As the child is taught, so grows the man. Because this is true, one of the most hon- ored professions today is teaching. Teachers are entrusted with America’s greatest natural resources — her youth. In Granite High we have been fortunate to have Miss Blackburn, Miss Felter, Mr. Frohardt, Mrs. Heumann, Miss Luther, and Miss Sewing directing and counseling hundreds of students. For thirty years students have passed through the classrooms of these teachers and emerged a little wiser, a little better prepared to meet the responsibilities of life. Because we, the students past and present, of Granite High, are grateful to these teachers, we dedicate to them this 1956 Warrior Yearbook. Mary Blackburn FOREWORD I, Chief Granawah, welcome you to the ' 56 Warrior which has been especially created for you by this year ' s staff Its pages repre- sent many hours of hard work and concentration. The labors of the staff were performed willingly in the hope that you might receive happiness and pleasu re from this yearbook in the years to come. It was their fervent desire to capture and preserve your activities and experiences of this year. They could have done nothing, however, without the excellent co-operation received Irom administration, faculty, and student body. Therefore, on behalf of the 1956 W arrior Stall, thank you all. This is your book. May it give you as much joy as it gives the staff to present it to you. WITHIN THESE PAGES . . . One of the most influential groups in keeping our school spirit high has been the Cheerleaders. They are a familiar sight during football and basketball seasons — always ready to cheer the team on to victory or keep up their spirits in time of defeat. No game would be quite complete without them. This year Marcella Schubert was the very able Captain of the Granite High Cheerleaders and Miss Lois Johnson was the sponsor. ROW 1: M. Lybarger, J. Students coached by Miss Mary Blackburn attended speech contests and festivals at Southern Illinois University, Washington University, and University of Illinois. Several students participat- ed in the Voice of Democracy Contest sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Each year the department is in charge of homecoming with the advanced students choosing the theme, writ- ing and directing class skits, decorating the halls, and presenting a play. Also each spring they give a Variety Show which features songs, dances, and original skits. The Speech Department is indeed a welcome and pleasant portion of Granite High. 1 10 Come to Speechsters and Debaters The Granite City High School Debate team met with great success in the 1955-56 season. In each meet attended, the debaters placed either first or second. At the Augustana College debate tournament, the largest in Illinois, held at Rock Island, Illinois for 39 high schools, Granite City won top honors taking 11 of 12 debates. Granite High’s team also competed in the Southern Illinois University tournament where two members of the team, Jo Barylske and Roger Gruen, were award- ed scholarships. The team was led by Co-captains Roger Gruen and Lucian Dressel. The officers of the De- bate Club were President. Roger Gruen. Vice- President, Jerry Hamlett, Secretary, Jo Barylske. The debate sponsor was Miss Mary Blackburn. DEBATE — R. Gruen. A. Wolff. E. Brulon. J. Barylske, G. Eber- hardt. L. Dressel. J. Hamletl. ROW 1: P. Trachsel. N. Shelton. R. Meyer, J. Lanahan. R. Masque and Gavel Honors Speech Students Its purpose high, that is why it is Masque and Gavel” — these words are part of the song so familiar to every member of this honorary speech organization. All year these students work hard planning programs, presenting plays, and partici- pating in contests and in the spring are rewarded with a trip — this year to New Orleans. All top juniors who have been in speech for one year are eligible to become members. The students pledge to re- spect the opinions of others, to think intelligently and judge fairly, to maintain an interest in the welfare of others, and probably most important to uphold and promote the prin- ciples of good speech. The Granite City Chapter is fortunate to have as one of its sponsors Miss Mary Blackburn, the National President of Masque and Gavel. She is assisted by Miss Mary Luther. OFFICERS— N. There was a low hum of conversation from the students assembled on the stage. Suddenly they became quiet. A man walked out. bowed to the audience, and turned to face the students. He raised his hands slightly and they rose. The fifth annual Vocal Music Christmas Con- cert was beginning. This concert has become almost traditional at Granite High. The students under the direction of Mr. Warren Simpkins work hard many weeks in advance preparing for it. This, however, is not their only activity. Throughout the year the various groups sing at I TA meetings, baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies, the annual spring concert, various Granite City clubs, and in addition, each year they present an operetta. The highest honor bestowed upon any student of Granite City High School is membership in the Granite City Chapter of the National Honor Society. This chap- ter has been in existence since 1952. Eligibility to this society is based upon character, scholarship, leadership, and service. During the year 5 per cent of each junior class and 15 per cent of each senior class is elected to membership. In considering candidates for memb ership, those making selections check first on scholarship. An average of not less than a B must be attained by the candidate. Admission to the National Honor Society is then determined by the character, leadership, and service of the candidate. Mr. William Schmitt. This organization also sought to emphasize the importance of worthy home membership and furthered interest in home economics. With the guidance of Miss Daisy Pick, F.H.A. members were busy making stuffed toys for the Christ- mas baskets and bringing gifts for a colony of children at Jacksonville. The most outstanding project of the year was the presentation of the United Nations flag to the school to promote international goodwill. Homecoming is a week of fun and excitement that is made possible by the hard work of Miss Mary Blackburn and the Speech Department. They begin in early fall to make preparations for the big week. On Wednesday and Thursday nights the play “Seventeen” was presented by the Speech Department. This comedy dealt with the problems of a seventeen year old boy who had fallen in love for the first time. Specialty numbers were presented and attendance prizes were awarded.
