Mr Frank Kraus 10 0 ?accc€tty 20 DEAR NORTH: I have been asked by the Yearbook Staff to write a letter to the student body for our 1979 Yearbook. Finding appropriate words is a difficult task, because my mind is full of the many things our student body has accomplished. The bright spots are so many; cross country, golf, and soccer victories over South (before November) and good things to look forward to, such as Homecoming, Spring Carousel, scholarships to win, academic honors to receive, senior recognition, so much for our seniors to contribute and accomplish before the class of 1979 enters the archives of North’s history. Seniors, be assured the teachers and the administrators at North look forward to seeing you in the future so we can SHARE your accomplishments and happiness. Keep in touch, we’ll miss you. I extend to every student best wishes for a successful and happy future. Because we have students of your caliber to fill her corridors, North has been and shall remain- NULLI SECONDUS. G. Says Mickie: I was born on January 9, 1962, and I have come from Hamberg, West Germany as an exchange student from Rotary International. My brother, age fourteen, and my sister, age ten are still living with my parents in Germany. I am staying with the Papa family and I really enjoy being with them. Mrs. Papa is a P.E. teacher here at North. I arrived at the beginning of August and my impressions so far are very positive. In fact, Americans are very friendly people and it is easy for me to come into a positive contact with them. Actually, I see many interesting places and I think that my English language, one reason why I am here, has progressed too. This stay is really a great experience for me and a very profitable one for my entire life. I am very happy that I am here and I enjoy it very much. I also enjoyed the time I have spent at Granite City High School North. Jon Kastelic, a 1978 graduate of North, is well remembered for his outstanding contributions to the North Speech Department, as well as his academic achievements. Jon won the American Legion Contest as Illinois Oratorical Champion last year. This honor enabled him to attend the American Academy of Achievement in Kentucky. There he received a gold medal and a $1000 scholarship for his honors. Jon met such stars as Ed Asner, Cloris Leachman, Debbie Boone, and Dr. Edward Teller, inventor of the H-Bomb. One evening Col. Harland Sanders and Kentucky Fried Chicken hosted an informal picnic on the Green Estate, outside of Owenship. Of Col. Sanders Jon said, “I ' d like to have him for a grandfather.” Jon is presently attending Washington University in St. Louis and is studying law. We are very proud to share with you that he is carrying a straight “A” average. Congratulations Jon, and the best in everything you pursue. y aAteClc - State OuitosUca (£ ttfUKfUan 7 tfoat KVMU Row 1, L to R: Cindy Hand, Sherry Hamilton, Tina Ethridge, Mark Horvath, Paul Patrich Row 2: Donna Jones, Rudolph Votopaul, Andrew McGovern, Scott Blaylock. Our musical season at North starts two weeks before school opens and occupies the entire school year, marked by 50 t y y A performances, and goes into the early summer with a summer school session. The f r C ' vt ' CftMl North Band Department includes the National Award winning “Steel City Belles” pom-pon squad and the award winning “North Guard’ flag and rifle squads. The North Band is truly a “multi-media organization which changes with the season. In the fall, “The Marching Band from Steeler Land presents pre-game and half-time performances at football games. In the fall and spring, parades are also a part of their performance. In the fall and winter months, the Concert Band and Steeler Pep Bands are kept occupied with performances of formal concerts, a pop and pretzel informal concert, and appearances at basketball, wrestling, and soccer games. “This years band department is something special for their many faceted accomplishments and especially for their attitude of giving their talents to their school and community. They are setting a precedent which shall grow in years to come,” commented North Band Director, Robert D. Todoroff. tf ' uzttcte ' 7t U6 “Scutd f ?7X - t ?79 846 FLUTE Staton, Sherry Adams, Barry Kelley, Daniel Bowles, Ginger Ware, Lisa Barham, Tracy Mathis, Steven Clay, Christina Winters, Dawn Brandon, Deith Noeth, Jerome Coffman, Susan Woker, Susie Clay, Elizabeth Thornburg, Grant Conreaux, Laura Woker, Terri Crawford, Anna BASS HORN Corzine, Kenna Wyrostek, Christy Davis, Ronald Hart, Steven Gebhardt, Debbie BASS CLAR Fisher, Alan Herman, Christy Hart, Brenda Bush, William Free, Tim Jorgensen, Allen Herman, Kay Cuevas, Raquel Knipping, Kevin Jorgensen, Kristy Miller, Barbara Mann, Steven Lynn, Candice MALLET PERCUSSION Papp, Kelley Stark, Renee Maxfield, David Andrews, Kirk Pates, Evelyn CONTRA ALTO CLAR Monical, Laura Fever, Scott Rakowski, Kathleen Clay, Rebecca Monroe, Elmer Gargac, Karol Schaeffer, Kim Gonsales, Cindy Staicaff, Robert PERCUSSION Stone, Alisa BASSOON Stoker, Robert Copeland, Terry OBOE Jeffries, Lynn Unger, Richard Ferguson, John Andrews, Elana Stawar, Connie FRENCH HORN French, Paula Herbst, Beth Zimmersman, Don Buer, Debbie Gargac, Christa Pryor, Sherry ALTO SAX Hebblethwaite, Robyn Hevvlethwaite, Kim CLARINET Cuevas, Roberto Jorgensen, Robin Hubert, Chris Adams. I would like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to all the editors who devoted their time and effort to get the book out. I would also like to thank Tami Hill, Pam Carnahan, Donna Bauer, B. J. Lybarger, and Ray Gettleman (non-editors) for all the work they contributed. A very special thanks to Mr. Robert Johnson for his patience and guidance. Thanks, too, to the staff photographers and to the professionals, Mr. Nick Mangoff and Mr. Norman Mangoff of Hollywood-Andrews Studio. We also wish to extend our thanks to the GRANITE CITY PRESS RECORD for permission to use some of their file photos, and to members of the student body who brought photos to us.
