take the old while she rises to bring to us a new hope. So, as you carry on functions and activities within and around me, remember that the end of the year brings to you a change; a crossroad; another step to illuminate new horizons for you. And as you leave me alone to echo my thoughts only to myself and, perchance, any passing squirrel or bird, I know what you will say. You will say to yourself that I am a memory that you keep alive inside of a tiny room in the corner of your heart . . . that I am a soft, pleasing color which helps you to paint that certain rainbow you wish to find . . . that I am a star which has given you a gift as big as your greatest wishes— as you leapt into the sky to touch new heights, I reached down to hold you up. Yes, I know what you will say. You will say that I am the book that gave you the knowledge to read the world . . . you will say that I am a teacher. A teacher of heart, mind, soul, and body . . . you will say that I am an old movie that takes you back to the grand days of your youth ...
