The 1975 Yearbook Is Dedicated to Mrs. Jeanice Noyes, Professor of Speech Mrs. Noyes retired from the Grand View faculty in the spring, concluding 30 years of ervice. She is known for her pet phrase, Hitch your sternum to a star. Mrs. Noyes asked nothing of her students that she did not ask of herself. Her career is illed with achieved challenges. In 1935 she graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Expression degree. fter teaching in a high school at Pocahontas, Iowa for two years, she returned to Drake to their Children's Theatre. She did graduate work at the University of Southern Cali- and received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Iowa. She founded es Moines Communit Children's Theatre and established the S eech and Theatre De- at Grand View in 1945. our theatre program. said Mrs. Noyes. Y P At that time there were three buildings on campus, a faculty of 15 and a student old storage room in the basement of the Seminary House on Boyd Street, so that's I taught. In the spring of the second year the members of that class produced three, , q of 150. The only room we could fmd for a classroom for the 'Speech' class was the I plays in the chapel of Old Main, which remains our theatre. That was the beginning Yet, with all of these accomplishments, Mrs. Noyes said, I still feel that my major achievement lies in the help I have been able to give young people in gaining confidence and speech skills in the classroom. I have met literally hundreds of young people that I have enjoyed knowing and they have en- riched my life tremendously. To have watched many of them progress into fme men and women who have made great con- ltributions to our society is, in itself, the greatest satisfaction a teacher can know. Being a past student of Mrs. Noyes, I believe her career has been satisfying because she put her entire being into it. I have never met a more vibrant, challenging teacher. On behalf of the hundreds of young people, I thank you lMrs. Noyes. D If V For 15 years, she directed, built scenery, made lighting systems and with the aid of a former house- mother, Mrs. Anna Rasmussen, designed and sewed all the costumes. A book at the Grand View library holds the memories of these plays. In 1960, Mr. Charles Dickson joined the Grand View faculty. He began directing plays as Mrs. Noyes continued to work on building-up the curriculum. When the three year program began at Grand View, the Speech and Drama Department was one of the first to be ad- mitted. Outside her work at Grand View, Mrs. Noyes wrote a textbook, CORE KNOWLEDGE FOR SUC- CESSFUL SPEECH, published in 1969 by Scott Fores- man and Co. In 1967, she was awarded the Distinguished Service.Award from the professional speech fraternity, Zeta Phi Eta. Mrs. Noyes is a member of their education- al board and continues to write for their educational speech publication, CAMEO. She was listed in the 1966- 67 edition of WHO'S WHO OF AMERICAN WOMEN, and recently in COMMUNITY LEADERS AND NOTE- WORTHY AMERICANS. Mrs. Noyes is also a member of various social, honorary drama and writing organiza- tions '-0-thai
