The Students of Granite Falls High School Granite Falls, North Carolina present ' ' Moments to Remember ' as interpreted by The 1966 Boulder Staff Edited by Pamela Propst Volume Number XIX Foreword Granite High changes every year as the never-ending tide of students come and go; each class leaves its own distinguishing mark upon our Alma Mater ' s growing and maturing spirit. Now we have reached the end of another change. That greatest game, that special dance- -they are all in the past, and now only the future beckons. For some, the future holds other special years at Granite; for others, high schooldays now are simply memories to treasure. To them, and to each student, the staff of the 1966 BOULDER offers our window through which a wonderful year may be viewed once more. We hope that you, after turning again to your BOULDER, may fondly recall that intrinsic part of your life spent at our Alma Mater. Table of Contents and the present disappears, Is it really worth it? Oh well, I guess they know what they ' re doing. we will have these ' ' Moments to Remember ' PRINCIPAL Bill C. Metcalf Of all the many purposes the BOULDER will serve this year it should remind us that life is a vast bundle of associations and rela- tionships. One of the primary relationships that develops through the school years is that of the student and the principal. Although this is the first year Mr. Metcalf has served as principal of G. F. H. S., a close relationship has been established between him and the students. Because of his deep under- standing of the students of our school and his willingness to render any service possible to help them, the students of G. F. H. S. have grown to like and respect him as an adminis- trator. Mrs. Maxine Hajduk Secretary Math— Functional English— Essential Our Faculty Jerry Beam Bricklaying James Bolick A. S, T. C. Whose skillful presentation of knowledge gave us both the facts involved and their meaning in today ' s world, and Whose unanswering devotion and high principle in the field of education have served as both an inspiration and an endearing factor to us who have benefited by his example. GRANITE vs DREXEL Granite opened its football season with a bang by defeating the Drexel Wolverines 13-0. After a scoreless first quarter Granite broke the ice in the second period and put its first six points of the new season on the scoreboard, sparked by the play of Mike Mackie and Mike Simmons. The Blue Demons began to click in the fourth quarter, and they scored once again. The Demon ' s were led defensively by Munday, Childers, and Smith. GRANITE vs BUNKER HILL Granite traveled to Bunker Hill to begin its defense of the Southern District 7 Conference crown and came away from its first conference game with a surprisingly easy 39-6 victory. The Blue Demons were in command all the way and were never headed after their first score. Everyone on the Demon squad got into the picture, and the result was quite satisfying. GRANITE vs ROCK SPRINGS The Rock Springs Warriors invaded the Demons homefield seeking a victory but left witha stinging 38-Odefeat on their hands. The victory was high-lighted by the offensive play of Munday and Mackie and the defensive play of Childers and Smith. The Demons showed improved all- around play and hustle. GRANITE vs HILDEBRAN The game which everyone was wait- ing for finally came to reality as the De- mons faced the Royals. The first half was scoreless as the Demons made several gallant goal-line stands without allowing the Royals to score. Granite was unable to move on offense until the second half. Then the Demons fired their way to a touchdown in the third quarter and follow- ed up with another TD in the fourth quar- ter to put the game on ice. Granite ' s defense was tremendous, as they time after time stopped the Royals in the De- mons well-earned, 12-0, victory. GRANITE vs GAMEWELL The action of this game was definitely mar- red, by the rain-soaked field of the Gamewell Blue Devils. The adverse weather conditions led to some rather sluggish going as the Demons rack- ed out a 26-0 win. The Demons defense once again blazed through, as they completely bottled up the Blue Devils. The shutout was the fourth of the sea- son for the Blue Demons. GRANITE vs FRED T. FOARD Granite put its undefeated record up against the Foard Tigers, and the Tigers came very close to putting it into their tank, as they lost by only one point, 13-12. The first half was a defensive battle in which Granite scored but once, on a run by Mun- day. The Tigers came roaring back with an inter- ception which went all the way for a last minute TD, before the half. The second half began dis- mally for the Demons as Foard scored first but failed for the second time in their PAT attempt. The Granite team received the ball and with real fight and hustle scored the TD on a run by Mackie. The crucial extra point was bulled over by Mun- day, as the Demons edged out the win. GRANITE vs BANDYS The Blue Demons found going a bit rough as they played on the homefield on the vastly improv- ed Trojans and came away with a 7-7 tie. The Demons were the first to score on a run by Mackie and were successful in their PAT attempt. The Trojans scored their TD late in the first half and also made their important extra point. The action in the second half was fast and sometimes quite furious, as both teams went all out for the win. The Demons started a drive late in the fourth quar- ter but were stopped on the Trojan 20 yard line with an interception. GRANITE vs WEST LINCOLN The large Homecoming crowd was treated to a powerful offensive display by the Blue Demons as they routed the Rebels 48-6. The Demons scor- ed at will on the battered Rebels and left with a 28-6 lead at intermission. Coach Kirkpatrick let his reserves play almost the entire second half with very pleasing results. GRANITE vs ST. STEPHENS The Indians of Coach Tommy Sim- mons attacked the Demons ' fort and came very close to pulling off quite a massacre. The Indians jumped on the Demons and scored two quick touchdowns while play- ing a tenacious defense and the dazed Demons left at the half trailing 14-7. But the Demons showed their true spirit as they entered the second half. From the first play the Demons fired, they began to click, and scored and scored and scored. Led by Mike Simmons, the Demons won a great comeback by 34-14. GRANITE vs MAIDEN The game that was to decide the con- ference championship came with the Mai- den Blue Devils. The Demons were com- pletely bottled up by a ferocious Maiden defense and failed to move the ball for any sustained drive. While the Devils ' de- fense kept Granite shutout, the offense ran wild and rolled up a grand total of 40 points. The Demons, outweighed and at a distinct disadvantage in their lack of speed, were defeated 40-0. Although the odds were against them, the Demons play- ed on pride and heart, as they had so often through the season, and left the field with a season record of 8-1-1.
