Viking Deolicoltecl to Mrs. Williolmson For the past twenty-one years Mrs. Williamson has been a loyal servant of Grand View College. To the students she is a friendg to her colleagues, a willing co-workerg to her church, a devoted servantg and to her community, a respon- sible citizen. In recognition of her unstinting efforts in the performance of her tasks, we respectfully dedicate the Vik- ing of 1969. :sk .rr e A ,Q- 5 W as ef ,. gf s ., :Q M EY 'fs F. , , Q . 1 'E may iii-.nf .tn 1 K ? Concomitantly, l cannot think ofthe new buildings without mentioning the evident emergence of a new spirit and a new image. The brochure prepared for the dedication festivities gave striking expression to the same thought in the phrase: This is the new Grand View . . . I am confident that you, the students, have caught the spirit of change, and that you interpret this change as Grand View's forthright response to the need for educational institutions to move imaginatively and cre- atively from serving the few to serving society as a whole. Personally, I like to think that the expansion is indi- cative of growth. Grand View is not isolated from the mainstream of modern life. It faces all disciplines open- ly, yet, in a Christian framework. The new interest in Grand View, so magnificently reflected in the attendance at the dedication, Sunday, October 27, 1968, is related to the fact that the knowledgeable person knows that knowledge is an increasing necessity of life. What is happening here on our campus is of great concern and interest to the general public. The College is presenting a new image to the public. Human inquiry must constantly be nurtured by extending the growing edge of knowledge, the body of ac- cumulated knowledge must be transmitted, and learning, study, life, and work in a residential college should be a unique experience. I know that students are looking not only for facilities, but also for changes which will be innovative and experimental. Fortunately, the new is not unrelated to the past. Grand View is very rich in tradition. lt always has maintained that what matters most in life is an education for life. lt wants to serve, serve freely, but the price of that commitment is high! Yet, it will pay dividends. Who can put a price tag on life? I hope that you, in five or ten years, will be challenged to make your contribution so that another generation of students will arise and say, as you have good reason to say this year, What we have witnessed at Grand View this unforgettable year is the emergence of new signs of Grand View's indispensable role in the life of church and society. During the week of orientation of the freshmen, and the return of the sovereign sophomore, it scheduled a dance in cooperation with U. K. It also planned a successful hay-ride and hootenanny. The hootenanny was held in the Catacomb with live entertainment and hot chocolate. lt also helped sponsor, with all of the other activity groups on campus, a winter carni- val, complete with games and a band. During the Christmas season, with the assistance of the faculty it was able to provide fun, food, and entertainment for the children living in the urban renewal area. Again, as in the past, it published and sold the Student Directories. All in all, it has been another year of fun and activity for the Town Club. Coffee House The Catacomb Coffeehouse is a newly established orga- nization on campus this year. The basement of the old girls' dormitory was fully decorated and main- tained by the Catacomb Board throughout the year. During the year the Catacomb has pledged itself to the advancement of communication between the dorm, town students, and the administration. The prime purpose of the Cata- comb has been to bring to Grand View campus a place , of relaxation, enjoyment, and entertainment for all m the students.
