The INGOT 1980 What is an ingot? It is: 1 . A mass of metal shaped for convenience in storage or transportation. 2. A casting mold for metal. (Middle English, ingot, mass of metal, “Something poured into (the mold)’’; in, i n + Old English gotin, past participle of geotan, to pour, cast in Metal.) This is an ingot as defined in the dictionary. To us at Granite City High School North, the term. Ingot, has a similar meaning. Our yearbook is an Ingot, in the sense that the raw ore of school activities is taken by the yearbook staff and processed so as to make North’s operation intelligible to the reader. Envision, then, a smelting operation, whereby the activities of the ad- ministration, faculty, student body, and other personnel, are analyzed, and finally formed into a convenient shape for reference and future storage. The Ingot is a casting of the educational experience at North, fired by the energies of the young men and women who will soon become the mature steel of our society -steel of the finest temper and quality! The Steelers were paired with Oak Forest in the first game of the State Tournament. Oak Forest ' s was led by pitcher Tony Bartolomucci, an All State pitcher who aver- aged nearly 2 strikeouts per inning and less than 1 earned run per game for the season. Oak Forest took the lead in the 3rd inning when they scored twice, but the Steelers tied the game in the fourth. The Steelers scored twice in the 5th inning to take a 4-3 lead, only to have Oak Forest go ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the 5th. In the 7th inning, the Steelers had the tieing run on base but failed to score In spite of losing, the Steelers ' coaching staff was proud of the way the team competed and of the class the players showed in defeat. 177 178 Agonized effort Leads to Accomplishment! ! This means that they paid all of their expenses through candy sales, bake sales, etc. The girls won dis- tricts at St. Clair Bowl in O ' Fallen by 186 pins. They advanced to the State Tourna- ment in Peoria, Illinois, where they placed ninth. Although this may not sound impres- sive, as a club they had not faced competition through much of the year, and some forty teams that had were at state. Last year the team placed sixth. Mr. Ron Dillard is their coach. 183 Top Row-Kari Sykes, Julie Hay, Nickie Barr, Lori Fyalka, Lisa McKee, Kellee Blockberger, Penny Asher, Miss Ward. There was one returning varsity senior, Lisa McKee, and five returning varsity sophomores and juniors; Kellee Blochberger, Mary Kefalas, Diane Kwiatkowski, Laura Chappell, and Lori Fyalka. Team Captain was Diane Kwiatkowski. Our team was composed mostly of sophomores who demonstrated much character and ability to win. Our con- ference record was 1 win and 7 losses. The win was scored against Cahokia. In Districts held in Woodriver, our 2 doubles teams (Diane Kwiatkowski and Laura Chappell, Lori Fyalka and Shari Easley) and a singles (Mary Kefalas) lost in second round tournament play, while another singles (Lisa McKee) lost in third round play. This year, the girl ' s Field Hockey team contained a lot of talent and spirit. With a lot of hard work they ' ll have the ability to develop into a championship team for 1980. This year, we started practice late. Because of this I feel that we lost games we could have won. The team was just beginning to excel when the season ended. I was very pleased with the improvement of the team. Next year there will be eight seniors and four juniors. With this kind of experience returning, I am looking for- ward to the season and a championship team. Miss Leach 194 Girl’s Field Hockey 79-80 Senior, Ellen Fever Captains Connie Seibirt and B.J. Its members are part of The Marching Band From Steeler Land during the fall, giving special halftime performances at football games and participating in parades. They become the Granite High North Concert Band in the winter season and provide a series of four concerts for the student body and community. During the winter months they become two North Pep Bands which perform at pep rallies and home basketball games and give special performances in the community whenever their presence will benefit some worthwhile community activity. Members must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average, must have performed superior work in some aspect of journalism, and been active on the NORTH STAR newspaper staff and or INGOT yearbook staff. The sponsor this year is Mrs. Shirley Stroud. North Drives! Drive and determination are the hallmark of student activity at North. Nothing is more common in the public mind than the myth of the failure of public education, or of the student who doesn ' t partici- pate or who doesn ' t care. People who believe this kind of nonsense, which often sells newspapers or grabs your attention on the tube, simply have not visited North or attended its activities. They have no eyes to see. Here you have the proof! These students obviously ARE motivated. They know you only get out of life what you put into it. 250 Jf 252 And it isn ' t just those who are involved in athletics who are serious or dedi- cated. Sincereity of purpose can be found in all the vocational and academic pursuits. Plus, there are over 460 curriculum offerings at North, and nearly 70 activities, in which some 500 students are proud to participate,— in many cases before or after the regular classroom hours. We mainstream handicapped stu- dents and operate a pre-school for children. We have an extensive off-campus education program. This is North achievement, so let ' s give our students the recognition they deserve! 253 BUSINESS CO-OP First Row, L to R: Phyllis Harnetiaux, Kathy Pendegrass, Rhonda Rea, Tami Palmer, Jo Ann Neimeyer, Cindy Dortch, Kathy Cuvar. There were a lot of people who really worked hard to provide this year- book for you. I would like to thank Mr. Robert L. Johnson for all of his help and understanding through the year. I hope that you enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.” Alice Childers CREDITS: Pictures, courtesy of staff photographers, Clar- ence Chism and John Layer, and many other people here at North, including Jim Hemphill and Miss Michaeloff. It is: 1 . A mass of metal shaped for convenience in storage or transportation. 2. A casting mold for metal. (Middle English, ingot, mass of metal, Something poured into (the mold)’’; in, i n + Old English gotin, past participle of geotan, to pour, cast in Metal.) This is an ingot as defined in the dictionary. To us at Granite City High School North, the term. Ingot, has a similar meaning. Our yearbook is an Ingot, in the sense that the raw ore of school activities is taken by the yearbook staff and processed so as to make North ' s operation intelligible to the reader. Envision, then, a smelting operation, whereby the activities of the ad- ministration, faculty, student body, and other personnel, are analyzed, and finally formed into a convenient shape for reference and future storage. The Ingot is a casting of the educational experience at North, fired by the energies of the young men and women who will soon become the mature steel of our society — steel of the finest temper and quality!
