Starnes has been the axis of Granite Falls High School around which the life of the pupils and teachers revolves. Every morning there is a mad scramble in his office with students obtaining excuses signed by him and teachers collecting their records. During the day Mr. Starnes is busy advising the pupils and carrying on the routine work of the school. His character and strength work their way to the hearts of the students of Granite Falls High. The football player and sponsor then choose an escort for the sponsor. During the Homecoming Parade, these sponsors and escorts ride in decorated cars. At the half time of the Homecoming game the sponsors and escorts are presented. 51 t I A time for each student to participate in the fun which a school provides is presented to us in the form of activities. Naturally, there are other things included in activities other than the fun it provides ... a contri- bution by everyone for the benefit of the club and its projects ... a feeling of belonging ... a last feeling of contentment knowing that the time spent by everyone in preparing these activities was well worth-while. ANNUAL STAFF Behold a resume of a year ' s hard work . . . littered desks, photos to be taken, captions to be written, ideas to be pondered. So it went. While Judith headed the editorial staff, the business staff looked for ads, allowing Frankie and Tony to acquire that Midas touch, and causing Mrs. Martin to assume that drawn look. We hope you can look back over the annual and recall 1961, which has affected our lives deeply . . . the faces and places you see . . . and things you didn ' t want to be forgotten, and this Boulder, the reflection of G. The trials and tribulations of publishing a newspaper can be truly known to only those students who live with the Granite Pebble. The continuous cycle of getting assign- ments, seeking the news, composing articles to convey this news, making up the paper, and finally seeing the finished product is well-known to the staff. What to do when stories do not come in, when copy runs short, when pictures fail to print- -all these situations have been competently han- dled by Betty in her efforts to get the job accomplished. Through its efforts, it has brought about an awareness of the prob- lems which come about as the result of alcohol in the lives of young people and adults. By joining the Allied Youth, the young people in this organization have shown their interest in a desire to solve the problem. They have proved that fun and happiness can come from sources other than through the effects of strong drink. Through the joint efforts of the Allied Youth members, we sincerely hope that this organization has been and will be an important factor in the betterment of our school. LIBRARY CLUB One of the many duties of the library assist- ants is to keep the library clean and attractive for the benefit of others. During the latter part of September, 1960, we organiz- ed Granite Falls High School ' s first library club. Our main project for the year was a week set aside to try to increase each student ' s appreciation of the library. Dur- ing Library Appreciation Week , many posters were made encouraging students to use the facilities which our library offers. Mrs. Walker and her assistants are al- ways on hand to help with the selection of books. Library Appreciation Week not only helped students appreciate the library more, but also, to understand it better. President Rebecca Wright Vice-President Judith Brown Secretary Pat Warlick Treasurer Susie Davis Reporter Brenda Crisp 62 The office staff of Granite Falls High School is composed of junior and senior girls. They are very efficient in doing general office work and other duties that must be performed for the facultyand the principal. Thispractice is veryhelpful to the girls in theirfuture as business- women. The office staff is very much appreciated by everyone at G.F.H.S, One of the many necessary reports coming from the office is typed by Donna Fox. 63 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Granite Falls Chapter of Future Farmers of America has their largest enrollment this year. Chapter Officers are as follows: Michael is learning to operate the saw in the shop. President Jerry Burns Vice-President David Weaver Secretary Spencer Poovey Treasurer Folger Teague Advisor W. H. Corpening Two thirds of the year consists of studying local and state problems in agriculture. One third is devoted to studying woodworking in shop work. Shop work is handi- capped some by classes being too large for best results, also suitable lumber is expensive. 64 Vernon Yount, Jerry Burns, Kenny McRary, Clyde Keller, Marvin Williams, Gary Williams. BUS DRIVERS The many students who ride the bus to school each day owe a great deal to the group of boys who serve as bus drivers. This job takes careful driving, quick thinking, and much patience. The bus drivers know well their responsibility, and their job is well done. As a bus driver for G.F.H.S., Kenny must always look at the road ahead of him. The thrills and sorrows of winning or losing a game is demonstrated by the enthu- siastic students at the athletic competitions between Granite Falls High and their rivals. Although everyone prefers winning to losing, we know that it takes a far better person to accept defeat with a display of good sports- manship than it does a winner. May we, the student body, as well as the players, re- member this as we enter into competitive sports. Bottom: Karen Beane, Willa Parham, Judie Wilson, Teena Wilson. Top: Patsy Wike, Vicki Yount, Donna Dula. CHEERLEADERS Rah ... Rah ... Rah! Rah! Rah! What ' s a school without school spirit ? And where would our school spirit be without our cheerleaders. Chosen by their classmates, they are well qualified to lead the cheers which give our teams the confidence they need to win. With Willa Deane Parham leading the pack as head cheerleader, they give us plenty of support for our teams on the field and the court. COACHES COACH DEAL We are very proud to have as our athletic director and girls ' basketball coach, Mr. Sinclair Deal.
