Spelling tests-with toughies like Wednesday and opera -were the bane of our existence, but daily story-sessions on NIL Popperis Penguins made up for almost any painful learning. Twenty-two Fourth Grade-Oh, lucky, lucky us! WVe had homework for the first time. We also learned to use pen and ink-a very messy process-and to identify birds in our Audubon Club meetings. The girls chose sides for the Campfire Girls and the Girl Scouts, and the rest of the class chose for the murderous game of Red Roverf, Fifth Grade-The Friday Frolic Club was the center of our social life. Spelldowns, geography lessons, and School of the Air classes over WOSU kept us busy when we werenit making water colors of common wildflowers in Ohio. After school hours we took to the wheels and skated on all the smooth sidewalks in Grandview. Sixth Grade--Our dramatic talents came out in Brave Lord Lovel, Christopher Columbusf, and Robin Hoodf, At the Stevenson school, the Grandview Grease Collectors Clubii aided the war effort but the Gay Gremlinsn at Edison just hid fun. Our favorite sport at recess was jump the brooki' with three deepv running a close second. Most of the boys were sporting Scout uni- forms and planning summers at Camp Lazarus. Seventh Grade- just like the high school kids we changed classes, had regular study halls, came to high school assemblies, and got to vote for Old Fat Neckf' The change from rhythmics to gym was a big event in our lives. We all learned to ride horseback and to take bike hikes up along the river-for picnics. ' Eighth Grade-We spent our school time memorizing cabinet officers' names, learning Indian leg- ends, and practicing first aid, but this was definitely second to our outside activities. We went to the games every Friday and the show every Sunday, planned the V-3 dances, and organized the Eta Bita Pie and Amie Clubs. We enjoye.l the big assemblies-a swing assembly with Don Crawford and an Armistic Day assembly with Roger Youngf' Freshman Year-Within two weeks we learned to act superior toward the little kids,', our former junior high friends, and to be properly respectful toward those impressive mighty seniors. The boys went out for reserve football and the girls for hockey-equally brutal sports. The mys- teries of Latin conjugations and algebra problems filled our evenings. We went to the Fresh- man-Sophomore Party and dreamed of the Booster Dance. Sophomore Year-From late summer on, the girls practiced the hitchkick and the Grandview reg- ular looking toward those fateful cheerleader tryouts. We went to spreads, joined the Y-Teens, and let down our skirts to get that New Look. The girls thought that the boys didnit get around very much and the boys didnit care-they were busy with their own important affairs and spent much of their time turning down girls humbly asking them for dates. junior Year-What wheels we were-blowing up hydrogen generators, spouting whole sentences in French Cfentre dans la . . .Q and even earning our drivers licenses. Everyone, except those dratted seniors, and they'd be leaving soon, thought that we were so grown-up and enviable. We shared the illusion, and wasnit it fun? Even our class play Spring Fever fitted in with the madcap junior so Hightyw mood. Senior Year-We returned from wonderful summers at camp or work, planning to show this school a thing or two. Civics, bookkeeping, and Macbeth dampened our spirits only slightly as we tore around busily running the school-ragged. We cheered ourselves hoarse for our C. B. L. champs, uohedv and whistled at Homecoming, worked ourselves blue over the Booster Dance and Tal- ent Show, and struggled through stacks of college applications. VVe laughed when they told us weid keep getting busier and busier but they were right. Y w vi f f f' Q U CQ. paapfzecq What a difference ten years make,', we thought as we landed at the glittering spaceport on the outskirts of Grandview to gather for the class reunion. VVe were all especially eager to see the long-awaited new school which had just been completed. It was really worth waiting for- escalators, chimes instead of jangling bells, and, most wonderful of all, heat in the winter Qeven on Mondaysj. But even as we heard of these wonders we felt a few qualms. Would this be the same dear, old Grandview that we had known? We started on a round of class rooms to find out. We learned a lot about Grandview but even more about ourselves. We visited Mr. Bowers' room first, of course. The General was decrying the evil purposes of radicals like our own jack White who was then running for governor on an unwrapped garbage ticket. Mr. Bowers had mellowed, however, to the extent of using a new textbook, a collection of old SUNDIAL jokes compiled by Mary Lou Adkins, Phil Hummel, and Al O'Leary. Next stop was Miss Truckmiller's room. The speech classes were watching the jon Connor Show, produced by Dirk Voelker, on the built-in television set. The set was equipped with one of jim Pearce's two-cent color converters. On the screen we saw Margie Woodruff and Bob Messer, outstanding blackface team, Barbara Benson, at last playing Peg o' My Heartf Ed Bechtel, Gene Kelly's greatest rival, and Alice Nelson, whom they still Can't Make a Lady Out Of. A musical interlude followed featuring Queenie Turley singing with One-eyed-jack Duffee and his Cards. We also learned that as a result of her fine performance in a long-ago class play, janet Shere had been appointed assistant to Edgar Ridolfo, new head of the FBI. Miss jones was extremely proud of three of her ,50 graduates. Shirley Wright and Barbara Holt- schulte have invented a new type of short hand, while Betty Taylor has just broken 700 in typing. Going to the music department, we heard that Peggy lieigel has organized a chorus to compete with Fred Waring and that Mardell Boyce and her Crooning Clarinet have made Spitalny's Or- chestra. We also noticed posters advertising jim Butler's and Mark Yates' concerts at the new civic center, designed and built by the Amicon Destruction Company. We learned from Mr. Barcus that only one of our friends had achieved distinction in the field of mathematics. This is Donn Manger who has devised an un-fiunkable basic math test. And maybe Sue Fodor could be considered a multiplication Whiz, she had just become the mother of sextuplets. In the home economics department, we found out that Ioanne Shilling and Patty Runkle, work- ing in Dorothy Ebright's Pastry Place, have invented a new dessert, cinnamon pineapple popovers. Rosemary Amicon is now running a restaurant specializing in square spaghetti. joann Neff is cashier at the restaurant and joan Hunter is chief chef. Dorothy Fauber and Charlene Slade are heading the needle-and-thread department of Molly Williams and Nanci Campbell's high-style designing firm. Peggy DePaso and Pauline Abhruzzese are modeling petite fashions for them. Eighty Mary Lou McIntyre and Lila Voeller are home appliance demonstrators for the firm of Keener and Morgan. Mrs. Mallett and the other English teachers are very greatly pleased with their ex-students who have made quite a mark on the literary world. Jody Westlake's Etiquette Handbook is running to a dozen copies, while Russell Omohundrds Texas Jack adventure stories are even more successful. Tom Wheeler and Jim Millisor are cameramen for Clarkson Bitzer's revived Police Gazette, and Peggy Purkey is foreign correspondent for the American Field Hockey Association. Miss Peterson informed us that Joanne Gardner is now Professor of Ping Pong at Sitona Tech. Butch,' and Jean Hermsen, who took up golf last spring, recently racked up an overwhelming vic- tory over Babe Didrichson Zaharias and Marlene Bauer. Connie Olhoff is now the only girl play- ing with the Montreal Maple Leaves. Pete also mentioned that Ming Macy, Janet Todd, and Helen Reed are still going to school, working for their million point letters. Head football coach Terry Smith, who is rumored about to sign a twenty year contract with Ohio State, gave us more inside information about our classmates. He said that Dick Bisciotti is now finshing his tenth year as star for CCNY. Four of our athletes have already retired-Alan Jones after winning the Tam O'Shanter and Ed Linsley, Bill Lawrence, and Chester Fowler after spending a few years in big league baseball. The fellas are now organizing a horseshoe tournament on the playground below the hill. The science department is in an uproar over Byron Thompson and Ray Neher's theory that the Law of Gravity doesn't really work. They say it just looks that way. Another pair of scientific researchers, Dale Lathouse and Jack Bergin, have discovered the one hundred fiftieth element which they have named Cornetetium. B Bill Bring 'Em Back Half-Dead Chandler is furnishing Mr. Davis' biology classes with raw material. Hap is now a wild-alligator hunter in Central Florida. Mrs. Lambert's prize protege, Pete Rogers, is now doing independent work on Roman toga manufacturing. Many of the students have gone on to gain fame from their activities as well as their class room interests. Don Steffe is now president of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Boys' Chorus Lines in the Talent Show. Bev Greer has opened a rest home for ex-Y-Teen presi- dents. Marilyn Morris, Barbara Holub, and Margie Mathias, cosmetic artists, have devised a new make-up using no lipstick, no powder, no eyeshadow-just a big purple blotch on the nose. Barry Steigely is now leading the West First Avenue branch of the Civil Air Patrol. Mary Ann Shoemaker and Nancy Lemley have started the Cozy Corner Companion Club to insure no more stags for Booster Dances. Nancy Mercer has just been elected Mrs. America. Jackie Evilsizor and Pat Riley have opened a company to manufacture brain-superchargers for scholarship teams. On our trip up to the River Cfor a picnic, of coursej we ran into Don Forst who is now cap- tain of the City of Columbus excursion boat. As we gazed about we saw Jan Fosnaugh, famed haunted house hunter, eating her breakfast of Ghost Toasties and Shrouded Wheat. We were sorry that Joanna Lawyer wasnit able to be with us at the picnic as she was taking her drivers test. Then, just as we rolled out the root beer, Louise Ewing came cantering down the path with her great horse Mugwump, singing a duet from Maryland, My Maryland. The Bobcats won their first foot- ball game of the year at Dayton Fairmont. 1949-1950 class officers were elected. First Booster Assembly-South game records our second win. Campaigning, cheering, and on with the Booster officer elections. Al to-the-end Lane received the honored title of president. The football team honored their mothers at the Delaware game. The Bexley game brought another victory to our school. The first Laders Club luncheon of the year featured the election of the officers. The team fathers cheered our team on to victory at the Dayton Stivers' game. Molly VVil1iams was crowned queen at the annual Homecoming Assembly and reigned at the Grandview-St. Charles game. Grandview rootcrs trekked to Mt. Vernon to see the Bobcats win another one. Our war veterans were honored at the Greenfield game. Arlington and Grandview battled to an exciting 6-6 tie to become co-champions of the C.B.L. A football banquet was given for our C.B.L. co-chainps. Ralph Guglielmi was elected football captain for '50. Dear Ruthu was presented by the junior class. School was closed for-mmml Thanksgiving. School was dismissed for Christmas vacation with a musical Christmas Assembly directed hy Mrs. Scott and Mr. Byrnes. Memory Lane was traveled by many happy couples and a good time was had by all. The Band Skating Party was held at Rollerland. The annual Hi-Y Dance was held in ye olde gymef' Twenty-seven seniors took the Senior Scholarship Test. Joanna Lawyer placed Hrst in the city, third in the state among the girls. The Band Card Party was held amid prizes and refreshments galore. VVashington pulled through-but what happened to Lincoln? William Hacker impressed us favorably with a program of piano music. Mr. Hacker was a student of jose Iturhi. Cherry Time Twirli' headed the posters for the F reshman-Sophomore dance. The seniors presented a scintillating play- You Can't Take It With You. Green and new Varsity G','s decorated Grandview on St. Patrick's Day following a letter-award assembly. Silence is golden, and the voice is powerful, is the philosophy of Otto Schacht, lecturer and singer. Opening night for the Talent Show. Applause and more applause put the finishing touch on the Talent Show, Let Hearts Be Trumpf' It was truly a great show. The P. T. A. held its second open house 'in the high school. Easter vacation gave us a five day rest from school-but who took advantage of it? The Bobcat Boosters sponsored an Athletic Festival in the high school gymnasium. Seven seniors were honored at the Annual Band Banquet. Grandview gymnasium was the scene of the Kiwanis Sport Dance. With books closed and pencils poised, we worked diligently over the final Scholarship tests. The seniors pasted their invitations to the junior-Senior Prom into well-filled scraphooks and looked forward to graduation. Our brains', lined up on the stage to receive their scholarship medals. Another queen and more than enough food drew a crowd to the Band Festival. Goodbye for a week, seniors! White attire and sparkling eyes were in style at Baccalaureate. With twelve years of knowledge well-stored in their heads, the seniors leave to learn new things that the remaining half-century may hold for them. Our past was a pleasant i-and happy time. Sheltered in friendly, comfortable Grandview or in other communities like it, we felt com- pletely loved and protected. Our little fears and worries extended only to the next Weekend, next party, or next grade cardg our goods times were almost continuous. In our present, our wonderful senior year, we are beginning to learn the meaning of maturity., We are learning that the responsibilif ties we have looked forward 'tof mean Work and defeat as well -as glory. Thoughts of the future are a little disturbing as we' Wait patiently to be out and doing thingsig yet, wel are rather reluctant to leave the school 'Where We have been so happy. ' The future? That -eternal ques- tion mark will lift each day. How well We live that future-how well we solve its problems, not just per- sonal ones, but problems of our country and of the World-will 'de- termine our defeats, our accom- plishments, our happiness.
