QVIYTCIIJHV FOREWORD . . . Granite City is our home town, We are proud of it and in the pages which follow we hope to acquaint you with it. Our presentation, necessarily brief because of page limitation, has forced us to omit many religious, cultural, social, and industrial facts of interest. Cogni- zant of these limitations in presenting our community through the pages of the Warrior of '54, we are happy to extend to all our readers a personal invitation to visit our community, ,, :Zia nun ,wmv maps- -'QWHTI5 ' V .er--vw. we aw id We are quite proud to have become known as a neighborly town and humbly predict that in the near future, our fair city of Granite City, will advance even more rapidly than in the past. Good city government, reliable county officials, and your cooperation, will make Granite City really great. PR UDLY HIEF GRA l'WAH I VITES 721-rink 9 lt Vu VISIT , 1 ll l 'Q . i 1. Last year the track team was undefeated in eight dual track meets. They were the Southwest Conference Champions of l953. There is a team consisting of Freshmen and Sophomores and a Varsity Team consisting of Juniors and Seniors. All together there are about one- hundred boys out this year. Getting in condition early in the season is an advantage our team pos- sesses over other schools. Four days a week is dedicated to work out. In March it will be increased to five days. The Speech Department under the direction of Miss Mary Blackburn and Mr, George Demos has a very active program. Students from all classes take part, The freshmen who so desire may enroll in Childrens Theater, and if they show talent and interest, may continue in the advanced classes. All academic students take speech or English 5 in their junior year. ln the fall of the year the advanced speech department chooses a play to be given on l-lomecoming week, After the play has been cast, each class in the department gives a skit in the play. ln addition to this, they make posters, sell tickets, and reserve them. Another part is class skits which are written and directed by students from Masque and Gavel. After the Homecoming play, the department starts a unit on interpre- tation, This consists of cuttings from books and plays, They also may give orations, original orations, extemporaneous speaking, verse reading, debate, and radio. The best from each field are chosen and are entered in contests with other schools and in our district speech contest. lf they win, they go on to the sectional and State contests. The speech honor society is Masque and Gavel. To be eligible you must be a top junior. Then your name is sent to the teachers you had the last two semesters and they vote on your oral work in class. Finally candidates must be accepted by the members. Masque and C-avel takes a trip in the spring to a place which the members choose and the speech department stands most of the expenses of the trip.
