Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1977 volume:

entertaining upon my stage . . . at work in my classes . . . 4 and at play in competitive Now that you think about it, I ' m a big part of your life, right? Sure. In fact, I ' m responsible for much of your maturity. Take, for instance, that high school prom when you and your date saw each other in somewhat more than old blue jeans and tattered sweatshirts. I ' ll bet you never thought that there was so much adult in a student. This one event could be the omen of good things to come in the future; of a new era dawning in your life. Or look at yourself when the basketball team is in the final seconds of a heart-stopper. Come on now, you know that your heart feels great with a victory, and even cries a little with those unmentionable losses. And what about a school play? Boy, it is really a kick in the head to see your best friend kissing a girl on stage. Yes, and even the classes begin to grow on you if you give them a chance, with all of your friends, and the jokes, and the teachers, and the . . . homework? But time changes every thing. Even me. The sun rises and sets each day, counting off the steps to infinity, and we find ourselves walking with her; walking until we awaken suddenly to find that we have come to the end of the past and the beginning of the future; to the crossroads of change. And as we meet these crossroads, we go with them and take the changes dealt to us. The sun sets to take the old while she rises to bring to us a new hope. So, as you carry on functions and activities within and around me, remember that the end of the year brings to you a change; a crossroad; another step to illuminate new horizons for you. And as you leave me alone to echo my thoughts only to myself and, perchance, any passing squirrel or bird, I know what you will say. You will say to yourself that I am a memory that you keep alive inside of a tiny room in the corner of your heart . . . that I am a soft, pleasing color which helps you to paint that certain rainbow you wish to find . . . that I am a star which has given you a gift as big as your greatest wishes— as you leapt into the sky to touch new heights, I reached down to hold you up. Yes, I know what you will say. You will say that I am the book that gave you the knowledge to read the world . . . you will say that I am a teacher. A teacher of heart, mind, soul, and body . . . you will say that I am an old movie that takes you back to the grand days of your youth ... you will say that I a men and women . . . that J am jk Jhatyou .41 within you . - ss ... that I T. I am hope Here we meet again; in this auditorium, on my stage. These boards have seen many a shoe sole track across them. Band and chorus concerts, pep rallies, plays, assemblies, elections, pageants- I ' ve brought all of these to you, for your entertainment, right here. On the very first day of each school year everyone comes in here to find out where to go. And all of the teachers are in- troduced to you, so you can remember the name of who is yelling at you at the time. The night life of the auditorium isn ' t too bad either. All of the pretty girls parading onstage is enough to bring a fellow out of deep depression. Who knows, the comedies might squeeze a laugh out of you at one time or another, too. Yes, this auditorium has been a good place for us, hasn ' t it? It ' s been a good place to learn as well. Learning. That ' s really what it ' s all about. 11 FACULTY 12 I 1951 through 1956 | 12a-1945-Mr. Richard Starnes-Assistant 12b-1946-Mr. Max S. Each girl, representing her re- spective club, was judged in both evening gown and short dress competition. They also displayed talents in the field of music by singing a song. Linda Triplett was judged the winner, with Sonya Childers and Sandra Jordan taking second and third place respec- tively. The pageant was sponsored by the Women ' s Service League. 18a-The Queen and her court are honored by the audience. 18b— Linda tal es the victory walk. 18 Carrousel Princess Sonya Childers The Carrousel Pageant was open to any senior girl who wished to enter, which made for some fierce competition among the girls and headaches for the judges. Contestants were judged in street wear and gown competition. Sonya Childers was crowned queen, with Cindy Johnson and Sandra Jordan being named runners-up. Sonya went on to Charlotte to compete in the state Carrousel Pageant and rode in the parade. Those of you with devoted, trained eyes saw her on television. 19a— In the pageant, Cindy Johnson was named 1st runner-up, (19b—), Sandra Jordan was voted 2nd runner-up, and (19c—) Sonya Childers was se- lected Carrousel Princess. 19 Professor Who? All-Am(!ri(;;in -the story of an immij raiil professor who comes to tcdcfi (mginef. ' rinjj at an obscure college, full of pr(jblems because of a losing football team. Being the genius that he is, Professor Fodorski devises a great mc ' thod of applying engineering to football: thus the winningest team in the nation and a student body that is finally interested in classes. Of course there are problems, such as his falling in love wiih the dean, his best pupil becoming a football meathead, and his loss of values; but, have no fear: he comes through in the end! Fur left: Ttie professor is amazed by his first football game, to say the least, tx ' ft: This is a bus? Far lower left: Moose will never learn (but Hulk keeps trying). Lower left: Susan is thrilled that Elizabeth has found her man. Lower center: A little fake hair here, old age lines there, some grey hair spray, and, presto! a Fodorski! Lower center: Oh, the agonies one must suffer for glamour on stage. Below: What is a musical, if there is no music? Ah, do(!sn ' t it feci just wonderful to wake; up bright and early on those school days, looking for- ward to your classes? You can almost reach out and touch the knowledge that you will find each day. Your heart feels it, deep down, and you can sense advancement and betterment of s(!lf in the air. P el- ings of hope find their way inside you, and . . . What ' s that? You don ' t think it ' s quite that ex- citing? Perhaps, you are right. Classes do not rank in the top ten on the ratings chart of thrills, but they ' re not all bad. Who knows— maybe, if you try very hard and listen and stay awake and curtail a few neighborly conversations, you may just learn some- thing. And it isn ' t really painful or repulsive to learn. The fantastic mu- sic was supplied by Mainstream. The people ob- viously enjoyed it by their participation on the dance floor. I enjoy watching a good contest now and then. You young athletes give it to me. Scrapping to the very end you give your best, often doing the unexpected. There ' s something to it, this spirit that you have. What a feel- mg It is to have people so fiercely loyal to their teammates, to their coaches, and-to me. Why not devote loyalty to me, the one so loyal to you all? Loyalty instills a desire, a will to win. I am thrilled at the sight of someone striving for something. If a person wishes to attain a goal, be it something as simple as getting signals straight or as complex as the most intricate of timing skills, he will reach it. And he will reach it only if he gives his best. You give your best. Yo u show your loyalty. I am left proud. Demon gridders .P break even I ' ve seen some good football teams in my time, and this year ' s team was one of them. Their 5-5 record didn ' t reflect their true play. Bad breaks tilted games that were weighing in the balance over to their opponents. Some of their victories were quite impres- sive, like the gridder ' s victory over the strong Maiden team, and the fantastic comeback effort against St. Stephens. And speaking of good teams, I remember some oldies, but good- ies. Like the 1956 team. They ac- tually won the state champion- ship. The year before was no cream puff either. Their offense was so strong that they went the whole season without punting the ball. Since 1954, the Demon teams have tallied 135 victories, three undefeated teams, and a seven year streak with no home game losses. Yes sir, some really good ones have come out of Granite. Much more. They ' re a very competitive group. They have participated in two Christmas parades, in Salisbury and Le- noir, they have taken a third place prize at Western Carolina, and gone to Wil- mington for the Azalea Festival. The band received an inspection award, also, showing the pride that they take in themselves. They gave a Christmas concert performance in the auditorium on December 16. Band members, as a rule, work hard. I rather much appreciate their attitude and ambition. 92a-The 1977 GFHS Band does much more than play at football games. 93b-The band gives their performance at the Western Carolina University Marching Band Festival. 93c— Officers in the band this year are Presi- dent—Carolyn Moretz, Vice-President— Jo Ann Brady, and Secretary-Treasurer- Cathy Stallings, 93d-Outstanding band members are: Jeff Haas and Cathy Stallings-marching bandsmen; Terri Birtwistle-flag; Cheryl Murphy-rifle; and (not pictured) Cindy Johnson— majorette. 94e-The majorettes, leaders of band spirit, are: Deborah Lunsford, Barbara Cline, Cindy Johnson, Beverly Goble, and Lori Huffman. 94f-The group holds an active role during the Homecoming festivities. 94g-The majorettes make great sacrifices, es- pecially in cold weather. 94h— Band spirits obviously remain high. 94i— Good form is shown by the band al West- ern Carolina University. 94 1977 Homecoming Queen Miss Allan . , i 1 Yesterday. A nice day to remember. A day that we all look back upon with the fondest of memories. A day that seems to lengthen into yesterdays, and then into yesteryears. Time passes us by so very quickly that we must honor these memories, before they are lost to us forever. As so we did. On the day of Homecoming, the regular, exciting festivities of the day were celebrated with fervor, but with all an added bonus. Twas our last Homecoming, and we did it right. The parade after school held its ex- pected excitement, with each class float and many, many other entries filing through the town; but the most fasci- nating and memory-filled part of the day arrived with game-time and half-time. The ball game developed into quite a thriller for the jam-packed Granite stands. The Demons destroyed the opposition West Lincoln team with a 34-zip scoring avalanche. The half-time show brought with it a recognition of each of the classes of pre- vious years, and a super show of all the former Home- coming queens. And, lest I forget, this year ' s queen was another beauty to add to that list-Pam Allan. The junior float was judged by the teachers to be the most appro- priate for the occasion. After the game, the action drifted to the Rec. Center for the dance, featuring the music of Next of Kin. Yes, it was quite a day to remember. Well, not exactly so ... It was quite a yesterday to remember. 96 .) ..- Mk. snn.or n;pn,.s,.nt.tiv,..s „, i|„. Homecoming Court ...0 Sony. One thing they did not lack, though, was depth. Free substitution, with quality running high throughout the lineup, kept the team fresh and highly competitive. The team had its standouts, also, with the likes of Don Kirkpatrick and Joe Davis as scoring streaks and Mike Bryant co. as de- fensive deterrents. They had a rough and tedious sea- son, our men of the diamond. The year could have been drastically different with some breaks in their favor, such as six one-run losses that took their toll upon the team ' s morale. Lacking a po- tent offense, the Demons were often at a loss for the run production they so desperately needed. With some adversity, there were still the stars to shine brightly. Greg Thomas was outstanding in all-round play, leading the team in hitting, pitch- ing ERA, and caught when he did not pitch. Perhaps, with a better start, the ' 77 team will bring home a winner. Let ' s hope so. 116 I f ■ - IIIM -John Coffey, third base, uses his glove as well as his bat to benefit the team. -Coach Deal lends some of his abundant knowledge to a promising player. -Rarely is there a ball hit to centerfield that Mike Sims doesn ' t catch. -Greg Thomas uses his strong arm to fan many of the op- posing batters. -The 1976 Demon diamondmen are, left to right: Mike Swanson, John Coffey, Don Kirkpatick, Mike Parham, Steve Simmons, Mark Thomas, Bryon Mackie; second row: Rick Curtis, Gary Kirby, Dan Hardee, Greg Thomas, Mike Sims, Reggie Bumgarner, Rick Jones, and Marty Wilson. -Alert and speedy baserunning many times will advance a runner unexpectedly. -On the other end of all those infield throws is Marty Wilson, first baseman. -FLASHBACK-Baseball is a tradition at Granite Falls and the early teams were good ones. -There aren ' t many things that will stop a Demon from scoring. 117 118a-The 1976 Demon netmen are left to right: Stuart Cox, Paul Shumaker, Joe Davis, Ben White, Don Kirkpatrick, Dwayne Simmons, Toby Set- tlemyre, and Ronnie Brittain. 118b— Don Kirkpatrick returns a topspin shot at his opponent. 118c— Ronnie Brittain exhibits picturesque form in this backhand shot. 118d— Dwayne Simmons prepares to unlease all available energy to return this shot. 118 121a-Cuddles uses every ounce of muscle to put the shot. 121b-Larry Gilbert whizzes over hurdles smoothly. 121c-The passing of the baton is extremely important in a relay. 121d-Iames McCormick ' s skill at the triple jump attained him many first place finishes. 121e-Members of the track team are Mike Carswell, Tony McCormick, Terry Icenhour, Kenny Cline, Syd Cox, Allen Starnes, Larry Gilbert, Dennis White, Sonny Moorei Edmund Poovey, Ben Julian, Randy Carswell, James McCormick, and Alan Hill. 120 A11-SD7 121,1- jijc D.ivis, Mike Hiyiinl, .ind IJ(jn- il(l Kirkpiitrick wt.Tu HclctAt-tl lo represent the Blue Di ' iiions on the A11-SI)7 fo(jthiill team, |(,e .111(1 Doriiild alscj iriaiii! I am an exchange stu- dent from Bolivia, South America. This year I came to Hve in Granite Falls from where my American parents are. They are: Mr. Mrs. Ted W. Teague. Also, I have an American sister and brother. I like very much I am living, because people are very friendly. My very best friends are: Rex Kiziah, Bryon Mackie, Rick Curtis and Ron Ben- field. They have helped me very much in class when I did not understand. All the professors at school are very nice with me and had helped in what they could. I like the food but my favorite is meat. I like all the sports and when I am not practicing I like to watch. From all the sports the one I like best is football. Soccer is the favorite in my country. One of the things that I like are: Girls, movies and television in that order. When I finish to study here this year in July I will go back to Bolivia and then I will have to study four more months, because in Bolivia classes will start in March and finish in Novem- ber. Then I also will graduate in my city. After I finish my studies at school I am planning to become an engineer. 122a— Fernando finds that his patience runs thin when using his calculator. 122b— Fernando ' s homeland is Bolivia, where he lives with his father, mother, brother, and sisters. 123c— Physics class brings out the clown in two prime pupils. 123d— Disagreements are settled peacefully among friends. 123e— Rex and Nano explain to each other words not found in the dictionary. 123f— During his stay at Granite, Nano resides at the Teague residence. 122 Well, it ' s over, this era of friendship as we now know it. We continue, though. We continue, because of our basic motivations— to live, to love, and to seek the new and exciting. So go on to your life remaining, for there is much for you to see and experience. But as you go, I ask only one thing. Remember. Remember the times we had, the fun we made, the tears we shed. Remember us ... remember our times ... remember . . . me ... and my story. The production of the 1977 Boulder was not accomplished without some difficulties.
