supeRintenPent of schools mp. b.j. Oc vis One of the great pleasures in my life has been the part I played in creating what is now Granite City High School North. To see a building develop from an idea to reality is a fantastic experience. To see a faculty and student body take that building and develop a school is even more of a thrill. To me, a school is much more than bricks and mortar. It’s a place for learning, a spirit, a commonalty of purpose, and a desire to enrich the lives of others. Granite City High School North’s faculty and students can take pride in the accomplishments they have attained and in the warm esprit de corps developed which is a legacy for future generations. assistant supeRintenOent mp. fpank kPAus Mr. Kraus, a native of Granite City, graduated from High School South in 1948. He completed a B.S. degree in education in 1954 from S.I.U., Carbondale. in 1957. He completed his M.S. in education from Indiana State University. He obtained a 6th year Specialist Certificate in 1971. Mr. Kraus served in the Air Force from 1951-53, then served as a teacher and coach at Lawrenceville, Illinois, and Granite City. He also has been Assistant Principal and Principal of Coolidge, Jr. High School. In 1967 he became the Assistant Superintendent for Community Unit District 9. 15

Dear North, I have addressed this letter to North because you, the students, make up the major elements of this school. 1 am so very proud to be a part of “our” school and take pride in all you accomplish. Having worked in several locations and having visited many, I remain steadfast in my belief GCHS North’s student body is one of the best. To our seniors, may all of your dreams come true. If you approach your careers with the same determina- tion and enthusiasm that you have shown at North, success will be yours. Your class now becomes part of North’s bright past and North sets proudly upon the foundation her first four classes have erected. To the returning students, may your classes take North’s banner and carry it forward boldly, while ex- ercising good judgment and establishi ng honor and dignity as North’s primary goals. You have inherited the responsibility to maintain North’s image and improve on her past accomplishments. Be assured we believe you will represent North as well as those who have gone before you. All of you, graduates and students, ARE and therefore make North, NULLI SECUNDUS. Best wishes, G. Walmsley 17
