fk 967 GRANITE BOULDER VOLUME XX GRANITE FALLS HIGH SCHOOL Granite Falls, North Carolina Edited By Susan Moss FOREWORD Turning points in our lives; taking a test walk in education; smoothing away those immature, childish signs; learning to say so much before writing a word; having a right to dignity whether freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior; being as subtle and sophisticated as only restless stu- dents can be at ball games, dances, and banquets—these changes sparkle in our personalities as we come to the end of another school year— an impressive year in which changes have been made for the better. This now is the moment that belongs to each of us and so we begin with these thoughts— To thee, old Granite High School Thy praises we ' ll ever sing! We ' ll hold thy ..standards Throughout life And keep thy honor clean. Silence is Golden. 5 DEDICATION As the years quickly draw a close to our careers at Granite High, we remember the cho- sen few who have guided and directed our edu- cation. We can never forget two people who have stressed excellence in academics and a challenge to think and question. Nor can we forget the dignity and purpose that these two have brought to their classes. From our great appreciation for their sincere efforts to impart a greater knowledge to their students, we, the BOULDER staff, dedicate the 1967 BOULDER to— MR. AND MRS. JOHN E. KEEVER 1 Mr. Bill Metcalf Principal We feel we are lucky to have such a forceful leader as Mr. Bill Metcalf. Every phase of school activity receives his attention. He is more than just the principal, for he treats us as a special friend. Students are able to confide their problems and ambitions to him. He is one who is always interested and concerned with each student. rji ii !? i vi fe- ' ; !!.; ? ;. ' ; ., ' ■■. .--.v. i ' n ' i;v ' ,ii ffiSi? Guidance Counselor--M. S. With the loss of a large number of varsity players this year, the Junior Varsity should help ease the loss on this year ' s squad. FIRST ROW: Lynette Townsend, Barbara Harmon, Becky Bolick, Rhetta Spencer, Martha Winkler. SECOND ROW: Kay Wike, Susan Price, Trula Huskey, Alice Sherrill, Sharon Simmons, Carol Corpening, Becky Sullivan. THIRD ROW: Coach Deal, Brenda Eckard, Debbie Wakefield, Jarenda Cozart, Nancy White. This year ' s girls basketball team came into the season ready for a few wins. With a number of girls returning from last year ' s team and quite a few good prospects coming up, theDemonettes look very promising. Al- though last season ' s team was winless, it provided quite a bit of helpful experience for many of the girls. The students here at G. F. H. S. want to wish this year ' s team the best of luck. 1 Basketball players or cheerleaders? It ' s a bird, it ' s a plane, its Coach Deal gives the girls his viewpoint during a time-out. As time marches on. FIRST ROW: Larry Hayes, Dennis Munday, Jim Benfield, Greg Teague, Warren Walden, Donald Lynn Kirkpatrick. SECOND ROW: David Walden, Jackie Clarke, Dennis Richards, Marty Curtis. THIRD ROW- Jeffrey Triplette Steve Bumgarner, Butch Estes, Lynn Smith. ' BOYS ' BASKETBALL Wayne Kirby 6! Captains--Jim Benfield and Greg Teague The 1966-67 edition of the Blue Demons will carry many new faces on the squad. With only three lettermen returning from last sea- son, this year ' s success will depend a great deal on the success of the new members to adapt to varsity c ompetition. With game ex- perience, the Demon team should prove to be an exciting team. In the land of the Jolly Green Giant! Everyone looks on hopefully. Who ' s the wise guy that put the gum on the ball! ! FIRST ROW: Keith Estes, Benny Kirby, Keith Starnes, Donald Reid, Mike Pearson, James Moore, Dale Bright, Terry Reep. SECOND ROW: David Annas, Danny Whitener, Terry McRary, Gene Munday, Steve Teague, Ricky Noggle, Reid Cline. BOYS ' AND GIRLS ' J.V. BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: Debbie Setzer, Deborah Gorsic, Diane Stilwell, Rebecca Knight, Mitzie Dula. SECOND ROW: Debbie Starnes, Sheila Reid, Sue Reid, Melinda McDonald, Becky Winkler, Angie Cooke, Vickie Teague, Patricia Wilson, Laura Looper. i 1 TRACK TEAM Open House in the Locker Room I The 1966 track team finally began to show dividends for the many hours spent by its members. The season was the most successful one yet for the relatively young track pro- gram here at Granite High. The squad showed its real colors at the Conference meet held at Morganton. The Demons set school highs both in points scored and final standing in the meet. Although the Blue Demons lost several key men through graduation, this year ' s team should continue to show a marked improvement. SEATED: Ronnie Duffey, Walter Hodges, Reggie Propst, MiJke Rhea, Michael Ward, James Helton. STANDING: GregTeague, Terry Williams, John Corpening, Tommy Duffey, Ken- neth Hamby, Coach Kirkpatrick, David Bumgarner, Clarence White. Greg displays his running ability for the Granite Track Team. I ft 1966 BASEBALL TEAM FIRS T ROW: Steve Whitener, Dennis Richards, Danny Hall, Marty Curtis, Wayne Church, Lynn Smith, Will Burwell, Steve Davis. SECOND ROW: Coach Deal, Mike Simmons, Jim Benfield, Ricky Church, Steve Short, Floyd Lail, Greg Travis. Even though the 1966 baseball team had only a break-even record, the team featured plenty of hustle and spirit from its ballplayers. The 1966 squad, comprised mainly of lower classmen and this year ' s team, looks to be a contender for conference laurels. With an experienced pitching staff and some of the seasoned hitters returning, -the Demons should improve on last season ' s record considerably. The Blue Demons ' batting department is led by Dennis Munday, Jackie Clarke, and Jim Benfield. The pitching is in the capable hands of Lynn Smith and Marty Curtis. The long stretch at first. Zap! Bop! Pow! 1966 GOLF TEAM Although g olf is a relatively new sport at Granite Falls High School, it had a very suc- cessful 1966 season. With the able assistance of Coach James Bolick, an even better season is anticipated for 1967.
