Journalism Beginning journalism attempts to teach communication through the written word. Try- ing to report or interpret an event in the clearest and most concise method possible perplexes journalism students for many weeks. The techniques of writing features, news, editorials, and columns, interviewing, and copyreading are taught in the beginning class. By reading and studying major city news- papers and highly rated high school publi- cations, students learn to recognize good journalism principles and acquire ideas for improving the High World. Practical experience in journalism is gained when the cub staff puts out an edition of the High World . The class also studies the fate of today ' s press and the methods and purpose of modern advertising. ROW ONE: Left to Right, K. Tegel, Miss Ifrig, B. Morisson, G. Alford, J. Holman, M. Kula. After Baccalaureate and Gradua- tion we said good-b ye to many memory filled years at Granite High!!! In Memoriam MR. ARTHUR HABEKOST 1905-1963 TEACHER Mr. Arthur W. Habekost, a teacher of social studies at Granite City Senior High School for the past thirty-three years, this summer succumbed to an illness which struck him during the spring of 1963. Mr. Habekost had taught American History for the past several years, but he had also been an instructor of economics and world history. A life-long resident of Granite City, he graduated from high school here in 1925, after lettering in track, football, baseball, and basketball. He was also president of the Illiolian Literary Society for two years. Mr. Habekost set a Granite City High School track record in the 100 yard dash of 9.9, which still stands. He graduated from Millikin University in 1930, where he was a member of the football and base- ball teams. Mr. Habekost was an avid sportsman, founding the Illinois Federation of Sportsmen ' s Clubs, of which he was a past president. He was a Republican precinct and central committeeman, and a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He is sadly missed by those who knew him. A teacher affects eternity: He can never tell where his influence stops. Henry Adams 197 VIRGIL MALMBERG, Editor JERRY NELSON, Assistant Editor A Note From The Editor Seventeen years ago, we, the seniors of Granite High, inherited a legacy of post-war uncertainty. We were born on the threshold of the new frontier of space-age technology. For twelve years we have been preparing ourselves for the tremendous responsibilities which will soon be ours. The culmination of this first period of education is at hand. Perhaps this last year will be considered the most influential period of our high school days as we reflect on those days in the future. It has been the desire of the yearbook staff to provide you with a record of the achievements and disappointments we all experienced during our senior year. We trust that this chronicle of events will become increasingly more valuable as the years progress. This year was essentially the same as any high school year; we studied, had fun, experienced sad moments of trial and error as a part of the learning process. There were brief moments of glory for some of us in sports, musical, and dramatic productions. W ' e all shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines. These impressions we hoped to preserve in the pages of this book. As this senior class graduates, another will take its place. We wish the best of luck to the juniors and sophomores who will be succeeding us. We feel sure they will carry on the fine traditions of Granite High. Many of us who will graduate this year will spend the next four years at college. Others will make their bid for a secure place in our technological society. To all the seniors, I wish the best of luck for a successful future. Virgil Malmberg Editor m V I _ i , ÂŤ A F t â T f. 1 Jrfc
