LIFE AT GRANITE CITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Si H imtiimtiiHU ' nmrmr- The warmth and companionship of friendly faces . . . the boisterous commotion of crowded halls . . . the thud of books hastily thrown into bulging lockers . . . the reluctant acceptance of endless homework, drills, rehearsals . . . determined minds set on scholastic achievement ... the sportsmanship and spirit of earnest competition ... all these are life at Granite High. A few scholars and hundreds of average, wholesome teenage students form the mul- titude swarming in the halls of G. anite. From the maintenance man to the concertmaster in the school band, every individual shares not only the responsibilities but also the lighthearted pleasures of time well spent. Good minds and earnest attitudes help in achieving success. While one person spends hours drawing posters, another charges down the football field in hope of a touchdown. As one coaches, another teaches; as one wrestles, another sews; as one composes, one debates — all faithful to the traditions of high merit, achievement, and friendly harmony at GCHS. 3 4 ■ ' • LEARNING . .. GROWING 7 9 Mfl Through observation and investigation the Warrior staff gains an interesting picture of student activity in the halls of our high school. That picture is recreated within these pages. This assignment involves many hours of work, but the pleasure of such a large task lies in the fact that we have been part of a rewarding experience. The staff of the 1958 Warrior proudly presents a view of life at Granite City Sen- ior High School. TABLE OF CONTENTS For twenty-five years Paul A. Whether they were applying time and advice in producing a play, pageant, show or game, or giving friendly support from the sidelines, teachers were on hand every school day and many nights. Our teachers at Granite High have an ac- tive interest in their students and will- ingly assist, counsel, and encourage each student. The associations between students and faculty will long be remembered, and the friendships made here will be our most cherished memories of high school days. EUGENE AI ASSI Art Art Club. They remember mingled pride and envy as their classmates were chosen as members and leaders in athletic events, student government. National Honor Society, publica- tions, and artistic endeavors such as speech, music, and painting. As underclassmen, they looked forward to their last year when they would achieve seniority in the high school. As upperclassmen, they showed warmth and intelligence in welcoming those who were new to high school life. As seniors they shared duties and re- sponsibilities which were theirs as participants in many school activities. This class stands united, firm, and proud that they too have played their role in the ever- changing pictures of high school life. As seniors, students realize that the long climb to reach senior status has been a worthy goal, one that brought with it a sense of satisfac- tion and a large share of happiness. SENIOR CLASS JUNIORS Ever looking forward to their senior year, the junior class kept busy partici- pating in athletic events, working on publications, and enjoying school. The highlights of their year were the annual junior prom and boat excursion. Every member of the class worked diligently to make these events outstanding and mem- orable. This year has shown that there are many outstanding individuals in the junior class who both eagerly and effi- ciently have maintained the honorable traditions of Granite High. As juniors these students began to realize that the life of an upperclassman is filled with responsibilities and study as well as fun. The top Sophomores’ skit, “Finals Are Fun,” won first place. Awards for the annual cake baking contest were also pre- sented. On Wednesday there was a pep parade, the winning car being decorated with clouds to represent heaven. The parade proceeded through downtown streets in Granite City and concluded with a pep rally at the high school football field. The defeat of Pana, 33-0, in our home- coming game on Thursday evening really placed all Granite City High School students in “high heaven.” The dance following the game was enjoyed by many. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Beggar On Horseback, a comedy-murder play, was presented by the Speech Department. The crown- ing of the harvest queen brought the week to a dramatic climax. The band does much to stimulate school spirit at football and basketball games. The two assembly programs given this year were enjoyed a great deal by the student body. The band also played at graduation and bacca- laureate services. Four cor ' erts were presented dur- ing the school year. Soloists at the first concert were Bruce Meek, Robert Ruckrigel, and Barbara Allen. Members of the school choral groups sang at the second concert. The Coolidge Junior High School band members were guests at the third concert, and the elementary school band played at the final con- cert. The band took its annual tour in the spring and presented concerts at two high schools. Louis Meek, Director 92 BAND Band Personnel ROW 1: B. Allen, B. Misselhom, L. Niepert, V. Travis, A. Carney, P. Warren Simpkins, Director VOCAL MUSIC The Granite City Senior High School choral music groups, under the direction of Mr. Warren Simpkins, presented many fine programs and won a large audience. These groups work to improve the voice and performance of the members and to teach them to appreciate music. During this past season, students sang at the Rotary Club, Elks, P.T.A meetings, graduation and baccalaureate services. On Saturday, May 10, Mr. Simpkins accompanied a se- lected group to Highland, Illinois, for the annual high school choral festival. A group went to the Jefferson Hotel in St. Louis to sing for the Illinois Business Education Association. The a cappella choir sang on “Coffee Break,” a KTVI program on November 13, and the following day on “Look, Listen, and Learn,” which was presented over KWK. A highlight of the season was the operetta given March 27 and 28. On Friday, April 18, members of the vocal depart- ment left for Chicago. They presented a program at Villa Grove High School. Gorgeous gowns, a beautiful stage setting, and an appreciative audience made May Day 1957 a fabulously lovely pageant. The throne, decorated with silver and gold, could not have been more appropriate for a queen to occupy. The groups of performers, the high school band, and the master of ceremonies seemed well prepared for their approaching responsibilities. “All in the Abstract,” a colorful, modernistic pro- gram, was presented by the Physical Education De- partment in a series of routines introduced by the two artists on their easels. The traditional May pole dance broke the magic spell that had been so skillfully woven. The crowning of the 1957 May Queen brought the evening to a dra- matic climax. 100 ROW 1: K. Okai, B. One of the most helpful groups at Granite High is the Junior Red Cross Council, an organization sponsored by Mrs. Edna Haun. Many projects were undertaken by the club during this past year. Students sent 100 joke books to the hospitalized at Scott Air Force Base and provided articles for a Halloween party. At Christ- mas time, slipper socks for men and pixie socks for women were sent to the Madison Nursing Home. More recreational equip- ment was also sent to Scott Air Force Base. Council members decorated the Christmas tree at the local office during the holidays. They also helped in the membership drive. Pep personified are the members of the Granite City cheerleading squad. The fifteen girls that form the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads find that the job of being a cheerleader is not all glamour. Hours of practice go into the perfection of just on cheer so that it may be presented at a Pep Assembly. But the cheerleaders receive their reward from the satisfaction that they have con- tributed to the morale of the team and the enthusiasm aroused in the fans. Although hampered by grad- uation, Coach Schmitt has plugged the gap well by shifting his men into the various weight groups to give a winning combination. Those boys who went to state in 1957 and returned for the 1958 season were Captains George Nemeth and Pat Cline, Gordon Hunter, Mike Trgovich, and Tom Sparks. Hampered heavily by the loss of the first five due to graduation, Coach Dick Harmon put together an in- experienced and extremely short team. Highlights of the season included the victory over Alton, 66-61, in an overtime period. The vic- tory required sharp shooting from the field and the free throw line as well as good floor performance. A much acclaimed victory was given the War- riors after defeadng the tall University City Indians, who were considered one of the best teams in the Leonard Lybarger Mercie Mendoza state of Missouri. Another important win was over Edwardsville. In an overtime period the Warrior sophomore, Carl Wortham, shot the winning basket fpr a final score of 66-64. Richard Williams, a sophomore and transfer stu- dent from Madison, lead the Southwestern confer- ence in point scoring with a 12-game total of 262 points for an average of 21.8 points per game. Unbeaten in dual and triangular meets, for the first time the Warriors won the coveted Southwestern Conference Relays. The Warriors outpointed East St. Louis, the champions for ten succes- sive years. Showing their power to the St. Louis area teams, the track squad won the Maplewood Relays, coming from behind to beat favored Principia Academy. At the Normal Illinois Relays, the Granite squad placed third among the top 80 track teams in the state.
