Official seal In 1967, the Warrior yearbook staff introduced the official seal for Granite City Senior High School. Its design is the result of the combined ideas of several members of the yearbook staff. At top center is the lamp of learning above a shield surmounted by the motto, “Wisdom.’ In the left upper segment of the shield is a quill and inkstand, representing scholarship; to the right of it is the gavel of democratic parliamentary procedure, and below is the book of knowledge, opened through scholarly endeavor. Below the shield is the Latin inscription, “Scientia Ipsa Potestas Est.” (Knowledge, itself, is power.) Surrounding all is the continuou s chain linking the senior classes of Granite High. At the bottom is the founding date of the first high school in Granite City, 1898. 2
