The painter spent long and tedious hours in an attempt to capture the loyalty, gratitude, and spirit of the student body of Granite City Senior High School. Although we cannot properly express these emotions in pictures or words, we would like to present the background activities responsible for them, which are the athletic events, social gatherings, clubs, and classroom activities of our school. 2 9 K tadtuctia (Smo£e Siptuild) 2 4cC4HtHcd6uitcd i ( 7it kU SCcCend-) 9 ' paeutCef (gAte d) 75 Setuaxd (Ti awti id) 25 Zi uCencladd Hen (“Pa zaaded) 67 s4etto4tied ' (Pacu 7(7 acu) 93 s4t£letccd (76 vt P t6) 725 0 7a 7e @o tte ttd 7 e 2uee t 4 ' pCoat 76e ' gettevclte une JSflPBfcWI WIWMIW! Dr. Kaiser has been a teacher, principal, and administrator for 17 years. A native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Dr. Kaiser graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis. He was a Navy officer in the South Pacific, Canada, and the United States in 1943 1945. In 1939 he received his Bachelor of Science from Southeast Missouri State College. He acquired his Masters degree from the University of Missouri and received his Doctorate in the University of Chicago. Members of the Board of Education are: Presi- dent, Mr. Homer Huber, Secretary, Mr. Robert Ed- monds, Mr. Glenn Abenroth, Mr. Herbert Bischoff, Mr. Howard Kaseberg, Mr. Cameron VanBuskirk, Mr. Harry R. Ward, Jr. The Board is elected by the people of Granite City. They are elected to direct the school business and see that the schools of Granite City are operated and maintained in the most efficient man- ner possible. When it is found necessary to build new schools, the Board presents a Bond Issue to the residents of this community. They in turn vote on the Bond Issue. Thus far, there has never been a Bond Issue that has failed to pass. The regular meetings of the Board of Education are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. 1st ROW: Mr. Edmonds, Mr. Huber, Dr. Kaiser. 2nd ROW: Mr. Ward, Mr. Abenroth, Mr. Van Buskirk, Mr. Kaseburg, and Mr. Bischoff. We are, indeed, honored to have as our High School principal, Mr. Lawrence C. McCauley. A man of great am- bition, he is always trying to find new ways and methods to make our school a better place to attend. Before becom- ing principal, he served as a very capable teacher and coach. He has actively participated in many of our Civic and Community organizations and is dedicated to the principle of good citizenship. Gladly would he learn and gladly would he teach appears to be the verse inscribed on each teacher ' s heart at Granite City High School. They not only give willingly of their time and en- ergy during school hours, but also numerous times after school at plays, concerts, athletics, and other extracurricular activities. Several members of the faculty, after having taught for many years, return to college not only to enable them to teach the students better, but also to obtain a clearer, less prejudiced view of the world. They have given graciously of their time and energy to participate in band, athletics, drama, art, vocal music, and the many other ac- tivities without which our school would not be complete. The seniors were dedicated to the high ideals and principles of the school and community, which have added to their character as seniors and as young citizens of our nation. CLASS OFFICERS . . . GLORIA WORTHEN Se Uo% With gratitude dear Granite High we will al- ways think of thee . . The words of our Alma Mater bring pleasing memories to the June Class of 1959. For three wonderful years the June ' 59 Class waited with anticipation for the day when they would assume the role of Seniors. Now as gradu- ation draws near, their senior year is over and they have only pleasant memories. They remem- ber with mingled pride and envy the choosing of their classmates as members and leaders in athletic events, student government. National Honor Society, publications and artistic endeavors such as speech, music , and art. As upperclassmen, they have shown warmth and integrity in welcoming those who were new to high school life, and they realize that the long climb to reach senior status has been a worthy goal, one that has brought with it a sense of satisfaction and happiness. Finally the day has come for the recognition of our past efforts. The long chain with another link added is being given to the approaching Senior Class. Some are reluctant, others are anticipating leaving our Alma Mater, but we can all certainly be proud of this class . . . the Class of June 1959. The High School Band has played at all football, basketball, assemblies, and plays. Our Band always takes its annual band tour in the Spring. While on the tour, they will play at three of the finest schools in the U S. In order to take this band tour, the Band Parents Club, with the help of the band personnel, must raise money. The Band, as in the past, gave four winter concerts with other bands from this area participating. On their first concert, the Nameoki elementary band with Miss Elsie Maylath as director, were guests. On the next two concerts, the Central Band under the direction of Mr. Frank Meyer played. Last of all, the Coolidge Jr. High Band under the direction of Mr. Robert D. Todoroff played. 96 D. Routh, C. Johnson, C. Lexow, J. Moerlien, F. Arbeiter, N. Ingram, D. Boyd, C. Bischoff, N. The squad again tackled a traditionally difficult schedule, meet- ing Vandalia, Normandy, Roxana, Woodriver, Missouri School for Blind, Quincy, Jacksonville, Lamphier, Ritenour, Evanston, and Waukegan. The team was led on the mats by Co-Captains George Nemeth and Mike Trgovich. Although hampered by the graduation of Marvin Meng and the injuries sus- tained by several of the grapplers. Coach Schmitt has been able to remedy this by shifting his men into various weight groups so as to produce a winning combination.
