This year's speech and foreign language courses were designed to help students in just this area--to speak the language. Five teachers made up the crew who worked at the communication gap. And in the process of learn- ing the mechanics of a language, including our own, students also gained insights into the people and their cultures. 'ni The English department moved ahead this year in a coordinated effort designed to help the student to be more effective in his communication with others. Although two semesters of freshmen English, emphasizing grammar and composition, were the only requirements in this area, the elective courses were also popular and beneficial. These electives focused on literature appreciation and composition. All English courses help students gain a higher level of insight into the mechanics and essence of the English language. For those who needed to express themselves in a creative direction, the Fine Arts department-was there waiting--ready to guide and to suggest. , The music department endeavored to help the , student understand and interpret music. Ensemble and J private instruction provided an opportunity for develop- I ment of individual interests. 1 Art courses included work in a variety of media. j Q The individuals were shown how these media can be f -x used most effectively, and students were allowed to express themselves freely.
