AD IN MEMORIAM Mr. Russell D. Johnson, Superintendent of Schools, Granite City Community Unit School District 9. In November, 1966, we were saddened by the sudden death of a man who has long served the citizens of this community as a teacher and administrator, Mr. Russell D. Johnson. Mr. Johnson was born on December 4, 1900, in Moline, Illinois, where he attended the public schools. After attending Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, from 1918- 1921, he taught mathematics and industrial arts at Michigan City, Indiana. In 1923, he married Ertha Maria Lindenmeyer. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have three children, Russell D. Jr., Ertha Ann, and Ruth Marie. In 1925, Mr. Johnson received his A.B. degree from Augustana College. In 1926, he came to Granite City and taught mathematics in the high school from 1926-1941. He became Assistant Principal in 1941, and he was Principal from 1950- 1955. In 1950, he received a Master’s degree from Washington University. In 1955, he became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Community Unit 9, and in 1964, he be- came Superintendent, serving in that capacity until his death. Mr. Johnson stood for integrity and service, providing a major contribution to the education of the youth of the area. 16
