Ingot ' ll • QRanite high noRth • 4950 Maryville Road Granite City, Illinois, 62040 Way OveR yondeR Way over yonder is a place that I know where I can find shelter from hunger and cold. And the sweet tasting good life is so easily found way over yonder that’s where I’m bound. I know when I get there, the first thing I’ll see is the sun shining golden-shining right down on me. Then trouble’s gonna lose me— worry leave me behind, and I’ll stand up proudly in true peace of mind. Way over yonder is place I have seen in a garden of wisdom from some long ago dream. Maybe tomorrow I’ll find my way to the land where the honey runs in rivers each day. And the sweet tasting good life is so easily found Way over yonder that’s where I’m bound. BlACkBIR Blackbird singing in the dead of night take these broken wings and learn to fly all your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise. Blackbird singing in the dead of night lake these eyes and learn to see all your life you were only waiting for this moment to be free. 4 the Way We weRe Memori es, light the comers of my mind. Misty water color memories, of the way we were. Scattered pictures, of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another, for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time rewritten every line? If we had a chance to do it all again, tell me. would we? Could we? StaiRway to heaven . . . And it ' s whispered that soon if we all call the tune then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long and the forests will echo with laughter. And it makes me wonder. If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow don’t be alarmed now it’s just a spring clean for the May-Queen. Yes. there are two paths you can go by but in the long run there’s still time to change the road you’re on. Your head is humming and it won ' t go— in case you don’t know. the piper ' s calling you to join him. Dear lady can you hear the wind blow and did you know your stairway lies on the whispering wind. And as we wind on down the road. our shadows taller than our soul. there walks a lady we all know who shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold. and if you listen very hard. the tune will come to you at last. when all is one and one is all. to be a rock and not to roll. And she’s buying a stairway to heaven. Simple man Mama told me when 1 was young, “Come sit beside me, my only son and listen closely to what I say, and if you do this, it will help you some sunny day. Take your time . . . don’t live too fast. Troubles will come and they will pass. Go find a woman and you’ll find love, and don’t forget, son, there is someone up above.” “And be a simple kind of man, be something you love and understand. Be a simple kind of man. Won’t you do this for me, son. if you can?” “Forget your lust for rich man’s gold. All that you need is in your soul, and you can do this if you try. All that 1 want for you, my son, is to be satisfied.” “Boy. don’t you worry . . . you’ll find yourself. Follow your heart and nothing else. And you can do this if you try. All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied.” II t: 4 . Oc vis One of the great pleasures in my life has been the part I played in creating what is now Granite City High School North. To see a building develop from an idea to reality is a fantastic experience. To see a faculty and student body take that building and develop a school is even more of a thrill. To me, a school is much more than bricks and mortar. It’s a place for learning, a spirit, a commonalty of purpose, and a desire to enrich the lives of others. Granite City High School North’s faculty and students can take pride in the accomplishments they have attained and in the warm esprit de corps developed which is a legacy for future generations. assistant supeRintenOent mp. fpank kPAus Mr. Kraus, a native of Granite City, graduated from High School South in 1948. He completed a B.S. degree in education in 1954 from S.I.U., Carbondale. in 1957. He completed his M.S. in education from Indiana State University. He obtained a 6th year Specialist Certificate in 1971. Mr. Kraus served in the Air Force from 1951-53, then served as a teacher and coach at Lawrenceville, Illinois, and Granite City. He also has been Assistant Principal and Principal of Coolidge, Jr. High School. In 1967 he became the Assistant Superintendent for Community Unit District 9. 15 nopth A ministRation and faculty Dear North, I have addressed this letter to North because you, the students, make up the major elements of this school. 1 am so very proud to be a part of “our” school and take pride in all you accomplish. Having worked in several locations and having visited many, I remain steadfast in my belief GCHS North’s student body is one of the best. To our seniors, may all of your dreams come true. If you approach your careers with the same determina- tion and enthusiasm that you have shown at North, success will be yours. Your class now becomes part of North’s bright past and North sets proudly upon the foundation her first four classes have erected. To the returning students, may your classes take North’s banner and carry it forward boldly, while ex- ercising good judgment and establishi ng honor and dignity as North’s primary goals. You have inherited the responsibility to maintain North’s image and improve on her past accomplishments. Be assured we believe you will represent North as well as those who have gone before you. All of you, graduates and students, ARE and therefore make North, NULLI SECUNDUS. Best wishes, G. Walmsley 17 assistant pRincipals Mr. Victor Buehler B.S. Ed., Illinois State University M.S. The 1975-76 track team had an unexpectedly good season. The team achieved a 5 win and 1 loss dual meet record with the one loss being by only 3 points. The team broke 8 school records during the season and placed fourth in the district meet. Five young men advanced to the state meet: David Kwiatkowski. High Hurdles; Dale Page. Pole Vault; Greg Landys, Pole Vault; Fred Clay, 220 Yard Dash; and Mike Baker, 2 mile. This was one of the most satisfying years I have ever had. This year’s team was one of the hardest working and competitive teams I have ever coached. They produced a winner where at first there was none. I am very proud of these young men and their achievements. Our record of 14 wins. 6 losses and 4 ties was respectable. However, for the first time in four years, we were eliminated from the state competition before the sectional championship game. We the team and the coach, all were contributors to our failure. As the coach. I failed to work the team hard enough. As a team, there was too much individual effort and not enough team- work. We will correct these flaws next season. Our six seniors were a steadying influence on the remaining eighteen underclassmen. My sincere thanks to the graduating seniors for all of their effort and dedication to the school and the team. A special “thank you” to Bob Yount and Steve Szeles who were the players to earn varsity soccer letters for four years. Steve Szeles also was honored by being named to the All-State team and the All-American team. His honors are richly deserved. If the ' 77 team will work as hard as Steve has we will rise to new heights. 170 The 1976-77 Junior Varsity soccer club produced one of the best records ever by a junior varsity team at North High School. Their record was 13 wins. 3 losses, and 1 tie. 1 hey scored 34 goals while holding their opponents to only 9. Moreover, this was one of the most talented teams I have ever had while at North. An added plus was that besides being talented, they were a fine group of young men. They are the promise of good things to come for North in soccer. What a remarkable group of students! With 90 instrumentalists, 22 Pom Pon Squad members and 22 newly organized Rifle and Flag Squad mem- bers, we’ve got to be the biggest team that puts forth a concerted effort around. 1 would like to pay tribute to our outstanding upperclassmen whose guidance has been invaluable and at the same time acknowledge the large group of Freshmen and Sophomores who have continued our growth and have done a superb job of filling in for our large Senior class of 75. As long as there are students of this calibre in our department. North will be well represented wherever they make an appearance. QirI’s Athletic Association One of the goals set by the Girls’ Athletic Association this year was to promote an interest in sports on an intramural and on an interscholastic basis. Seeking to find a means by which we might keep both aspects of sports alive, the girls athletic association has always offered participa- tion on an intramural basis to every girl in school, and we are hopeful that we can continue this. We feel that recreational sports have a valuable place in athletics, just as do the many social func- tions carried on throughout the year by our organization. 253 L. to R.: 1st row; G. Bartz, G.
