Washington Crossing the Delaware Emanuel Leutze’s famous painting of Washington crossing the Delaware was historically inaccurate. It was 1776 and Washington was leading his troops across the near-frozen river to surprise the British at Trenton. The painting shows the general standing gallantly in a small boat. Crouched at his feet are a number of loyal soldiers, and blowing defiantly in the cold wintry air is Old Glory. Any historian worth his salt would notice that Washington’s boat looks conspicuously like the boats used to haul wine along the Rhine in Leutze’s native Germany. It may be excusable under the privilege of artistic license, but the Stars and Stripes the artist shows fluttering at the stern was not even in existence until 1777. This Is Me! I Am Many Moods . . . I Am Many People . . . 3 I am a child. . . I like to play games and pretend 4 I am an adult . . . I can face the world and put out my hand to another. I Have A Need To Progress. I Am Knowledge . . I Know My Limits. I Can Experience, And I Will Learn! This is my country . . . . . . I Am Proud To Be A Part Of It. 10 Power, And I Am Spirit Courag I am what I believe. Know me for who I am. 12 rr r l J U K H Oj F VV f 15 Contents Sophomores . . Freshmen Sports Organizations Activities Index Board Administration . . But records only show who won or lost; they tell you nothing about the character of the team. We lost nine starters from the “74” team, and replacing them with lads who were without varsity experience was a job of great magnitude. The schedule in “75” was more difficult as we replaced some of the easier Illinois teams with five strong teams from the St. Louis area. We lost all five games, Marty Dooley, Coach Ames. 3rd ROW: Kevin Marcus, Steve Szeles, Mike Hill, Walt Gavlick, Rick Demaree, Kevin Gavlick, Butch Stefanoff, Mike Fitzgerald, Coach Kehoe. Soccer but gained the experience we so sorely needed. Proof of our improvement was our well earned 2-0 victory over a tough Collinsville team in the sub- sectional. We missed a repeat trip to the state tour- nament by a margin of one goal (penalty kick) in our 1-0 loss to a fine team from South in the finals of the sectional. To our graduating senior players, Coach Kehoe extends admiration and sincere wishes for success in the future. The examples they set in desire, teamwork, and sportsmanship cannot be ex- ceeded. The players have earned the respect of the other schools around as well as that of their male classmates. It’s an honor to be on the Steelerette Basketball team and it demands hard work, self- discipline, and desire. More freshmen came out this year than ever before and as the program grows, so will the quality of play. We hope to have in the near future, Junior High girl’s teams as well as Freshmen and Sophomore teams, so that more girls will have the opportunity to develop their talents, much the same as some of our com- peting schools. Trainers are people that dedicate their time to the preventing of and caring for injuries. The trainers are always present at every practice and game. They possess the knowledge to evaluate and care for the injured person. Trainers spend many hours at their job; they arrive at practice and games before the coaches, and remain afterward until everything has been taken care of. The rewards these young men and women receive are like grains of salt compared to the time they spend.
