WALMSLEY, PRINCIPAL Once again I have been given the privilege of addressing the student body of North High School from the pages of our outstanding yearbook. Here we are approaching Thanksgiving vacation and already this year has brought many successes for North and her students. Such as: conference championship in football and an invitation to the state football tournament. We have presented a delightful Homecoming play and have crowned a new King and Queen. It goes on and on. The moments of happiness, achievement and recognition come one upon the other and fill my thoughts with fond memories of students and events. I remain deeply impressed by the quality of people that make up this student body and faculty. I only wish everyone could know you as I know you. You have gained my deepest respect and admiration. Let’s keep it together for tomorrow. Mr. Walmsley 21 ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Victor Buehler B.S., M.S., Illinois State University. cause: to have fun, to enjoy each other, to work hard on and off the field, to have compassion for each other, and to win football games. I was very proud to have coached this football team because they were very coachable, unselfish individuals, who put the team first, and never let hard work stand in the way of their goals. I thank them for all their accomplishments and for carrying on the winning tradition set before them by previous teams. They lamps. were in state playoffs, were conference champs, and city champs They also showed the future Steeler teams what it takes to win and how to go about winning. I believe that the three captains, Tom Crawford, Carl Luehmann, and Jim Wyrostek, did as fine a job of leading young men as any captain I have had on a Granite City team I would like to thank the team members, and 1 hope the underclassmen and the coaching staff can continue where you left off. We will miss you Seniors. Coach Tom Wvrostek Daren DePew holds the state field goal record with a 54 yard field goal against Wood River in the 1981 season . We have had good years in the past, but I don’t think we can top this year. For the last two years our record is 37-1-2. We have lost one match in two years. This year’s team not only went undefeated at 20-0, but also won the Conference and the District Championships, and defeated Granite City South 39-10. Our outstanding team balance was the key, with 98 lb. Colin Davis, a Junior; 105 lb. Greg Nemeth, a Sophomore; 112 lb. Brent McKenney, a Sophomore; 119 lb. Steve Smith, a Senior; 126 lb. Mark Whitaker, a Freshman; 132 lb. Rod Unger, a Junior; 138 lb. Rick Brown, a Senior; 145 lb. Monte Kessler, a Junior; 155 lb. Scott Corey, a Senior; 167 lb. Bob Patton, a Senior; 185 lb. John Morris, a Junior; and heavywright Dave Owens, a Senior. These young men gave a great effort this year, and the school and their parents should be extremely proud. I am fortunate to be associated with them. Coach Whitaker Coach Whitaker 175 181 GIRLS ' SPORTS 1 53 1 i 1 f v Jl L A 1st. Faculty and Administration Editor John Layer, Photographer Tammy Smith, Photography Editor JANUARY, 1982: RECORD SNOW Don’t forget that January, 1982, was the time of the great snow and of bone chilling temperatures that set a seventy year record, forcing a canceling of many days of school throughout the area. First, we were subjected to sub-zero temperatures which reached -14° below zero, officially, at Lambert St. Louis airport, but which were -16° to -18° below in many outlying areas, not counting wind-chill factors. This brought most machinery to a halt. Then we received 20 inches of snow in one night, on the 30th of January. The snow had been preceded by a heavy rain during the day, turning to sleet towards evening. The snow, accompanied by thunder and lightning, ending during the following day. For the first time, most Granite Cityians knew what it meant to be snow bound.School was canceled for Monday and Tuesday, and less than 200 students made it to school for Wednesday classes, so school was canceled by Superintendent Davis for the remainder of the week. Not much moved in Granite City until we could dig out. If one inch of rain equals seven inches of snow, imagine how it would have been if all the preceding rain and sleet had turned to snow, also! GEORGE NEMETH Mr. George Nemeth, a teacher and coach at North High School, passed away last spring after a series of heart attacks. Mr. Nemeth started teaching at North on August 23rd, 1978. He was the Assistant Wrestling Coach ever since 1973 when the school opened. He was also a driver education teacher. Mr. Nemeth passed away March 17, 1981. He went to the Granite City Schools, graduating in 1959. He was a two time Illinois State wrestling champion, and he also wrestled in college at Iowa State and at East- ern Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and his son, Greg, that wrestles varsity for the Steelers, and a daugh- ter, Lori, that is a past graduate of North. Mr. Nemeth will be sadly missed by all who knew him. IN MEMORIUM MRS. NORMA HAND Mrs. Norma Hand was the school nurse here at North. She started here in 1973 when the school opened, and was a member of the staff until last summer when she was killed by a hit and run driver, who ran her down on a sidewalk while she was on vacation in Florida. She had been the school nurse at Central Junior High until it closed. She was always willing to help any student or teacher that needed it. She was available and considerate. She has a daughter, Judy, and a son, Mike, who is a teacher in O’Fallon. She also has four grandchildren. There is a memorial fund to send a student through nursing school in her name. The new nurse, Mrs. Robbers, was a very dear friend of Mrs. Hand, and therefore is the perfect person to take her place. 272 SI i i.
