We turn it over in wonder - energy, warmth, light - like a great gold coin, an unattainable treasure. lt rings true. But it is not ours to keep. Observed, respected, it is the source of mystery, as once it was the source of fear. Now, we have shed the fear and retain the wonder. Slowly the unknown, under our questioning eyes, yields up its secrets and reveals new shapes, new worlds, new possibilities. We go out, like children, into the vastness of space and bring back news. The sun shimmers in the sky, in the telescope. The patient watchers gaze into space, waiting, wondering . . . Alastair Reid The Eleventh President of Grand View College . Karl F. Langrock THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE As I write this, the year has barely begun. When you read this, the year will nearly be over. I have many hopes for this year. Some will be realized. Others will not. One of my greatest hopes for the year is that we will realize a sense of community at Grand View Collegeg that we will be bound together by common purposes and common goals. We are gathered at Grand View to pursue knowledge, seek wisdom, and achieve understanding of ourselves and our world. And we undertake this common task as students, teachers and ad- ministrators with the understanding that we share the burden of success or failure. How well we achieve these goals is somewhat reflected in this yearbook - to the extent that time deadlines allow. Years from now I 'hope that you can look back, recognizing old friends and associates and feel that there was indeed the spirit of community present at Grand View. And that within that community there were those to whom one was indebted for help and guidance. I Having been at Grand View but three months, it is dyffcult for me to know the depths and complexities of lyfe at Grand View. However, even in this short time it is evident to me that I have in- herited, as have you, from Dr. Ernest D. Nielsen and those who have gone on before, a tradition in education that emphasizes a concern A for high quality in personal relationships, inspiration for service to fellow mankind, and the discovery of values for living. To them we acknowledge our debt and pledge our fidelity. Lastly, in this yearbook we honor our student body. After all, a college without students is no college at all. A college exists for its students and Grand View is no exception. Therefore, I salute the students of Grand View in the year 1972-73. My best wishes to you all for a lU'ef7lled with wisdom and a sense of well-being. May peace be yours. KA +T1..,.,,,x X xv! X. ,--.4 .Eb I ,7 fy ff J, ,,., ,I Jx O ,-. v'1 I rl X ,4 K L I. The purpose of the program continues to be one that allows the better dent to remain at Grand View while completing a third year of undergraduate study. Grand View has arranged coordi- ated curriculum requirements with the State University of Iowa, Iowa State University, University of Northern lowa, rake University, and Simpson College. Dana College of Blair, Nebraska has joined this list of cooperating schools this ear. Political Science has been added to the areas of academic concentration included in the program. The other areas volved are Biology, English, History, Sociology, Speech, Drama, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. The presence of this year's juniors on the cam- pus has enriched the quality of student life at Grand V9 M View, as many students are in key positions of p - , 'Q leadership and service to the school. The enthus- iasm for learning, the desire for academic excell- ence, and willingness to participate in the life of the College are all characteristics of these juniors I who reflect what is the spirit of Grand View. npr I 6 I ' KI, H atrial X. li, . .. ,' , V gs- - . v A X i W t ,eu is -52 n 'R 3 W '71 n -1 6 I 1 1 x X fi! 7 .A l Marilyn Anderson Sandi Aspengren Jean Joy Babcock Debbie Beal Elementary Education Drake University Drake University Elementary Edu cation Sociology English .5 wt f' M 5- wh , tr EQ 'WX -4, V A 1. - ., - ' h 3 ,I 'Q , -.A V - -1 'Q ' 'un' .3 .-UE, 5 , ,di James Becktel Carolyn Bowers David Drake Jean Drew Drake University Drake University Drake University Drake University Sociology Elementary Education Political Science Elementary Education ih- be 3 X tt, oK.HIHi, f I Robert Drew Jane Dunning Eugene Gering David Holmgren Drake University Elementary Education Drake University Drake University Sociology Political Science History ,gg t..:f--i.irf- xt X it Sis? is r 'f ui mb b -Tir? We shall carry forth the thrills and disappointments that have beset us. Through the efforts of the U. K. Council, 1972-73 has been a tremendous year for all of us at Grand View College. We experienced shortcomings, as well as success. Through our mistakes we learned and improved. Wehave serprecedents for future U. K. Councils to consider. Thank you, President Langrock and Grand View College. May Grand View continue to grow and pros- per, and provide the realistic education that is meaningful to all of us. We have learned, we have shared, and we have grown. As we accept the responsibility of adulthood, we shall do so earnestly, for Grand View has made its mark in our lives. IGN Ai!! Q? The Viking staff is happy to present its 1973 edition. We take pride in this finished product, and even more pride if the time, energy, and resources which were amassed to achieve this publication. We hope you will find many fond memo- ries tucked away in these pages, as we have pleasant recollections of putting it all together. To those of you who really care about your yearbook: we welcome your criticism--indeed, we are prepared for it. But lest you speak too soon, bear in mind that this volume is the fruit of the labors of a skeleton crew--a group so small in l number, and yet so dedicated. Undoubtedly we failed to cover every event or activity, every happening at GVC this past year, but time, and manpower were in short supply. We tried our best to reflect this year as all the students saw it, and lived it, and the result is a tribute to the principals on the staff none of whom has ever worked on a yearbook before. Many thanks to Jean Babcock, Laurre Rump, and Cyndi Dowie for their efforts. And a special thank you to Eric Martell for his etching to promote the National Gymnastic meet which GVC will host again this year. His was a beautiful effort from one who is not even on our staff. It is hardest for me to express my gratitude to my most faithful co -workers who gave of their days and nights to see this yearbook to completion. Whether it was a specific apathy toward the yearbook, or just the current who gives adamn trend that has spread from campus to campus, the result was the same--we were only three, and Mrs. Chinn, who cared. You might call it a labor of love for the Pandas. The Girl Friday of our office has to be Sue Mitchell--always there when we needed her to get a signature, write a caption, set up a layout, or read some copy. No glamorous title for her--she did the odd jobs that had to be done, and she did them well. To our chief photographer, Greg Morford, thank you for being such a perfectionist. On call at any hour to snap that must photograph, he would then develop the pictures, and even help with their sizing and layout. We really appreciate the prints from his private collection, and most of all, we'l1 never forget his Don't be sad--be glad when we were stricken with those occasional yearbook blues. We were three novices, and so our publication owes much of its success to Mrs. Luana Chinn, who patiently taught us once--and then again--when our first efforts failed, or were sent back by the publisher, or maybe didn't look just right. She was the one who understood, who never tired of explaining it another way--we all thank her for helping to make the 1973 Viking a reality. And to all of you who will read the Viking today, next year, and many years from now--enjoy. May God Bless, Hmm Editor gr, qi' - 'is-5132 fir. So odd that in our instruction We learn of the pavement's nature to spread herself with wax, that our rubber souls cannot check. So odd that We annul this knowledge once in action. The Chevy pulls out, we cannot stop. The roads cannot come to our aid, but force us to Our Destiny. What, no crash-signal! In apprehension We BRAKE, We S -L-I-D-E, We Crash, we die. Tim Warner ng darkness ggkdiliiifktl in 09112 2 7Vu11e HT Twenty-seven years ago, Herbert Hurley came to Grand View as instructor in mathematics and physics Quickly becoming renowned for his unusual ability in teaching, he drew to the College many students who looked forward to careers in engineering and allied professions. He drew others, too, for to those previously baffled by mathematics, he made everything clear and comprehensible. From Professor of Mathematics and Physics, Professor Hurley advanced to the position of Deang and in that role, followed by his appointment as Vice-president of Academic Affairs, he skillfully and judiciously ad- ministered the tasks of his office. In 1972, Buena Vista College honored him with the degree of Doctor of Laws. We salute Dr. Hurley for his patient, diligent serviceg his keen, logical mindg his devotion to chuch and communityg and his thoughtful, kind consideration of our problems related to Grand View College, its students, and faculty. With great admiration and deep affection and gratitude, we dedicate THE VIKING of 1973 to Dr. Herbert T. Hurley. , . :q.5. J, 1, y. The fall practice session lasted five weeks, during which time the candidates were drilled on knowledge of the game and use of skills in game-type situations, they were or- ganized physically, mentally, and socially to become functional representatives of the Grand View athletic department. Coach Yacinich attended Grand View, where he was a member of the basketball and baseball squad before transferring to Drake University, where he received his degree in 1963. Presently he is doing graduate work at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo. In addition to coaching at Grand View he is employed at Saydel High School as physical education in- structor and summer baseball coach. 1973 OUTLOOK Infield: Defense will be a key factor i.n making the spring baseball season a successful one. The team was led by the skillful playing of four outstanding freshmen: Elaine Christensen, Nadine Faber, Lori Nel- and Sherry Weiss. Carol Anderson, Chris Leonard, and Connie Porter showed tremendous progress throughout the sea- son. Liz Andringa, Pat Brosnahan, Kathy Kolar, Diane Keltner, and Polly Milliman also contributed a great deal toward team effort. In summarizing this year's team, Coach Bason states, We spent considerable time on proper technique and funda- skills, and it was rewarding. I was very pleased with the performance and the individual effort that each player on this team. Every student, with rare exceptions, is re- quired to complete two semesters of Physical Education. In the required program, students select a sequence of two ac tivities each semester. The majority of classes are coedu- cational. One hour of academic credit is earned for each semester of successful work. The student is not allowed to repeat a given sequence. Written examinations and skill tests are employed to evaluate the progress of each student To supplement the required program, Grand View College offers a comprehensive intramural program which provides additional opportunities for all students to partici- pate in wholesome activity. 152 -if , ,.. , ,,....m..,.,,, , - ,,..-. fr 16, I r: 1 ' -r7's1 F F - 93 ' - 2 ' V . . ,. ..T,i,'.T,y,,-Qjfxf. -, ,. -gn bpm Lin: -Hu. However, this year's team should prove to be one of Grand View's finest. The experience and potential of this team are very good, with such leading candidates as Doug Zaletel, Dennis Smith, Steve McPherson, Jim Ford, and Rick Church. Grand View hosted the State Junior College Tournament at Des Moines' Racquet Club for the third consecutive year. How much more there is now to living! Instead oil our drab slogging forth and back . . . , there's a reason to' life! We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can be free! . . . Jonathan Livingston Seaguli 'x She was our inspiration--our teacher, our listener. She taught an instant course in yearbook journalism to her inexperienced staff, and then weathered us through the seemingly endless problems and setbacks. Many and long were the evenings we spent at her house, trying to meet our deadlines. We profited much by her patience and confidence, but we emerged as more complete persons because she strove for excellence. ,-I f, V f. gf, ,if-J . 4 Qitvi 64' rg If 1 I my 1 E6 . -'A P' A fl J.
