President Promotes Progress Dr. Neilsen is completing his fifteenth year as President of Grand View College. Presidents Message The deadline for this greeting coincides with the week in which the 450th Anniversary of the Reformation is being observed in all parts of the world. 1517-1967 covers a long period. Today, thanks to historical and theological research in the universities and colleges of Europe and America, the significance of 1517 for the whole modern world probably is better understood than ever. It is no longer the exclusive domain of Protestant scholars. For Roman Catholic and Prot- estant scholars alike, an understanding of the Reformation is the necessary condition if we are to go beyond 1517 and a.sk what that year means in terms of faith, freedom, and culture in our day. Naturally, I cannot discuss that here. How- ever, I do wish to point out just one of the far-reaching effects of the Reformation on education. Luther elevated the position of the teacher to a CALLING. In other words, he introduced into the task of teaching not only a God-given purpose for a secular vocation, but religious orientation and motivation for teaching. Religious energy thus released and channeled into teaching leaves an identifying mark upon the teacher. If the heart of the schools is the teacher, we are greatly indebted to the Reformation heritage and its effect upon education. It gave new life not only to the church, but to schools, colleges, and universities. It' is a heritage which belongs to all of us, not the least in our time which is open to genuine ecumenical efforts. The graduates of Grand View College can render a distinguished service to Christian higher education by becoming spokes- men for the kind of educational institution that Grand View represents.

The Pastor Is Here to Help t R Rev. Clyde Norrgard makes announcements at con- vocation. Pastor Norrgard is advisor to the student Christian Fellowship and offers his counsel to all groups on campus. One of his concerns is encouraging students in their personal growth in faith. In addition to the religious pro- gram on campus he helps students maintain a relationship with the church of their choice in Des Moines. Since the fall of 1966, Grand View College has had a full time Campus Pastor in the person of The Rev. Clyde L. Norrgard. As a Pastor, he tries to be available to the students for counselling and conversation. The topics are varied as students pose their questions, state their problems, and seek their answers. As Chairman of the Convocation Committee, he works with this committee in securing programs and pre- sentations which are beneficial and interesting. 2 Pastor Norrgard is always willing to help the students.
