North is youth aging!” Mrs. Isenburg “Our school is much more than a beautiful building. It is a closely knit community of administrators, teachers, students, and parents. I am extremely honored and proud to have been selected on the first faculty to staff Granite City High School North. The few problems and complications ex- perienced last year have enhanced the pride which I feel today, as I witness the daily routine of our school. I think this school is well organized. It is not only well organized but the students, faculty, and administration seem to be cooperative with each other. However, I think we should attempt to improve our curriculum and give the students more choices. Many parents and students were in fact upset with the possibility that they may be placed in North ' s District, Since that time we at North have Proved” ourselves to be as worthy of the recognition and honors that can be awarded as any major high school in the state. When in two short years, a group of widely diversified individuals with a multiplicity of interests can come together and begin to forge a con- crete foundation of ‘group centered ' purposes, then we’ve got the makings of a tremendous school. When in today’s society the ‘big thing ' is ‘do your thing for yourself’ and ‘don ' t worry too much about the other guy’, it’s most gratifying to witness day by day the interaction of our North student body in their day by day contact ‘hanging in there, and taking interest in the other guy’.” Robert Todoroff Gail Mueller B.S. Our curriculum enables the students to get a fine preparation for later life in many different areas. The students have many extra-curricular activities in which they may participate. R.— CHANGE IS SOMETIMES BEST I have this friend, he’s quite a card. He drinks, smokes, and is rather hard On the English language. In short, I guess he’s a radical (of a sort). Radical or not, he has quite a way With females, and woos them night and day. (Which makes one want to stop and think If femaledom is on the brink Of self-destruction. Or if it is just That they find all radicals a must”.) Most consider his so-called life, as of late, As nothing more than smoke, drink, date. While some would consider this paradise, To others it’s a mess, as in my eyes. But since I ' ve no influence, life must go on. I’ll be a king and he’ll be a pawn. Of course, to him, things may be the other way around. I do believe this story is beginning to sound As if I’m confused. I thought he was going inevitably down, Until I noticed his face, upon which is never a frown. I do believe I’ll take a long-earned rest, And review my life, which seems to be in a mess. And if his clothes are ragged and he is somewhat poor, Are you ashamed to say he’s a friend of yours? And if he’s young with new ideas or his hair is long and free, Then you say he’s trying to harm your country. And what about your country You say you love so true? Those never-ending skies that used to be so blue Now are filled with smoke and smog, ail because of you. Your land of the free and home of the brave From the littered streets they’re trying to save. And your crystal blue waters that were once so clean, Now are nothing, but an ugly shade of green. You claim you love your country, And your fellow countrymen. If so, then why do you do things to harm Your fellow friend and land? In order to win they would have to play smart, But the win would be decided in each player’s heart. And when the game would finally begin, The team with the most desire to win Would march on the field and look very bold And would try its hardest to shoot the ball in the goal. The stands were crowded and everyone screamed With cheers and songs in support of their team. Excitement would grow as both teams moved forth, Half were for South and half were for North. Now the Steelers can win in any weather, For as a team, they stick together And each time, they pass to any teammate They ' re working for that great goal of State! South scoring first, it looked like North’s fate, But the Steelers were tough and it wasn’t too late For they increased the pressure more and more, And with seconds remaining, North evened the score! In the overtime their adrenalin flowed And, as if told the outcome, they all would know That the Warriors would lose on this Tuesday night, But they wouldn’t go down without a heck of a fight. Now, as if the Warriors were put in a noose, The North Steelers power soon broke loose. Overpowering opponents, they raced to the ball, And bombarded the goalie with shots without pall. Although the statistics had leaned South ' s way, They wished they hadn’t come to North that day. For on North’s field, in that hot sun South dropped the decision, two to one! Now the team was all happy, and everyone did know, That the happiest of all was Mr. Kehoe. And he was so happy that he shed a tear For North gained revenge for their losses last year. by Dave Hatsher ROW ONE: Leo Martin, Al Pelate, Ed Schmidt, Bill Carr, Paul John Scott, Jeff Reiter, Dennis McBride, Mike Waldo, Mark Davis Stayduhar, Harvey Breckner, John Harding, Dennis Hahn, Jeff Larry Petri, Bill Dickerson. The lads who wore the black and gray knew what result they were aiming for — the state tournament! I had told them in August that they had the talent to reach the tournament, but that it would take hard work to get there. Now, everyone wants to succeed, but some want to so much that they are willing to work for it. They worked long and hard in practice and in competition. They were involved in six sudden-death overtime games and lost only one of them. Their pride, desire, and tale nt gave North its first I.H.S.A. Sectional championship on the afternoon of November 5, 1974, when they beat South for the right to go to the state tournament. We were eliminated from the state tournament by New Trier, the eventual state champion, which eased our sorrow, somewhat. Someone once said that “happiness can only be earned.” If that is true, the ’74 Steeler soccer players should be a happy bunch, because they sure earned it. I hope everyone at North is as proud of them as I am; another job well done, lads! Being the first girls bowling team from North to win a District Tournament was indeed a great honor. Oh, that’s someone who makes dogs, lions, and seals do tricks for people! To most of you this is what you think when you hear the word “trainer . Well, as you may have already assumed, th at is not what we mean. Trainers are people that dedicate their time to the preven- ting of and caring for injuries. The trainers are always pre- sent at every practice and game. They possess the knowledge to evaluate and care for the injured person. Trainers spend many hours at their job; they arrive at practice and games before the coaches, and remain afterward until everything has been taken care of. The rewards these young men and women receive are like grains of salt compared to the time they spend. In fact, most coaches don’t give them credit or thanks. They are the unknown athletes both on and off the field. Mr. Biggerstaff 210 Varsity Soccer; Nina Failoni, Janet Bunselmeyer, Cheryl Smith, Sandy Smith, Sharon Koesterer.
