'f ibejicafion We, the seniors of 1947, take pride in dedicating this Highlander to the faculty of Grandview Heights High School. Our teachers, contributions to this school far out- weigh their income which is inadequate to meet pres- ent living costs. Their activities include more than the day's schedule of classes, which is a full one. After school hours, teachers assist students Who need special help With school Workg grade papers both at school and at homeg and supervise all extra-curricular activities, many of which require long hours of planning, Work, and patience. Without the valuable help of our faculty, none of the school's organizations could have operatedg and the social life which is so important in the development of our characters Would have been eliminated. So it is with sincere gratitude in our hearts that We say to our faculty- Thanks a Million! OIWQ lfUOI This has been a calendar year for the seniors from September's first assignments to June's solemn good- bys. A To tell the story of 1947 at Grandview Heights High School, the staff has used a musical theme. It has been a good year for singing a song, and We hope that the tunes used in telling our story will renew old memories as students look through this annual in fu- ture years. Mr. Blauser has faithfully served Grandview schools for twenty-one years, first as a science teacher and business manager of athletics, and then as high school principal. In April, he left to accept a position as general manager of a local business concern. During the eight years that he was principal of this school, he worked hard to perfect a well co- ordinated program for students and teachers. His influence and work will ever be engraved in the minds of Grandview students. Mr. Beery, former mathematics instructor and business manager of athletics, who has taught in Grand- view schools for thirteen years, is our new principal. Our school extends best wishes to Mr. Blauser and Mr. Beery. Q- .spwperinfencfenf W C IQOALJW Ohio State University, B. A., M. A. University of Aberdeen, Scotland As superintendent of Grandview schools, Mr. Rohleder has had a lot to do with making G. H. S. the effi- cient organization it is. In every possible way he works to adapt the school program to meet the needs of the community. As a representa- tive of the Board of Education he is the connecting link between the cit- izens of Grandview and the public school system. His friendly nature and faculty for performing his du- ties well have made him outstand- ing. Marc! offiyofwcafion Dr. Tom F. Lewisg Miss Rvhoda Sams, clerkg Mr. W. A. Our Grandview citizens are indeed fortunate in having a board of educa- tion Whose members are keenly inter- ested in providing good schools for the boys and girls of our community. Even though the members of our board are busy, they give much of their time and study to leadership and service in the development of the type of an educa- tional program which will best serve our community and its young people. Many problems confront our board in its effort to give our community ex- cellent schools. Probably one of the most difficult problems before our local board at the present time, and, too, probably the most baffling in solution, is how to secure sufficient money to in- crease the salaries of our teachers. The members of our board Well realize that outstanding schools depend upon the paying of salaries Which Will retain and attract superior teachers. Page Semen RALPH D. BEERY Ohio University, B.S. We happily filled our niche in the friendly student body and enjoyed many school activities. Gur class ad- viser, Mr. Beery, helped us in many Ways to make a proper start in our high school careers. Our outstanding social achievement of the year was the freshman-sophd more dance, March Innj, sponsored by both classes. My, what surprising changes ten years have wrought! Johnny Schambs entertained us at his pretentious estate in Alaska. Gor- don Hesson and his co-pilot, Ann Ger- lach, flew us there in a plane owned by the Walker-Knell-Ebner Aircraft Com- pany, and designed by Jack Lenhart and Lewis Lemley. Our air steward- ess, Dee DeVictor, helped to make the trip enjoyable, and the mechanics, Sil- vio Bisciotti and Charles Amicon, kept the plane running smoothly. Schambs' home was really the latest thing. Dan O'Leary drew the house plans, Virginia Young and Jackie Rudy, horticulturists, did the land- scaping, the interior decorating was done by Margaret Zeeck, Jo Ann Hey- wood, and Phyllis Long. The fire chief, Fred Greenawalt, and the firemen, Ed Mantell and Dick Peters, were always on the alert to protect the expensive home. Upon entering, the first people I saw were the wealthy widow, Dolores Mor- rison, and that famous psychiatrist, Marcia Thurness, who were gossiping. Pap Weaver was sitting in the cor- ner waiting to see what was going to happen next, and Marilyn Hoffman, the bridge expert, was teaching Mary Ellen Taggart, Pat McMillan, and Cherlie Stevens a few new tricks. After enjoying a delicious meal planned by dietitians-Marian An- drews, Jeanne Reynolds, Flo Kayumi, and Dawn Voelker-we relaxed and waited to be entertained. First on the program was a newsreel made by Frank Marzetti, the great producer, and directed by Charles Mangio, Lyle Shover, and Joe Murday. The news- reel consisted of a number of selected short subjects, the first being a sports review narrated by the well known sports writer and commentator, Tom Bateman. First in the sports parade were Dick Keitz, Navy coach, Emerson Whisner, who finally broke 60 in golf, and Sue Southard and Virginia Green, who won the National Tennis Champion- ships. A The scene shifted to Washington, D. C., for the inauguration of the first woman president, Joanne Lawyer. We laughed when we saw Chief Justice Tom Cavendish, Attorney General John Boardman, and the senators, Ed Smith and Jack Looser, calmly knit- ting ear muffs to silence future deaf- Page Forty ,jwwlf ju Mani Zmorrow ringa 77 ening blows of Bob McAdams' famous formula, Sodium and Water. Next the scene flashed to the Rossel Brothers' Clinic where they and Dr. Moser with their able assistants- Suzie Mitchell, Lee Davis, Ruth Jus- tus, JoAnn Long, and Joan Hartman- nurses, had discovered a cure for that common malady of youth, spring fever, which is caused by the amorus bug- orus. Moving from the head to the torso, the motion picture switched to Paris, Ohio, where Mademoiselle Patrice Murphe was showing the latest fash- ions designed by JoAnne Justus, Jeanne McNabb, and Emilia Zeek. These chic creations were modeled by Sally Wilhelm, Barbara Gilchrist, and Joan DePaso. The models were pho- tographed by Cristine Oppihle for Elizabeth Robinson's new magazine, Twenty-Seven. Finally We saw a newsreel on foreign affairs, which have improved in the last ten years through the ef- forts of ambassadresses Pat Sharp, Jerry Anderson, and Nanette Harper. After seeing something in celluloid, we waited to see something in the flesh -namely Herbie and the Herbiettes.,' After such extraordinary choreog- raphy we were anxious to see the night life of Alaska, so we bundled up in our minks and sables and went to Snow- ball's Night Club. What a stupendous show! We saw Clark Miller, the croonerg Jim Mclntyre, matinee idolg Monette Sawyers, thrill girl of the States, the Two Guys and a Jerk - Betty and Donna Guy and Randall Clark, and Bob Myers and his Rhythm Kings. The club was beautifully decorated by the artistic Dolores Stout. Just after we arrived at the club, Barbara Harries, JoAnn Utley, and Barbara Hoadley arrived on horseback with their cowboys. Mary Fee came with her F, G. -Foxy Grandpa. Sec- retaries-Dolores Baker, Rose Mary DeLuca, Joan Carpenter, Elaine Steg- meier, Jeanne Witter, Jeanne Weis- haupt, and Marianne Butler-left their bosses' knees to join us. They dis- cussed eligible bachelors while Pat Behmer explained the facts of life to Joan Robbins. We regretted that Ted Poulton, Bill Baumgartner, and John Ackerman couldn't be with us, but they werelon an African hunting trip. Dick Boyd, who is now head American emissary to Germany, was also unable to attend. Class reunions are wonderful! Well, dear diary, until 1967, I'll close .... Page Forty one President: Snowball. For the first time in its history, this organ- ization had probies who earned their mem- bership by giving ten hours of their time help- ing the club with such service activities as knit- ting an afghan for a veterans' hospital, making scrap-books for Childrenis Hospital, and par- ticipating in a school-wide Christmas program. Selling flowers at football games, sponsoring apple, potato, and penny days, adopting a family at Christmas, and early morning carol- ing in the halls during the week before Christ- mas were important service projects of the year. Under the able direction of Miss Dunning, the Y-Teens started the year with a candlelight recognition service in the school library. A series of speakers on good grooming spoke at the regular Thursday meetings. In March, the group participated in a style show. The Y- Teens, together with the Hi-Y members, pre- sented their traditional Easter Sunrise Service in April. Seniors: Left to right: Back row: Morrison, Green, Taggart, P. Long, J. Besides the change in date of publication from every six weeks to every three weeks, the size of the pages was in- creased and the number of pages was decreased. The Bobcat received a special honor this year when two of its staff members, Bob Hammond and Gay Wade, won recognition from the National Tuberculosis Associa- tion and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, for an editorial and a cartoon, respectively.
