To be eligible for membership, a student must be able to show outstanding ability in music, have an A average in music, a B in other subjects and participate in either band or vocal music for one year. The local chapter of the Modern Music Masters was installed at Gran- ite High in June, 1957. Mr. Meek and Mr. Simpkins or- ganized the chapter and are sponsors of the group. Granite City Senior Our school band is one of the most active and interesting organizations at Granite High. The band, under the direction of Mr. Louis Meek, does much to promote and stimulate school spirit. The band enjoys playing at the football and basketball games, homecoming, baccalaureate, and various concerts. ‘Each year the members of the band who have met certain requirements are eligible to take a trip to some interesting part of the country. Last year the band spent five days in New Orleans. There they enjoyed a tour of the French Quarters and an excursion on the famous ship, President. This year the band is looking forward to a trip to Florida. The students of Granite High wish to thank these students for all they do for our school and community. 94 High School Band CLARINETS Ruth Bauman Eileen Boushard Lana Burton Gloria Caban Sharon Clark Donna Cox Michael Davis Marvin Dollins Sherry Duncan Diana Ferguson Carol Grizzard Pamela Handlon Diane Humphrey Cheryl Jung Linda Klekamp Sharon Kunneman Barbara Sacewell Beverly Long Cathy McMillan Karen Owens Kay Rheinhardt Paula Senak Linda Thurston Waller Vidan Constance Wallace CORNETS Eddie Canada Frank Cozart Emmert Dannenberg George Dombek Sheldon Hendricks James Labanosky Dan Lieurance Gerald McKenna Ro! ert Opich Harold Setzer Joseph Shane Sharon Strauser Wayne Tarris David Toth Virven Trigg Mike Upton Kenneth Wille Taber Willets Jack Wood FLUTES Jane Craft Barbara Gray Judy Karlechik James LeGrand Linda Naney Sandra Parker Barbara Pyle Karen Segar Debrah Spengler Judy Stegelmeyer Marv Veloff TYMPANI Gerald Hefferly Phyllis Randall ENGLISH HORN Donna West TWIRLERS Cathy Jones Donna Stayduhar Judy Stegelmeyer FRENCH HORN Dennis Durbin James Gonsey Richard Hahn Mary Phelps Terry Rochester Donna Stayduhar John Slone Bill Winter TROMBONES Beverly Byrnes Jerrell Chapman Robert Deckard Kathy Harsh Neil Lampe Michael Lasiter Jeseph Merkeibach David Moerlien Larry Reader Terry Van Kenneth Wiltrout Larry W ise ALTO SAXOPHONE Donna Crook Karen Dannenberg Barry Freedman Bob Fry Richard Harper Sandy Mathews Barbara Robinson Marilyn Shepherd CONTRA BASS CLARINET Judy Grant Charles Milhouser Jo Pierce STRING BASS Bill Ebrecht Bill Frey Judy Matras BASSOON Sarah Baumberger Charlotte Mathis Johanna Pashoff OBOES Kathy Darner Lynette Petish Donna West BARITONE SAX David Gruen Harold McDonald DRUM MAJOR Terry Van TENOR SAXOPHONE Larry Dillard Barbara Kendall Nancy Laymon Donna Shands Marcella Wiezer BASS CLARINET Alice Jackson Cathy Jones James Karandjelf David McSpadden Larry Moore BASS Ronald Boyer David Morris Mike Rousseau Jim Ricker John Slotta BARITONES Brenda Hart Richard Miller Clark Niepert Kent Potillo Jud Travis PERCUSSION David Bourbon Vincent Debevc Joyce Elmore Judy Hamilton Sandra ' Kempfer Bill Niepert Don Padgett Michael Sigite Joy Strotheide Ken Talley Joe W iezer Row 1, Left to Right: T. It won 22 and lost 6 on the affirmative. A few of the ones they won were St. Louis University, Augustana College, State tournaments, and the Evanston tournament. The team has lost four of its varsity debators this year. They are: Robert Butler, John Miller, Carl Johnson, and John Spudich. Debate is sponsored by Miss Blackburn. National Honor Society David Toth, Charlotte Crippen, Carolyn McRaven, John Spudich One of the highest honors achieved by a high school student is membership in the National Honor Society. To be accepted, the society re- quires evidence of excellent character, a “B” average, and outstanding leadership and service. The society symbol, the torch of learning, has been held high at Granite since the founding of the organization in 1952. The Granite High Chapter, led by John Spud- ich, President, meets once a month. National Honor Society does not sponsor any projects of its own, but supports all those undertaken by others. Yearbook Staff Each year Mr. Johnson sponsors an organization which tries to produce a book that will aid each student in remembering his or her high school days. The organization has been under his leadership since 1958. The staff has found yearbooks in their library which date back to the 1920’s. A year- book is something no school should be without. The staff has worked harder than ever to make this “the” Yearbook to remember. The Warrior is staffed by Advisor, Mr. Johnson; Editor, Mike Voorhees; Assistant-editor, Larry Wortham, Business Manager, Beth Wood; and Photog- raphy editor, Pat Kadanec. 104 Row 1, Left to Right: Bar- bara Decker, Roberta Long, Georgia Crawford. Our trainer is Kenneth Huber, a top senior, who devotes many, many hours of his own time to keeping our athletes in shape, thus helping to make “WARRIOR ' victories possible. Kenny assisted Mr. Lewis, when he was the school’s full time trainer before taking over the post of head football coach last year. With Mr. Lewis’s resignation as trainer, Kenny took over the burden of the job. He has earned the respect of all our school’s athletes because of the services he renders to them. The training room offers many services to our athletes. Anything from having your ankles taped to prevent spraining them, to a whirl-pool bath to cure pulled muscles. This room is a familiar place to the many boys who use its services. But it is more than just a room, it is a small, compact doctor’s office with old “Doc.” Huber in attendance. To an athlete, his feet are just about the most important part of his body. But to treat each boy’s feet separately would be a never-ending job. That is why a foot-powder box is provided just out- side the training room. On this you may sit and apply tough-skin, a liquid to stop blisters, and foot powder. This is an important asset to all boys connected with sports. Yes, Granite City is privileged, indeed, to have a training room and the services of Kenny Huber. Together they help to make Granite’s sports what they are today. In the future, we only hope some- one as competent as Kenny will take over his responsibilities. The Prom is an annual event that makes an ordinary night into the ball everyone dreams of attending. The candle light shows the shadows of manv figures passing by talking to everyone they meet. The Prom is usually set for November. There is a committee to do most of the planning. The com- mittee decides upon the band and selects a theme. This year the theme was “Arabian Nights.” About two hundred couples danced to the music of the Newports, who played in front of a tent of yellow silk. In the background was a beautiful mural displaying an Arabian scene of a man on a flying carpet. The success of the Prom was largely due to the work of Jim Proffitt, Jim Cant, Lloyd Summers, and Mary Lewis, members of the committee. We wanted this book to be the best ever produced. We would like to take this opportunity to express sincere thanks and gratitude for the cooperation the staff gave us.
