Thirty-three Warriors earned awards in varsity football with a record of three wins, one tie and five losses which was a one-game improvement over the 1 955 season. 1 he football squad was still inexperienced with five first-year seniors being used at various times in the starting lineup. The team was exceptionally light with the line averaging 157 pounds and the backfield, 169. Unforgettable plays by this year’s team were the 85-yard touchdown run of Harry Basan against East St. Louis and the interception by the Alton team of a lateral pass which was turned into an 80-yard touchdown against Granite City Warriors. During the season Sheridan Dutchik earned the honor of being named one of the outstanding ends of the year. Boys who played regularly were Jim Meng, Gene Davis, Gary Crane, Jim Bledsoe, Norman Grote, Jerry Wilson, Eddie Jackson, and Jim O’Master. The coaches assisting Keith Parker were A1 Lewis, Joseph Fedora, Jack Rich- ardson, Richard Yates, William Schmitt, and Glenn Rice. J. Linhart, D. SJate H. Hasan D. BAStBALL The Warrior Baseball nine enjoyed another successful season on the diamond posting nineteen victories, one tie and six losses. The season began with the un- happy prospects of only three regulars returning from last year’s champion team; however, hard work and determination by the players forged a nine that rated with the best in Illinois prep circles. Seniors Bill Diak, Ron Parker, Dalian Maxvill, John Boyer, and Iran Cohen were inspirational leaders for the team and led the nine in defense and offense. Bill Diak and Ron Parker were co-captains while Dalian Maxvill was chosen the most valuable player. Driving in twenty-one runs, Bill Diak was the best clutch hitter; and Ron Parker closed his high school pitching career winning six games, including a no-hitter. After being transferred from catcher to pitcher and turning in a record of six wins without a loss, sophomore Richard Wade was chosen the most improved player on the 1956 squad. J. Toncoff. A. Homecoming, our most festive occa- sion, was celebrated with many activi- ties at Granite High. The theme this year was centered around the Interna- tional Olympics. At Monday’s assem- bly the guest speaker was Bob Ingham, a sports newscaster. On Tuesday the classes presented skits honoring the coaching staff of our athletic depart- ment. One of the best parades of the year moved through Granite City streets Wednesday evening and ended at the football field with a pep rally. Thurs- day evening’s activity was a football game, the outcome of which was a Warrior victory in the contest between our squad and the Belleville Maroons. A dance was held after the game cele- brating the victory. Immediately after the presentation of the play, Time Out For Ginger, on Friday evening, the climax of the week’s activities was reached by the crowning of Betty Hoffman as the 1956 Harvest Queen. Dowd ever wanted to be. Naturally, everyone thinks Elwood is insane to believe in the existence of an in- visible, talking rabbit, but by some twist of fate Elwood proves his sanity. Although the audience never actually sees the rabbit, it is made to feel that Harvey exists. This delightful play was under the direction of Miss Mary Blackburn. APPLYING THE FINISHING TOUCHES — R.
