Gilbert V. Walmsley, Principal High School North Mr. Walmsley was bom on January 15, 1939 in East Alton, Illinois. He attended East Alton elementary schools, and graduated from East Alton-Wood River Community High School. He graduated from Southern Illinois Uni- versity at Carhondale, in 1962, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts and Safety Education. He at- tended night school at S.I.U., Edwardsville, from 1962-65, in order to acquire a Master of Science degree in School Administration and Guidance. Prior to entering teaching in 1962, he worked as a production foreman at the Olin-Matheson plant in East Alton, Illinois. In 1962, he began teaching Industrial Arts at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. The following year, he came to Granite City Senior High School as an Industrial Arts and Driver’s Education teacher. From 1965-67, he was a Guidance Counselor at the Senior High. In 1967, he became Assistant Principal at the Senior High School. In 1970, he became Principal of Prather Junior High, serving as principal there until he was named Principal-Elect of Granite City High School North, in 1972. During the year 1972-73, he supervised the design, building, and staffing of the new school, and this year he became the first principal of North High.
