Losing only two of their nine games, our football team fin- ished their season with high con- ference standing. Although many of the players are graduating, Coach Morrison is looking forward to an even better season in gridiron battle next season. Co- captains this year were seniors , Jerry Lybarger and Ernie Kern. Our great wrestling team posted a 23 and 1 season in dual meets, and their only defeat was to the 1964 Missouri State wrestling champions, Melville, by one point. Our outstanding wrestlers who qualified for State were Bill Fuchs, Steve Cavenaugh, Rich Bledsoe, Rich Grizzard, Gary Forshee, and John Evendon. To qualify for the state tournament the wrestler has to finish in first or second place in district and sectional tournaments. Bill Fuchs was undefeated at 95 pounds and Rich Bledsoe was also undefeated at 127, going into the State Tournament. Our Warriors had only one set back this season, when Tom Miofsky suffered a broken arm in the Holiday Tournament. The one man responsible for the great success of our Warrior wrestling team is the great red-headed coach of Granite High, Coach Schmitt, better known as Schmitty to all who know him. During the season Coach Schmitt achieved the 200th win of his career at Granite High, and the loss to Melville broke the winning streak of 133 consecutive wins in downstate competition. 132 Ernie Mills, Dennis Myracle, Gus Schalkman, Brian La Mew, Row 2 David Schwendeman, Dewey Bell, George Moran, Marvin Fitzpatrick, Bruce Ellis, Gary Leonard, Ray Hankins, Row 3 Jim Stevens, Randy Russio, Tom Jateff, Rich Paoll, Eddie Eubanks, Jerry Lapinski, Larry Stewart, Coach Burkhardt uni or 9 133 BOTTOM ROW: John Cornett, Bill Grabell 1ST ROW: Jerry Lybarger, Bill O ' Neill, Elmer Worthan, Vince Debevc, Mike Range, Larry Dillard 2ND ROW: Joe Hauptman, Terry Moore, Virgil Kambarian, Forrest Swan, Joe Graboski, Larry Ripka, Mike Prichard. Joe Groboski and Virgil Kambarian made their presence known by the fine re- bounding they did game after game. Jerry Lybarger, Vince Debevc and Larry Ripka did most of the ball handling. Our team did its job on the court and represented our school, and our spirit. The War- riors, with the fine coaching of Head Coach, Joe Fedora, and As- sistant Coach, Gale Garbe, posted a season ' s record of 24 wins and 10 losses. Of the 10 games lost by the Warriors, 9 games were lost by a one run margin. The Warriors finished 4th in Con- ference and were the District and Regional Champions, losing the final game in the Sectional Tournament to Springfield Griffin High, 2 to 1, in 9 innings. Springfield Griffin went on to win the State Tournament. Coach Fedora is looking for- ward to an even more successful season with the return of a substantial number of lettermen. A major problem that journalism students face is the written interpretation of an event in the clearest and most concise lan- guage. The techniques of writing fea- tures, news, editorials, and columns are taught in the beginning journalism classes. Interviewing and copyreading are taught, also. By reading and studying major city newspapers and superior high school publications, students learn the principles and acquire the skills to pro- duce the Granite High World. The class also studies modern publishing and advertising techniques. 168 Front Row L-R, K. Durbin, A. Meyer, D. Baumberger, P. Mr. R. Johnson, Advisor. Third Row L-R, D. Harris, R. Kawula, B. Yevln. The 1965 Warrior, sponsored by Mr. Robert Johnson, is a chronicle of our high school events through-out the year. Work began for this year ' s book during the summer months. Our editor, Mary Church, assistant editor, Joan Harris, and the staff, have worked hard to make the 1965 issue of the Warrior, a book to remember. We hope that in the years to come, you will look back at our Warrior and relive all the many things that have hap- pened at Granite City Senior High School during 1964-65. With their red and black skirts swirling, they cheer our team on to victory. Their pep and vitality is a great asset to the morale of the team as is the good sportmanship and enthusiasm which they arouse in the student G -formation, JoAnn Gwin, Barb Bickhaus, Chris Daughtery, Jahn Stroheide, Paula Hays, Donna Miskell, body. Marking the end of the football season is the Mr. Touchdown Dance honoring the entire football team. The cheerleaders have made this an annual event to which all of the students look forward. The wrestling queens are chosen for their interest in the sport and also for attendance at meets. Those who reigned over the Holiday Tournament were Lynn Sneed, Janice Schumacher, and Pam Parkinson. Reigning over the District Tournament were Chris Daugherty, Linda Harris, and Jo Ann Gwin. 199 ?«. ember WL en The class of 1965 began in Central in the 7th grade, where everyone made new friends. The boys went out for all the sports and the girls tried out for cheerleading. Then, the 8th grade split us up. Some kids went to Prather and others to Coolidge. That year some girls were sent home for wearing culottes. Then came the glorious year when we were on top 9th grade. Coolidge had an undefeated and almost unscored upon foot- ball team. Belleville scored 12 points on us in our last game, but our Braves came through with a victory. Remember when the Pomeroy twins and Rickey broke a plate- glass window on the Admiral and everyone chipped in to help pay for it, and when we got caught going to Reese ' s during P.E.? Chuck ' s name was placed on the trophy for making the most free throws, Mary Lynn was Coolidge Wrestling Queen and Art Heidke was Mr. Irresistable. That year was popular for going steady, at least to Rickey and Vince, it was. Slam Books were the big thing. Joan led the Student Council at Coolidge with a firm hand. Then we went to the Big House, where Coolidge and Prather were com- bined into one big group, the Class of 65. We invaded every club, organization, and activity they would let us join. Bernie was in the Homecoming Play, our Sopho- more Basketball team was great, and Onions in the Stew, was our Sophomore Class Play. Mary Lynn was our cheer- leader. Then we moved one more step up the ladder to be Juniors. Johnny led our class with Mary, Carolyn and Jonetta helping out. This was the year for our Junior Bake Sale, the biggest Junior F ollies, ever, and a beautiful Prom. Our cheer- leaders were Mary, Paula, Evelyn, Dolores, Marcia, Janice, Janie and Donna. Clara was Basketball Queen and Donna, Pat, and Mary were chosen Sweethearts. Finally, we were Seniors. Our football team was great; a 7-2 record. We took State in wrestling, with Rich and Steve placing. Carolyn, and Student Body Presi- dent, Tom, were our Homecoming King and Queen, Nick was chosen Mr. Touchdown, and Joe and Jerry got All-State. Jonetta 202 was chosen Miss School Spirit and John was our Warrior. Mary and Joan edited the Warrior , while Dolores, Marcia, Cynthia, and Gloria, worked on the High World and all % ! broke lose. After waiting Seven- teen Years, we beat East Side. Luck brought our teams through with victories. Squad members were our new red blazers to away games. We had the first dance honor- ing the basketball players and grapplers. Senior couples were Pat and Gary, Mary and Rick, Rich and Paula, Dolores andJoe, Jonetta and Vince, Maureen and Nick, Ann and Larry, Jerry and Pat, Evelyn and Ray, and Doug and Jill. Everything happened which could bring five vears of happiness to a class. This was our class of 1965. 203 Mary Church, Editor •Toan Harris, Assistant Editor 206 J Vote 3 rom We, the students of Granite City Senior High School, are now in the final years of our secondary education. The past years have been formative ones for us. Many events, achieve- ments, and emotions have gone into the molding of our young adult personalities. This yearbook is devoted to one of those exciting years. Although primary emphasis is placed on the activities of the graduating senior class, this chronicle of events is also dedicated to the underclassmen, who soon will be seniors, themselves. Through this book, the 1965 Warrior, we have taken the activities of the preceeding year and transformed them into permanent impressions. Most of us will remember them with much happiness, tinged, somewhat, by some remorse for those things we failed to do when we had the opportunity.
