Tourists come, gazing at untrapped animals, Lions leer at feeble lambs, Apes and foxes harmonize. Attractions everywhere, but nowhere. A huge hog for all to see. Animals and keepers gather there. A prison of freedom in the zoo, Captured by nets of knowledge. Locked behind leaming's bars A great piece of life is stolen. Fight to leave, Society's child, rehabilitated, hopeful. The outside beckons Back to the wild. Lyle Petersen This year's annual is dedicated to Judy Pauley, a Grand View gymnast from Manilla who was severely injured in a fall during practice in September. Judy has been an inspiration to each person at Grand View, and we pray God's blessing upon her. The poem below summarizes our feelings. Grand, Grand View None have done so gracefullyg None have soared so high. Your soul swings near to God. Your skill brings us close, too. And we who watch with awe Are captured with your poise. You lift us to a grand, grand view, And hold us hushed in prayer. Our eyes pour forth from The soul of a school. We've never seen so far before. We've never tried so high. We can be truly grand, Iudyg You taught us how to see. For in your gentle, graceful faith, We think we glimpse eternity. Ralph Speer sn- 'L--.. T' s. o gf. L., 1 -fm. 4 1. S PAA Student Political Awareness Alliance is a non-part isan organization of political science majors, but which is open to any student who wants to participate in the group's activities. The club, organized in the fall of 1974, aims to increase student awareness of their political roles as citi zens. It tries to promote open inquiry into major social and political issues and encourages greater participation in the political process. Recent activities of SPAA have included a multi- media presentation of social and political issues that plagued the nation in the 1960's, a presentation of the four Des Moines mayoral candidates at a convocation, and the co-sponsorship of Eugene McCarthy's speech at Drake University. Michelle Parker and Leroy Dixon are two members of the CBS Advisory Com- mittee. They, along with other members, helped plan various activities this year. CBS Concerned Black Students is an organization that seeks to foster an appreciation of the contributions of the Black culture. The club lends support to minority students and seeks to bring about a broader cultural awareness on the campus. Through the help of faculty moderator, A . Jane Molden, the club held several activ- ities this Past year, including a Halloween party in the women's dorm, guest speakers such as Dolph Pulliam of KCCI-TV, sponsored a convocation that high-lighted a movie on the late Dr. Martin Luther King, for Black Awareness month Cffebruaryj, and presented the Des Moines Gateway Dancers at GVC's 1976 Studenterfest. CBS welcomes anyone who wishes to promote the purposes of the group. S tudenterfest, 19 '76 This year's studenterfest was blessed by good weather, good plan- ning, good talent and good fun. One highlight of the event was a dance marathon which raised 82, 500. 00 for injured gymnast Judy Pauley. 1 sid? GVC outscored their opponents 156-154 during the season, which came to a close in the second round of the state tournament at the hands of the University of Iowa, 6-4. Denise Lantz led the team with a ,375 batting average, col- lecting 24 hits, also tops on the team. Denise was followed by Teri Sellers and Mary Jo Thola with hitting averages of . 310 and . 304 respectively. Terri Moore was the number one highlight of the year, throw- ing two no-hit gamesg one against Iowa and another against William Penn, Joyce Elder was named the outstanding player of the year for the Vikings, cracking 21 hits, including four doubles, three triples and one round tripg the only home run recorded by the womenrthis year. A sn-ong defense was the key to this year's club, along with good hitting percentages. EXCELLENT YEAR FOR GYMNAS TS The GVC gymnastics team finished an outstanding year, losing only two regular season meets, both to Southern Illinois, despite the loss of the highly talented Judy Pauley. After the regular season, the Vikings went on to place second as the regionals behind Southwest Missouri State who scored 108. 58. The GVC squad scored 105.29 points in that meet to set a new school record. Patti Fogleman set the pace for the women in the regionals, placing third in the all around, and leading the Grand View team in three of the four events. The nationals saw the Grand Viewwomen perform slightly below their capabilities, placing fourteenth in a field of twenty- four, scoring a total of 99.40 points, Coach Jacobson felt that the team was scored too low in the floor exercise and in the vaulting, causing the loss of badly needed points, After the tragic injury in September to Judy Pauley, many people felt that GVC would be lucky to finish the season. However, Grand View gymnasts have a great deal of tradition, pride, and faith in God, It required all of these factors to make their season the success it was. Viking 9 Finish As Region Xl Runners The 1976 Viking baseball team was the region Xl runner-up, being defeat- ed 7-6 in the championship game. The Vikings won the Sub-Regional tourna- ment defeating Iowa Lakes, Boone, and Fort Dodge. In the Regional tournament the Vikings came from the losers' bracket to earn a spot in the championship game. Vikings receiving tournament honors were Steve Forrester, Mark Peterson, Lance Brauer, Randy Sparland, and Tom Hoe- hamerg All-Subregional team. Tom Hoehamer was then selected to the first team All Region XI team as an outfielder with Lance Brauer and Steve Forrester receiving honorable mention. The 1976 season was highlighted when the Vikings combined for 37 home runs, a new school record. Brauer led the team with seven home runs, tying his 1975 record. Brauer and Forrester once again lead the team in RBI's with 27 and 26 respectively. Tom Hoehamer was the leading hitter with a . 369 batting average. Chris Zahn and Randy Sparland led the pitchers in ERA's with 1. 10 and 1. 97 for the season. Sparland and Henry Lass led the Vikings in wins with three each. Viking baseball is rapidly becoming one of the finest programs in Iowa as the past three years indicate: 1974 Region X1 champions, 1975 Region Xl run- ners-up, and 1976 Region Xl runners-up. Volleyball Squad Undergoes Building Year Grand View's volleyball team faced some rigorous Iowa and midwestern college competition this year and came out with airecord of victories slightly below 50 per cent. We were a 'very young and inexperienced team, said Coach Karne Bason. Captain Shelley Lein was the only returning veteran for the Vikings. Only three other players had any competitive experience in Volleyball. The last few games showed tremendous progress in court awareness and the ability to handle and spike the ball. Each player showed moments of glory. Next year should be an exciting season with nine Veteran players returning. V P I I P' Golf Team Suffers Disappointing Year Grand View's golfers battled rain, wet courses and disappointing perform- ances this spring. The golfers fought to a 2 win, 6 loss, 1 tie year. The out- standing victory was an 11 to 4 trouncing of Centerville, a team which battled i back to a '75 to 742 tie later in the year. The Viking also defeated Creston. Regional Tennis Champions The Iowa J' UCO 's are now playing a Fall tennis schedule, rather than competing in the spring. The Grand View team finished the season with a '7-1 record, and also won the team title in the Region- al meet held in Marshalltown. Randy Hillaholt and Randy Bergstrom finished first in the doubles competition.
