Davis Assistant Superintendent Mr Frank Kraus has served as a teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal in Granite City. In 1967, he was named Assistant Super- intendent of Schools. 19 Mr. Gilbert V. Walmsley, Principal Dear Students, We find ourselves at the conclusion of another year at North High School. Warm memories are stirred by the excellent manner in which our student body responded to the vicious acts of vandals who attacked our school. I remember, with a great sense of pride, how quickly the student body rallied to put the school into operation within an hour after we found it had been disrupted. I thank you. Who can forget the Football team of 1980-81, an 8-1 record with our only loss being to the eventual state champion. Or Soccer and Wrestling teams that once again brought honor to us. Speech awards won and perfor- mances that were memorable. Academic accomplishments and scholarships earned, too numerous to recall. Homecoming, Prom night, Spring Carousel, Graduation ... I could go on and on with my special memories that recall the great year we had. However, I hope mentioning a few of my memories has made you recall the many others that I know are special to each of you. I look forward to North ' s future and tomorrow ' s events that will become the memories making up our future years. I remain blessed and privileged to be the Principal of Granite City High School North, and I know that your school, as the years come and go, will mean as much to you as it does to those of us who have known her these many years. Best wishes for a rewarding summer. To those of you who will be back, we happily await your return. To our graduates, remember you are now a part of North ' s foundation, and your strong support will be necessary to insure her future. Sincerely, Mr. Walmsley 21 Victor Buehler. Custodians and Matrons The work of the school custodians often goes unheraled, but the school could not op- erate without their efficient attention. They take care of anything from accumulated ice and snow, to broken glass. Here they try to cope with our leaky ceiling. Leona Grabowski Mary Merz 40 The President of the United States visited in Granite City on the day before the great National election which led to his defeat. This is the first time that Granite City has been honored by a presidential visit, but presidential candidates have made campaign stops here in the past, including William Jennings Bryan at the turn of the cen- tury, and John F. Kennedy in 1960. All were Democrats, pointing to the importance of Madison County and the State of Illinois in a presidential election. With its 26 electorial votes, Illinois can go for either party. It is ironic that at about the time President Carter left to come to Granite City, he had been informed of the results of a privately taken last minute poll, which pre- dicted that he would lose the election. The poll proved to be correct. Illinois and the American people rejected the president, and turned the problems that beset the nation over to Ronald Reagan for the next four years. 41 DEBORAH BARKER General National Honor Society: Social Studies Club: Science Club: Media Club ; Spanish Club: Photo Club. It, for example, includes the gingerbread house shown above, created by Mrs. Collins ' foods class, and the Halloween parade shown be- low. If the children don ' t look like sugar-plum fairies, at least they are some of our wee people, on holiday from North ' s pre-school center. BOO!! Mr. Miss School Spirit Jerry Miller and Kristin Wright Mr. and Miss School Spirit are nominated by the faculty for their perfor- mance in supporting the fall athletics and activities. The fall athletes and Silver Spirit make the final selection. This is an honor Kristin and Jerry will always remember earning when they look back on their years at Granite North. They can be very proud of their accomplishments. Their loss came to the 4A State Champs. The most important aspect of this team was that it was made up of individuals who thought more of the team than their own glory. They made many sacrifices and worked hard on and off of the field to make this year a success. I hope that they showed their fellow teammates and schoolmates what working to- gether can produce. I was very proud of these young men in their football endeavors and would like to thank them and the coaching staff for a job well done. Nevertheless, we do. These boys and girls repre- sent North at swim meets throughout the area, and practice at the downtown YMCA pool. However, because North has no pool, we only swim in district meets. We would like to thank these young people for their efforts on our behalf. FIELD HOCKEY This is the last year for Field Hockey here at North. We had eight returning seniors this year and a good chance of having a good season. We played well but ended the sea- son with a 6-2 record. I enjoyed coaching the girls very much. They worked hard and yet still enjoyed themselves and the sport.
