Gilbert V. Walmsley, Principal High School North Mr. Walmsley was born on January 15, 1939, in East Alton, Illinois. He attended East Alton elementary schools, and graduated from East Alton-Wood River Community High School. He graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, in 1962, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts and Safety Education. He attended night school at S.I.U., Edwardsville, from 1962-65, in order to acquire a Master of Science degree in School Administration and Guidance. Prior to entering teaching in 1962, he worked as a production foreman at the Olin- Matheson plant in East Alton, Illinois. In 1962, he began teaching Industrial Arts at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. The following year, he came to Granite City Senior High School as an Industrial Arts and Driver’s Education teacher. From 1965-67, he was Guidance Counselor at the Senior High. In 1967, he became Assistant Principal at the Senior High School. In 1970, he became Prin- cipal of Prather Junior High, serving as principal there until he was named Principal-Elect of Granite City High School North, in 1972. During the year 1972-73, he supervised the design, building, and staffing of the new school, and in 1973-74 he became the first prin- cipal of North High School. 29
