Text from Pages 1 - 248 of the 1967 volume:

ma icniiiiiMiiiiiiamii, Beneath the smoke of an expanding industrial city . . . 2 3 GRANITE 9 But . . . with a living spirit 12 that is all its own 13 Out of the Past the Present HISTOR Y OF GRANITE HIGH In 1898, the first high school was established in Granite City in a small frame church, the Kinderhook Church, located on what is now the Emerson School grounds. This was the year that Granite City was incorporated as a municipality. In 1903, the enrollment was 10 boys and 18 girls. As the population grew, the high school was moved to the second floor of the McKinley School building, and then to the building currently occupied by Central Junior High School. By 1913, the high school had five teachers and one principal. By 1919, this building had become so crowded that the school was run in two shifts. On September 26, 1921, the high school was moved to the central, or academic portion of the present building, which was constructed in 1920, on the Fehling tract site. En- rollment at the time was 425 students. On January 26, 1921, the first class of eight boys and eight girls graduated from the new Community High School, a four year insti- tution. It is interesting to note that in 1925, our present principal, Mr. Lawrence C. McCauley, was President of his senior class of 56 students. In 1930, the enrollment was up to 964, and by 1940, it had increased to 1638, but from 1940-1945, it remained fairly constant, due to World War II. The auditorium was added in 1924, the rear central wing in 1927, and the vocational wing in 1928. In 1940-41, a wing connecting the vocational and academic areas was built. The Memorial Gymnasium was built in 1956. This was followed by two new classroom wings in 1960, and finally, the new cafeteria building was added this year, 1966. The high school campus consists of an area of 27 acres, which is shared by Coolidge Junior High School, fronting Nameoki Road. The Community High School had as Superintendents, Mr. W. F. Coolidge, Mr. Virgil BufTord, and Mr. Paul A. Grigsby. In 1950, the high school was incorporated into Community Unit School District 9, becoming a three year senior high school institution. It has had as Superintendents, Mr. Paul Grigsby, Mr. Harold Kaiser, and Mr. Russell D. Johnson, our present Superin- tendent. Mr. Russell D. Johnson and Mr. Lawrence C. McCauley have served as Prin- cipals. Mr. Steve Jones and Mr. Tom Noeth are Assistant Principals. The office force consists of four secretaries, aided by voluntary student help. There are 1 1 1 teachers, two librarians, 12 department heads, eight counsellors, one nurse, 22 custodians, and 22 cafeteria workers, providing a staff for 2620 students in their sophomore, junior and senior years. Of these, 725 will be in the graduating class this year. Out of the past, we have built the present, Granite City Senior High School, 1967. 14 OFFICIAL SEAL Granite City Senior High School This year, the 1967 Warrior yearbook staff is proud to introduce the new official seal for Granite City Senior High School. Its design is the result of the combined ideas of several members of the yearbook staff. At top center is the lamp of learning above a shield surmounted by the motto, “Wisdom.” In the left upper segment of the shield is a quill and inkstand, representing scholarship; to the right of it is the gavel of democrat- ic parliamentary procedure, and below is the book of knowledge, opened through scholarly en deavor. Below the shield is the Latin inscription, Scientia Ipsa Potestas Est. (Knowledge, itself, is power) Surrounding all is the continuous chain linking the senior classes of Granite High. At bottom is the founding date of the first high school in Granite City, 1898. The art work is by Joan Mowery of the Warrior staff, and the American Yearbook Company. We are indebted to Miss Mildred Iffrig for her advice concerning the Latin Inscription. 15 AD IN MEMORIAM Mr. Russell D. Johnson, Superintendent of Schools, Granite City Community Unit School District 9. In November, 1966, we were saddened by the sudden death of a man who has long served the citizens of this community as a teacher and administrator, Mr. Russell D. Johnson. Mr. Johnson was born on December 4, 1900, in Moline, Illinois, where he attended the public schools. After attending Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, from 1918- 1921, he taught mathematics and industrial arts at Michigan City, Indiana. In 1923, he married Ertha Maria Lindenmeyer. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have three children, Russell D. Jr., Ertha Ann, and Ruth Marie. In 1925, Mr. Johnson received his A.B. degree from Augustana College. In 1926, he came to Granite City and taught mathematics in the high school from 1926-1941. He became Assistant Principal in 1941, and he was Principal from 1950- 1955. In 1950, he received a Master’s degree from Washington University. In 1955, he became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Community Unit 9, and in 1964, he be- came Superintendent, serving in that capacity until his death. Mr. Johnson stood for integrity and service, providing a major contribution to the education of the youth of the area. 16 M IN I ST R A TION Mr. L. Monroe VVorthen President Dr. E. W. The seniors: some are laughing But most just calmly sigh, A few thank God it’s over While others simply cry. Graduation will come at last And last it true will be — Last meeting of the good, good friends That never again we’ll see. And now this day is over And no one can deny The school days here have given us The happiness nothing can buy. Our books and written papers At last are put away, But soon those dusty pieces Will brighten a new day. 103 Beneath the smoke of an expanding industrial city, there is a school which has meant much to many — This is Granite High School. Our school has a glorious history of sixty-nine years, and is now one of the largest schools in the state. This was a year characterized by a period of change. New clubs were organized, new projects started, a new cafeteria was built, and a new superintendent was appointed. Our school is just a pinpoint in a rapid-paced world, a world in which technology seems to control everything. Five countries now have The Bomb, we are presently engaged in war, and much of our resources are being diverted to the conflict. Increasing strides are being made in research on cancer, heart, and birth defects. Modern society does not stand still. Our school has prepared us to be leaders and loyal followers in this nuclear age. Some will go overseas to fight for our nation, some will go into research to help humanity, but all will back our nation by their following and support. Today we are but a fragment of the world, but tomorrow we become a part of it. Thirteen years ago 725 five year olds toddled off to kindergarten, giving no thought to the idea that one day they would be graduating from Granite High. During these past thirteen years, we have picked up a valuable educational background, but most importantly, we have made friends, had fun, and developed our personalities and capabilities for future life. “Rich man! Poor man! Beggarman! Thief!” “Doctor! Lawyer! Indian chief!” Remember those grade school days? It was a light and carefree time — a time which will never be repeated. Remember recess with all of its games — hop-scotch, jump rope, stoop tag, square- dancing, marbles, jacks. Remember the fads, sports, and activities — hoola-hoops, kites, airplanes, model cars, school patrols, sports day, elimination, flag football, 600 yd. walk-run? All of these soon passed however, and we found ourselves a part of the class of 1967. September, 1961, brought this class to a time of change, experi- mentation, and excitement. We eagerly (?) left the games and toys of grade school to accept the more adult world of Central, Coolidge, and Prather — Junior High at last! The boys tried out for sports, becoming Indians, Braves, and Chiefs. In the meantime, the girls all tried out for cheerleading. In class, the boys learned to make coin purses and candy dishes while the girls studied the art of homemaking, but everyone learned to make noise and cause trouble. Writing notes was a chronic problem, but nothing like the problems people had at the Wash- ington. Remember when R. T. was told “don’t”, or when Jim kicked the whole left section out? The girls had swinging slumber parties every other weekend with “wrestling” as the pastime, and the boys gathered to play basketball, football, and, of course, pool. But, somehow, the boys and girls always seemed to turn up together. Remember 108 Sock hops, summer camps, tennis and ice skating all had their moments of glory, but forever popular were the mixed parties, hayrides, and picnics to Pere Marquette that our class inherited on becoming Freshmen. Back at school, Jim G. was President of the Coolidge Student Council. At Prather, Jim S. was Mr. Irresistible; just ask Katie. In the meantime, Rattfinks were officially formed, thanks to Bob and Terry. Card games took place continually, and seemingly Rog was in a fight, continual- ly. Knee socks and bows were the big rage for girls, and for Jim, going bald must have been it. (Mr. Clean overnight). And of course, we’ll never forget “Little Richard” as the muscleman of the biology classes or any of our dissecting or bug-collecting experiences. But most memorable was Carol’s New Year’s Eve parties. Her back room really came in handy — remember when koze almost got kissed. But then, time passed rapidly, and almost before we knew it, we were Sophomores. When 109 After three years of mental disorder, we were promoted to the “Big Building” where students of Prather and Coolidge were united to make up the glorious class of “67” We made known our presence by joining every club and organization open to us. Dean and Connie led our Sophomore class as president and vice-president. Flip and Linda were our actor and actress. Remember when Richie P. forgot his lines in our Sopho- more class play, “The Mouse that Roared” . . . ? Sherry and Vicki were chosen as cheerleaders and Ron helped out as vice-president of the Student Body . . . Our Junior year was the greatest. Student body elections showed the hottest and most exciting week of campaigning, ever. Jr. Follies were hilarious; our prom was beautiful. Kathy and Ginger, co-chairmen, chose “Polynesian Paradise” as the theme. Our class colors were chosen . . . PINK AND BURGUNDY (??) The boat excursion was . . . fiagless, thanks to Candy, Kathy, Alice, Jayne, and Cheryl . . . Yeah, class officers! ! ! no And then, at last ... all of the hopes and dreams of graduation turned into reality. We finally made it to the top. “Seniors!” Jim was elected President of our class with Candy, Vicki and Katie filling in. We started the year by forming the biggest and best Red Peppers ever. Col did a fine job as President. We backed our Fighting Warriors all the way. Remember all of our cool Pep Rallies?? The first two rows of the Audi- torium were always filled! Pete led the Student Body as President. Our Homecoming play, “Bye Bye Birdie,” was a smash sell out. Remember Bob in those tight gold pants?? Vicki and Terry reigned as Harvest Queen and King. Dan and Dave were named Mr. T.D. and Mr. Harrier. Jim and Terry led our Basketball team as co-cap- tains, and we captured the Dupo Championship. We’ll never forget the Madison game. Our wrestlers, led by Ray had a fine season. After taking districts and sectionals, we sent Jerry, Bruce, Ray, Bill, and Jan to State . . Katie, Vicki, and Terry were chosen to represent them as queens. Sharon was named “Miss School Spirit.” The Spring Formal was beautiful with “Carousel” as the theme. Mr. King chose “Get Smart” as our Sr. Class Play. Remember all the trips?? — New York, Detroit, New Orleans, and all of the good times we had. But, as usual, good times must come to an end; perhaps they will be replaced by better times, but even so, they cannot detract from our remem- brance of these times. For this was our class. The unforgettable class of ’67 . . . Ill January -s WARRIORS Junior Class Officers: Donna Ferro, Treasurer; Roselyn Zotti, President; Jean Granklanoff, Secretary; Mary Harris, Vice-president. Cheerleading Squad The Granite High sports fans were led loyally during all football games, basketball games, and wrestling meets by the energetic Warrior cheerleaders. A sense of school spirit was instilled in all spectators by the familiar sounds of “G-R-A-N-I-T-E”, “T-RAH-RAH”, “We LIKE Our Team”, and many more cheers. The cheerleaders are chosen in March by representatives of the faculty and the student body. They are judged on their ability, personality, and appearance. In order to try out, one must maintain a “C” average, and be active in Red Peppers. The cheerleaders were competently advised by Miss Sylvia Evangeloff. 225 Vicki Duncan Katie Kaseberg Cheerleading Squad June Fowler Sherry Talley June Fowler Katie Kaseburg Holiday Toni Fuchs Wrestling Terry Potter Jean Graklanoff District Pat Patton Queens Chris Dufner Vicki Duncan 229 Dan Partney Colleen Robertson Dave Lomax Mr. Touchdown Mr. Harrier The greatest honor that could be bestowed on a football player or on a member of the Cross Country team is to be named “Mr. Touchdown” or “Mr. Harrier,” the most valuable member of the team. A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS Many days have passed since our first glimpse into schoolroom doors; thirteen years of seemingly long and challenging days. But now we wonder how they passed so quickly. These were happy days — gay and carefree. They were characterized by activities and friendships that will long be remembered. Yet, these years were more; they were a period in which we studied, formulated ideas, and learned a way of life. Now we are concluding this period. These last three years have been, and will remain, the highlight of our lives. For seniors, this book will be a memorial to those happy times. For the underclass- men, it will be a reminder that their high school days are almost over and that they, too, will soon be turned out into the world. The seniors have now reached that point. Soon they will leave their alma mater and go their own way. Some will seek employ- ment, some will further their education, some will journey to distant places; but all will forever remain members of the Granite High “Class of ’67.” This edition, Warrior ’67, is symbolic of this class, this school, and this school year, 1966-67. The editors and staff have done everything possible to make this book an accurate and enjoyable remembrance of our school, Granite High.
