DAVIS Mr. B.J. Davis was born on March 23, 1931 He attended Southwest Missouri State and recieved a B.S. in education in 1952. After teaching Social Studies and Driver ' s Education from 1955-1958, he recieved his masters in Education Administration. He then served as an Elementary Principal at Mexico, Missouri. In 1960 he became a principal at a Junior High School in Granite City. He was appointed Assistant to the Superintendent in 1965, and in 1966 he became Superintendent of School District 9. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FRANK KRAUS Mr. Frank Kraus was born in Granite City. He graduated from Granite City High School in 1948. He served in the Air Force from 1951-1953, and then became a faculty member and coach at Lawrenceville, Illinois, followed by a period as a teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal at Coolidge Junior High School here in Granite City. He recieved a B.S. degree in 1957 from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and his M.S., from Indiana State University, In 1967 he became the Assistant Superintendent for Community Unit District 9. 19 MR. GILBERT V. WALMSLEY PRINCIPAL OF GRANITE CITY NORTH HIGH HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO NORTH AND HER STUDENTS: As you are aware, this is our 10th Anniversary and our memories are many. As I reflect upon the 10 years that have passed, my mind is filled with happy memories of accomplishments by you and your fellow students. I am pleased that the student body filling our corridors today is of the same high caliber as your predecessors. Those who came first can be proud of what they helped you build and I am sure you take great pride in continuing old traditions while building new ones for those who will follow. Congratulations to this student body — you are among the finest. Mr. Walmsley 21 ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Victor Buehler B.S., M.S., Illinois State University. Mr. Buehler is primarily responsible for the orientation and registration of students. He supervises the collection of grade reports and is in charge of distribution of report cards. He is in charge of evaluation and supervision of counselors, the nurse, and special education classes. Mr. Buehler develops and supervises such programs as graduation. Senior Recognition Day, and senior meetings. He is also in charge of the administration of the summer school program. David Painter B.S., Eastern Illinois University, M.S., Southern Illinois University. Mr. Painter deals directly with students, handling attendance and disciplinary problems. He assists in making teacher observations and with student activities. Eastern Illinois Ed Mercer Monitor NORTH DEPARTMENT HEADS Mrs Haddox at the helnv 1983-THREE MASTER TEACHERS RETIRE Evelyn Laux, Librarian Several veteran teachers are retiring from teaching this year, and they will be sorely missed by their colleagues and the student body at North Indeed, their contr ibution has been unique, and they are irreplacable All we can do is to wish them well In their retirement Miss Laux has taught a total of 23 years. 13 at Prather, and 10 at North. She opened both school libraries, and has worked at the Missouri State Library, St. Louis Public Library, Social Services Library, and the University of Illinois Library She attended the University of Missouri taking a degree in Journalism and did her library work at the University of Illinois She says whe will miss North very much, and Miss Laux, we at North will miss the librarian par excellence very much, also. Robert B. Cowan Mr. Cowan taught a total of 14 years. 10 at North and 4 at South. Before he became a teacher, he was in the Air Force for 25 years, reaching the rank of Major. He spent time in Europe. Africa. Japan, China, Korea, and was in England during W orld War II. He attended the University of Illinois. Southern Illinois University, and the University of Oklahoma He holds a Master ' s degree in History, and has been Social Studies Department Head for the past ten years He plans to spend his retirement playing golf and fishing Mr. Richard King Mr King has taught a total of 20 years. 19 in Granite City, and one year in Alton. Before he became a teacher, he was an actor with roles in such plays as Romanoff and Juliet, with Peter Ustinoff. and A Mighty Man is He He was in Robert Montgomery Presents, and The Doctors on TV He attended Northwestern University. NORTH CLOSES As this books goes to press, after months of agonizing, we have received word of the official decision by the Board of Education to close North High School at the end of this year, as a cost cutting measure. It hasn ' t exactly been Camelot at North. We ' ve had leaking roofs, flooded floors, falling ceilings, cracked walls, a parking lot which was often a lake, and chronic problems with the heating and air conditioning systems, but those are physical problems. We ' ve had Spirit and Pride at North, and we ' ve had Excellence. Above all, we ' ve had a fine educational environment at our school. Students and staff have gotten to know, to like and respect each other. The school was small enough for that. We have been loyal and considerate to each other, also. Everyone con- cerned has tried to make being at North some- thing to be proud of. And We Are Proud! Closing North is not simply closing a building; it is closing a fine educational institution. We are fortunate in having a fine principal and staff, as well as a fine student body. Closing North is closing a way of life, — a good one. We at North have won more than our fair share of games, awards, scholarships, friends, — and memories. And we have lost, too. And now we have lost our school. But we will always remember how it was at North, won ' t we? This, then, will be the last issue of the North Ingot yearbook. (A collector ' s item.) The staff and I M f rthTK°L t + h K em S ° Uth When if was Granite Cit V Seni ° r H ' gh School, and this will be my tenth book at North. I had the pleasure of naming North ' s book. The Ingot a title derived from the fact that an ' ?h° l! S JHL CaShnQ ° f Ste f ' and we are the Granite City North Steelers . Our book represents a casting of the North experience of the students and staff for the year 1982-83. y The students and staff, the parents of our students, and I think the community at-large, are proud of the accomplishments of North High School in the decade of its existence. Everyone concerned has wanted to make North a fine school with high standards, not only academically, but in every area in which it operates. Although there have been many obstacles along the way. some of us believe those high aspirations have often been met. I remember the efforts of members of the yearbook staff to design a school seal shortly after North opened, one which would have enduring significance for a school we hoped would exemplify excellence. The centerpiece of their effort was a perpetual flame of learning Nothing more need be said. As our school district, like so many other public institutions, has faced the future pressured by the same fiscal problems they all face in our present economy-those of sharply reduced state and federal funds for support of the schools, as well as reduced local tax funds due to declining business activity, increased unemployment and a reduced population-rumors have been rife that Granite North may be closed and the two high schools merged We can only hope that this move will not be necessary, and that the future of Granite High North will be long and bright. In searching for a theme concept around which to orient this year ' s book, we finally settled on Twenty- five Years of Transition — Twenty-five Years of Change ' because of my quarter century association with the schools of Granite City, years of teaching history and government. Why not remind the reader of the tremendous events of the last twenty-five years which are unprecedant in human history? Twenty-five years is a long time, so how best to do this? We decided to display the headline events of the last quarter century, and to reminisce about many of the changes in customs and traditions since that time. Since I have reached the half century mark myself this year, and can recall the events of the 1930 ' s and of World War II, this was relatively easy to do. We all see everything from a different point of view. Many high school students think that everything of impo rtance began with their birth, but a half century of living gives you enough perspective to see that this is not true. R.L. YEARS OF TRANSITION — YEARS OF CHANGE 1958-1983 In looking bock over the past 25 years, a person can draw certain conclusions, which adm ittedly are subjective at best, and colored by the point of view of the person analyzing the events. Never-the-less, some things seem clear. Seldom, if ever, has our society gone through such significant change in such a short period of time. Our society has been impacted by major cataclysms like war, inflation, or depression before, but most of the nation ' s hallowed institutions and the customs of society have remained essentially intact, though temporarily disrupted. The events of the past twenty-five years, however, have made it seem that we Americans find ourselves on a perpetual roller-coaster, trying desperately to hold on to our individual stability, while major change after major change in political leadership, political programs, economic structure, military involvement, social reform within society, and the impact of events in foreign affairs erratically change our course and direction. The roller-coaster metaphor seems particularly apt, as like those attempting to remain seated on such a device, most ordinary people have seemed helpless not only in controlling the events which affect their everyday lives, but they have dispaired of influencing them, also. Not only have the events been cataclysmic in degree, but they seemingly come with devastating suddenness through modern communications which give us an instantaneous update on major disasters occuring not only in our home town, state, or nation, but also around the world. Admittedly most major news events don ' t seem to affect us personally, as we go about our normal lives, but in the end, if we have knowledge of them, and if the government or society reacts to them, as they do, then they do affect us all. No wonder Americans have an increased fondness for nostalgic artifacts of the past, when things seemed more stable I Two major events of the last quarter century seem to stand out in particular: On October 4, 1957, t he Soviet Union, a nation which most Westerners had dismissed as industrially and scientifically backward, shot Sputnik I, the first earth satellite into outer space, and placed it in orbit around the Earth. Armed with a nuclear warhead, the rocket which launched Sputnik I could strike New York, Chicago, or Detroit, eighteen minutes after launch in Moscow, Suddenly, Americans were forced to re-examine their basic assumptions about not only the Soviet Union, but about modern technology, our personal security, U.S. military prepardness, technological proficiency, the adequacy of our educational institutions, and the assumption of the natural and inevitable American superiority in world leadership, as the world had been ordered very much as we had desired since our overwhelming victory in WW II. We also took another look at the commonplace assumption that Americans were just naturally superior to others when it came to machines and technology. It made us realize just what a small world we inhabit, indeed. 264 American reaction to that event was immediate and profound, and as a matter-of- fact, America is still reacting to that event. Witness President Reagan ' s proposed increase in military spending over the next five years of $1675 Trillion dollars. The Department of Defense says that will be the equivalent of $20,000 for each taxpayer in the U.S., and can be further subdivided so that it will apportion out at $38 million dollars per hour, his budget, the president says, will not only give us military parity with the Soviet Union in both atomic and conventional forces, but will give us the superior power of deterrance, as well. The other event seems more personal, even though most of us didn ' t know the man at all. We just felt that we did. If millions of Americans have identified with the leadership of any man in recent history, that man was John F. Kennedy. He seemed to symbolize, even personify to many of us, the highest and best hopes for the future of the American system — The American Dream. When he was struck aown by the assassin ' s bullet that day in November, 1963. most Americans felt the accute sense of loss that we would have felt if the bullets had struck one of our family. No doubt television broadcasting the scene that day helped to make it so. Television, in itself, has profoundly affected us, too, because nothing can project the immediacy of world events, next to being there, of course, like television. After President Kennedy ' s assassination, nothing seemed certain. Political assassination followed political assassination, administrations changed with great rapidity, the crime rate skyrocketed, violent crime and mass murder became the daily subject matter of newspapers and television. Murderers, even though apprehended and convicted, did not pay with their lives. National and international terrorism to achieve whatever goals the terrorists seek, have held hundreds in thrall. Worst of all, the very glare of publicity seems to encourage many criminals to commission their crimes, in order to bask in the limelight, the effect now becoming partial cause. This is to say nothing about the changes in the role of women in our society, with their impact on the family and the economy, the effect of racial integration bringing the blacks into the mainstream of our society, the effect of various wars in which we have been directly or indirectly involved, multinational corporate operation and international technological development and interdependence, which has caused the loss of domestic and foreign markets in what was the mainstay of the American economy, basic steel and the auto industry, to the Japanese and Germans, — mortal enemys only slightly over a quarter century ago — whose economies we helped to rebuild with the most modern technology available. It says nothing of the space race, of unprecedented inflation, interest rates, reductions in government spending on social programs, with consequent record unemployment and economic dislocation, nor the many other problems our society is heir to. We should be especially concerned with the decline in public services which serve the vast majority of our population. If taxation is the price we pay to have a civilized society, a great many are no longer willing to pay the price. The proposition 13 mentality seems to have spread throughout the land. All this used to be the stuff of adult conversation which most children were not aware of, hence they were not affected by it. But with the advent of modern electronics, the media saturates our existance, daily, making these events as appallingly apparent to the child as to the adult. They are spared nothing, in spite of R rating systems and cable television keys. They, as we, must develop the emotional maturity and the presence of mind to examine the headlining events that are hurled at us, and digest them with a perspective which will allow them to fit into our everyday lives. If adults can look to the future with this kind of mature judgement, we can face the future with more confidence, but it is asking an awful lot of children of school age, who soon will be running this society, themselves.
