196J m J ISO Published By The Students of GRANITE FALLS HIGH SCHOOL Granite Falls, North Carolina m 1 FOREWORD Human life is a book. Either opened or closed, it is filled with many things. The chapters are exciting and interesting — each day, a page. The yellowed ones are memories and the pages to be inserted are dramatic with challenge. 1965 — a year which is the beginning chapter in the GREEN YEARS and yet for many of us, the ending chapter in our lives at Granite Falls High, Perhaps these, the first chapters in our lives, are the best. History can record only the highlights of the years. We, the staff of the GRANITE BOULDER, present to you a chapter from the GREEN YEARS. DEDICA TION For your never tiring efforts and guidance in the classroom. For your competence and experience in advising the BOULDER staff. For your congenial and youthful characteristics. We, the BOULDER staff, dedicate the 1965 GRANITE BOULDER to you-- Mrs. Robert Martin 6 ADMINISTRA TION Our principal, Grady E. Stewart, graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College and re- ceived his Master ' s Degree from Appalachian State Teachers College. Captain Lee Sherrill Granite vs. Hudson Granite opened their season against their bitter rival, Hudson. The game was full of first game mistakes on the part of both teams. Hudson took the lead at half time, 6 to 0. As the second half started, Hudson scored again and led 12-0 as the fourth quarter began. Mike Mackie scored as Granite fought back, but was killed by the clock. Granite vs. Bunker Hill In the first conference game of the year Granite flexed their muscles as they romped past Bunker Hill 26-6. Granite, playing on their newly grassed field and with their new scoreboard lit up, gave evidence of being best in the conference. All- Conference full- back, Jim Benfield, also showed his ability by scoring three touchdowns. 71 Granite met little competition as they traveled to Rock Springs and downed the Warriors 30- 14. The Warriors never knew what hit them as the Demons were sparked by the playir of Benfield Brady, and Mackie. Granite vs. Gamewell Gamewell traveled to Granite with a vision of victory before their eyes but left with their vision blurred by stars. The Demons plastered them 52- 14. Everyone on the team got into the act. The results were pleasing to a proud coach. Granite vs. Hildebran The game that everyone was waiting for came as the two con- ference powers Granite and Hil- debran met at Granite on Septem- ber 5 . The undef eatea nildebran team naa not been scored upon yet. The Demon team, having tasted defeat, worked hard to pre- pare for the Royals. The Demons lived up to their expectations be- fore even the first half had ended, stunning the Royals 14-0. In the second half the Royals fought back and tied the score 20-20 with 58 seconds left on thp clock. The Demons took the kickoff and drove 60 yards to score and win the game ! Granite vs. Bandys The Trojans of Bandys traveled to Granite with little hope of a victory and left with their dreams beir fulfilled. Granite beat them 27-0 for their sixth consecutive victory. The scoring was again led by Benfield. The Mackie to Sherrill passing combination also began to click. The Granite defense held their opponents scoreless. Granite vs. Fred T. Foard Granite found stiff competition as they traveled to Foard and squeaked past them 12-0. The De- mon record stood at 5-0 in confer- ence play and it looked as if they were headed for another champion- ship. Charlie Brady and Larry Hass sparkled on defense to hold back the Tigers after the offense broke the scoring ice. Granite vs. W. Lincolnton The Demons, who were rolling up victory after victory, did not let W. Lincolnton stand in their way as they mopped them up 39-0, Again all erf Coach Kirkpatrick ' s boys got in the game, with some of the rookies making good showings. Granite vs. St. Stephens Granite ' s old rival, St. Stephens, hoping to knock off the champs, played host to the Demons. St. Stephens had a good ball club, but it was not good enough to even come close to Granite as they streaked past them 33-0. Mackie started it all, throwing to Sherrill for a touchdown. The Indians were never inthe game, as All-State fullback Benfield ran right through them and Mackie flooded the air with passes. Granite vs. Maiden Granite traveled to Maiden for their final regular game of the season. Maiden, like Hildebran had been, was undefeated. Of course the Demons took care of that and showed the Maiden team who was boss as they beat them 20- 13 in a tough game. Coach Kirkpatrick, Coach Kirby, and the Blue Demons were Southern District 7 champions for the second straight year. I I I Hey Greg, I didn ' t know you knew KARATE.
