There is a developing sense of the need for generous consideration for others. Today, we see more clearly than in any previous de- cade that concern for others--beyond our OWN--brings rewards of new and significantattachments. I am persuaded that we shall see great advance in this direc- tion. A growing concern for others is very characteris- tic of the younger generation. gave expre ' As l listen to students and hear their comments about the seventy-fifth anniversary of Grand View College, l discover that it has for them a relevancy of its own. The students' wholly voluntary response to the observance of September 27, 1971, was truly magnifi- cent. ln and through their participation they showed the importance to the entire academic community of generous consideration of the long list of individuals-- leaders, students, and friends--who at various periods of the last seventy-five years left their mark on the development of Grand View College. The students' excellent response to enter into planned festivities, dispels any possible notion that students today are less supportive than preceding generations of Grand View students. There are changing values in college. The role K of students is growing. There is a new ring to voluntarism on the campuses of America, including Grand View College. lf l grasp the sense of the '7O's, student participation in meaningful experiences on the campus and BEYOND the campus will bring a new vitality to voluntarism and may prove to be effectively productive. It is propitious for any good college to take fruitful advantage of students' growing awareness of the need to translate their youthful concern for others into vital programs. The new interim period in the college's calendar offers possibilities for innovative ways in which to extend the experiences of students. It will be interesting to watch the developments, but this will become the responsibility of others. There is one area from which there is no escape for a college president as long as he is in office. I refer to his role in obtaining funds for the institution he heads. Grand View College's student body gives us a corps of volunteers. A college's student body is a future source of financial support. From the standpoint that they know and understand their own college, students are in a position to become partners in the work of giv- ing and soliciting funds that will help to maintain Grand.View College and cause it to become a truly important educational institution. lt is John Masefield who said, There are few things more splendid than a University . . . more en- I during . . . more beautiful. But the private college cannot fulfill its mission in the decades ahead of us .Kr without financial support from all of its friends, in- cluding the alumni. William Graham Sumner, who distinguished himself as professor of political and social science at Yale, wrote in 1870: ' No graduate of the college has ever paid in full what it cost the college to educate him . . . If every graduate who could afford it should give the college ten dollars, and others should give more in propor- tion Qas they can affordp, we should enter upon a plan whose financial soundness is unquestioned. We should be applying principles which are thoroughly in sympathy with the idea of this popular and democratic age, and we should reach results which we can never attain by waiting for the tardy generosity of a few men of extraordinary wealth. As my tenure as President of Grand View College comes to its close, I want to express on behalf of Mrs. Nielsen and myself our heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to serve Grand View College. We shall al- ways regard ourselves as members of the Grand View family. It is my earnest hope that my successor may be richly blessed in all of his efforts to build Grand View College into a great institution of higher education. I express my deep felt thanks to the entire college community for the opportunity that I have had to work together with administrators, faculty members, and students. 772 ew 72 But a college is also served by the many individ uals who are responsible for supplying the many needed supportive services. My thanks, too, to this valiant group of staff members. As the College moves into the '7O's under new leadership, I know that there will be new vistas. It is the constant experience of the Christian community-- whether in church or college--that life is renewable. In- deed, the words of the Apostle Paul are also applicable to an educational institution under the auspices of the Church, Behold, all things are become new. Auld- 97 711251-U Ernest D. Nielsen September 29, 1971 74 willy 254. ddamffwmtteftadmta What makes a man, A man? To the man of tomorrow, A dream, To the man of yesterday, A memory, To the man of today, Watching his dreams come true. Ernest Nielsen is a man. He had a dream. He has seen it fulfilled. He remembers. Yet he does not cease to dream. In our world, we walk quickly, Talk shortly, Live little. Few reach to touch the lives around them. Dr. Nielsen has reached, And touched, And cared. Here no campus riots, No protests or student takeovers, No antagonism. Our Dr. Nielsen is not a warrior, But a man of peace. To most of us, he seems bustling and distant, fy Mmm fifwwqoat Not cold, Just far away-- A shadow behind our own presence here. As long as we have been on earth, He has been here. He has spent twenty years Working for a generation-- Molding this college into what it is today. Now, his final year here-- And we are here too. It is sad that he must go now, In our year ofjubilee, Yet it is a fitting time, A just tribute. We can be glad we are here too. For Dr. Nielsen, The proud and noble Dane, Has served while he has led, Has dreamed amidst drudgery, Has refused to despair. He has finished the course, He has kept the faith. May we gently protest the departure of such a man-- He dreams, He remembers, He sees his dreams come true. -S-ar ,1?f:r'f'3?3a:.:--.nn-475.1,-V1-I-gg-.1-::J--. -1 - --I-f W ,---f- --' - --- W '- --.--- A W ' ' ' ' ' ' F' A H 7i'A TTT V 'f'-F ' A ' vw V' W Y ' ' K ' 5, ...,4, , . . . . A., X fy , j ' , 4 , Third -year students at Honors Seminar. wuofa7fwqfwcm llmxyw One of the unique educational programs in the country is the Three -Year Program at Grand View College. Under the initiative and leadership of Dr. Ernest D. Nielsen, Grand View College, in cooperation with several of the degree -granting institutions in the state of Iowa, has developed an educational program in which excellent students have the opportunity to complete three years of their undergraduate program before transferring to one of the co- operating schools. At the present time, the Three -Year Program has arranged coordinated curriculum requirements with the following schools: The State University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa State University at Ames, University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, Drake University at Des Moines, and Simpson College at lndianola. The academic areas of concentration in which the program operates include: Biology, English, History, Sociology, Speech, Drama Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. i - This is the third year that Grand View has had juniors on the campus. There are twenty-five juniors in the program this year, and this number represents a steady growth in numbers since the beginning of the program. Stu- dents from the two previous years who have transferred to the cooperating schools have done well and have made the transition to these institutions with a minimum of difficulty. The Three-Year Program has had an important influence in the life of Grand View in two very meaningful ways. First of all, it has given the good students an opportunity 'to participate in an enriched curriculum program for an additional year, with a faculty and classroom environment tha.t they have found to be worthwhile. Secondly, the presence and the contributions of these students to the classroom and to the campus life of the College have enriched Grand View. There is every hope that these influences will continue' to grow and become more meaningful as the 9 Three -Year Program continues to grow. Special mention should be made of the Honors Seminar which gives all of the third -year students an oppor- tunity for a learning experience that is hoped will aid them in their subsequent educational situations. The Seminar also provides the opportunity for the juniors to have a common experience that helps develop a sense of unity and an X ESPRIT DE CORPS within the group. The Honors Seminar is organized on an interdisciplinary basis, and the active participation and willing cooperation of the Grand View faculty provides an enriching experience for all those in- volved. During an era of a good many innovations in education, Grand View can be pleased with the progress and initial results of this unique plan. It is with every confidence that Grand View College will continue to enrich the lives creasing numbers of students in the Three -Year Program. Wilber I. K. President's Message Our days as students of Grand View College have concluded. Grand View granted to usall the opportunity to educate ourselves. lt is now our responsibility to meet the future. lf our attainments here become only a memory, then the future will present insurmountable difficulties. However, if we exercise the knowledge gained at Grand View, together with wisdom, then we may overcome any obsta cle. By doing this, we shall be paying Grand View College the highest possible tribute. We, the Unge Kraefter 'or powerful youth of today, shall have transformed ourselves into the useful citizens of society. Therefore, carry not a flickering candle from Grand View but a blazing torch, so that all may see the light of education. For in education, there lies a better tomorrow. U. K. President William A. Since Grand View is celebrating its seventy-fifth year, we tried to make this Viking something special, something of which the students, faculty, and administration could be proud. There was a lot of hard work put in on this Viking and I extend my sincere thanks to each member of the Viking Staff. .And so another year passes and another Viking comes out. In this book we have tried to capture the happenings of the seventy -fifth year of Grand View whether big or small. I hope this year's Viking has done just that. I hope that when you look at it in five or ten years, it will bring to mind the pleasant thoughts of Grand View 's Jubilee Year. It shows. Just take a look at the campus. What a happy blending of age and youth! From the regal dignity of Old Main to the simple modern strength of the library, young and old are yoked in a common bond of service. It is, in fact, the bond of service that has made Grand View College seventy-five years young and strong. The community has come to rely upon Grand View for academic eicellence. Generations of young lowans have laid the foundations of theircareers upon the patience and service of the Grand View staff. One of the key reasons for a seventy-five year history of quality is the fact that this college has con- sistently attracted faculty members who are interested, not only in the teaching profession, but also in life -time careers at Grand View. Members of the administration fit the same category. Grand View College, its stu- dents, its needs, its joys, are all woven into the very fabric of their lives. This same sort of involvement is evident within the constituency of the board of direc- tors. We believe these men and women epitomize the skill, diplomacy, and determination which have made Grand View College a symbol of personalized academic excellence. 4 In memory of seventy-five years of collective patient service and disciplined classroom love, we, the 1972 Viking Staff, dedicate this year's annual to a group of persons, rather than just one. fillwrlk 1 -I 1 V ,,.g.i,f.e,.aa - Administrators Herbert T.
