Sealed : Mr Gerald McKechan (Secretary), Mr. Dewey Mellon (President), Mrs. lolene Travis-Terrel. Standing Mr Ulan Crider, Mr David Partney, Mr L. Monroe Worthen (Treasurer). Not Pictured: Mr. Kelly Hogan. BOARD OF EDUCATION 1986 The seven member board of education for Community Unit 9 School District is elected by the voters, serving the people of this school district without pay. In 1985, Thomas Miofsky retired from the board, leaving a vacancy, and Ruth Lahr, Alan Crider, and L. Monroe Worthen were up for re-election. Worthen, the senior member of the board, who has served since 1960, was the leading vote getter out of a field of ten, winning another term. Alan Crider was re-elected to his seat on the board, and Gerald McKechan, a former teacher and coach in Granite City, was elected a new member. Ruth Lahr was defeated, and Jolene Travis-Terrel was elected a new member. The newly reorganized board has chosen £. Dewey Melton as the president until November, 1986. Gerald McKechan was chosen secretary of the board, and L. Monroe Worthen was elected school treasurer. The function of the board of education is to determine the basic policies to be followed by the staff and students of the school district. We wish them well in this difficult endeavor. 18

DR. MAX £ REDMOND SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Granite City Community Unit 9 School District is very fortunate in having a new superintendent for the school year 1985-86. Dr. Redmond held positions in Missouri and Iowa before coming to Granite City. After completing a B.S.Ed. degree in mathematics at Arkansas State University, he taught math and coached at Tuscumbia, Mo. He was a high school principal and math teacher at Springfield, Iowa, and after completing a MS. Ed. degree at Arkansas State, he became Superintendent of Schools at Central City, Iowa. He was Assistant Superintendent at Fort Madison, serving from 1974 through 1980, while at the same time earning a Ph.D. degree in Administration and Education from the University of Iowa. In 1981, he was Superintendent of Schools at Hayti, Mo., and from 1983 to 1985, he was Superintendent at Braggadocio, Mo. Dr. Redmond is strongly committed to excellence in education. He feels that the only real opportunity for many children is an education, and that children, as well as others, achieve more when more is expected. He believes that cultivating a positive self- image in children and creating a proficiency in basic skills should be two of our top educational priorities. The Staff and student body of Granite City Senior High School welcome Dr. Redmond to our school district. We wish him the utmost success in achieving his educational goals within our school district.
