The ever-growing but friendly student body promises an even finer Grand View College for those who join our campus in the future. Education does not exist without the obligation to understand, develop, and meet the problems of all involved. Fulfilling this obligation requires knowledge, skill, appre- ciation, and understanding. The Administration brings this to the students and theyfin turn participate freely. The Grand View College faculty thus endeavors to prepare .the student to useful participation in community and church life and at the same time seeks to prepare the way to continued academic studies and professional training for the students. ' The daily walks from dorms to classes and their many memories will linger with both students and faculty for many years to come. racious and Mighty 1. 2. 3. 4. od Gracious and mighty God Shield what our hands have wrought! Rodholm Deducahon to Mrs. We , the of service to Wilkinson has dents for the annual to Mrs. Wulkmson 1968 VIKING staff, proudly dedicate this Matilda Wilkinson. We note her ten years Grand View College with gratitude. Mrs. devoted many hours in preparing her stu- business world. Her enthusiasm and ex- pression will stay with the students. They will look upon their business classes at Grand View with fondness and realize the help and guidance she gave them. To you, Mrs. Wilkinson, the VIKING staff wishes to say thanks, President Promotes Progress Dr. Neilsen is completing his fifteenth year as President of Grand View College. Presidents Message The deadline for this greeting coincides with the week in which the 450th Anniversary of the Reformation is being observed in all parts of the world. 1517-1967 covers a long period. Today, thanks to historical and theological research in the universities and colleges of Europe and America, the significance of 1517 for the whole modern world probably is better understood than ever. It is no longer the exclusive domain of Protestant scholars. For Roman Catholic and Prot- estant scholars alike, an understanding of the Reformation is the necessary condition if we are to go beyond 1517 and a.sk what that year means in terms of faith, freedom, and culture in our day. Naturally, I cannot discuss that here. How- ever, I do wish to point out just one of the far-reaching effects of the Reformation on education. Luther elevated the position of the teacher to a CALLING. In other words, he introduced into the task of teaching not only a God-given purpose for a secular vocation, but religious orientation and motivation for teaching. Religious energy thus released and channeled into teaching leaves an identifying mark upon the teacher. If the heart of the schools is the teacher, we are greatly indebted to the Reformation heritage and its effect upon education. It gave new life not only to the church, but to schools, colleges, and universities. It' is a heritage which belongs to all of us, not the least in our time which is open to genuine ecumenical efforts. The graduates of Grand View College can render a distinguished service to Christian higher education by becoming spokes- men for the kind of educational institution that Grand View represents. The Pastor Is Here to Help t R Rev. Clyde Norrgard makes announcements at con- vocation. Pastor Norrgard is advisor to the student Christian Fellowship and offers his counsel to all groups on campus. One of his concerns is encouraging students in their personal growth in faith. In addition to the religious pro- gram on campus he helps students maintain a relationship with the church of their choice in Des Moines. Since the fall of 1966, Grand View College has had a full time Campus Pastor in the person of The Rev. Clyde L. Norrgard. As a Pastor, he tries to be available to the students for counselling and conversation. The topics are varied as students pose their questions, state their problems, and seek their answers. As Chairman of the Convocation Committee, he works with this committee in securing programs and pre- sentations which are beneficial and interesting. 2 Pastor Norrgard is always willing to help the students. tudents Are HurIey's Responsibility Mr. Herbert Hurley, Vice-President for Academic Af- fairs. At Grand View, English I and II, as well as speech, are required of all freshman students. The majority of courses in the department are elective, and all are designed to improve the student's appreciation and command of his language. Concern is shown for correctness in spoken and written communication. The teachers strive to cultivate in their students an awareness and enjoyment of great literature and, in fact, all of the humanities. Cleo Williamson Ralph Speer Richard Weinberg A.B., M.S. History I ocial tudies Retraces Social science examines human behavior. It strives, always, to gain a. better understanding of this behavior, and perhaps, to some degree, to predict behavior and its consequences. The social science courses at Grand View are con- cerned with the individual or societial behavior which has spanned all time and every situation. These courses should greatly benefit the student, for only an awareness of behavior can effect an improvement. fb'-K fa, Stephen Rye Egon Bodtker B.S., M,A, B.A., M.A. History History . fi? 7'.1'i?i , , , H wnmwvlga, giar fi Miiltffiii ,441 frLLz2myi,,-.gj,. These paths and the experiences met on them enrich the academic life at Grand View College. A variety of organizations encourage char- acter and personality development. Students often need the change of pace that extra- curricular activity provides. At Grand View, the students can participate in drama, journalism, student govern- ment and other associations. Members of such organizations cooperate in striding toward their common goals. This achievement in turn leads to the betterment of college. This enthusiastic group of girls who do not live in the dormitory, was sponsored by Miss Mener Jensen. The club met in the basement of the Women's Residence both for their meetings and more informally for lunch and study hours. Through their many activities, the girls formed new friendships at Grand View. Its objectives are to promote and direct the social life of the students, to promote discussion and resolution of the problems inherent in the student life of a progressive institution of higher education, and to promote beneficial rela- tionships among the students, administration and faculty of Grand View. Each year Grand View College undergoes an increment of change 3 indeed, an increment of progress. So it is hoped, will the U.K. Council. With the adoption of the new constitution this year, the emphasis of U.K. has been shifted to res- olution of student problems. We have been extremely fortunate to have had a progressive and forward looking adminis- tration that is sensitive to the needs of its students. We have not, nor can we, solve all the problems inherent in student life, but we hope each year some progress will be made. While Grand View is changing and growing, we hope U.K. will change and grow with itg helping the students become Dynamic Adults of tomorrow. Sue Brown Danny Burkhead The U,K, Council has been very active this year. It has taken steps forward in various areas. Three stand- ing committees--for special events, weekend activities, and the operation of the coffeehouse Yours--worked under the council to provide students with a variety of activities. U,K, promoted school spirit by arranging the first official Skip Day for Grand View College. It also represented the student body through initiating and encouraging changes. Although not every road was open to the council, it advanced quite successfully on many that could be trav- eled. A new constitution, approved by the student body in early October, guided this year's council effectively and widened the paths for councils of the future. S.C.F. Offers Fellowship to tudents Barb Miller, Rollin Buck, Sally Stroup, Ann Stevenson. As a college organization the Student Christian Fellowship provides the college student with an opportunity for religious fellowship with other college students. The activities of S.C.F. are varied. On week nights devotions are open to all. Those involved in the devotions share the wonderful experience of fellowship with others. For the opportunity to discuss popular issues of the day, regular meetings are held. These meetings include special speakers, and movies for discussion. S.C.F, sponsors feature films for the benefit of all G.V.C. students on campus during the weekends. The Student Christian Fellowship is open to all college students. Every student who has some particular interest, whether it be dramatics, social work, writing, or music, need not fail to have it satisfied in one of G.V.C.'s many activities. It concerns the new textbooks which have been purchased by the school this semester. It used to be that a student could look on the bulletin board, find an ad for books, and then buy from the person posting the ad. But not this semester. True, the bulletin board with the book ads are still there, but no one buys the books because many teachers are de- manding that only the latest editions be used for their classes. One history teacher remarked in class that the only dif- ference between the old and new editions of his classroom text was that the new one had different pictures and a new cover. On hearing this, one student tried to return her new book to the book store. They would not take it because every- one is supposed to have the new edition. The freshmen have new English texts this year, provok- ing' comments such as ls the English language changing so rapidly that the old text was out of date ? and Before long, English teachers may be demanding that a student buy a. new edition of Hamlet We wonder if it was really necessary that the school pur- chase so many new books, thereby making it difficult for both the buyer and the student who wishes to sell his old ones to save or make any money. Disregarding the economic facet of the matter, we wonder if change is synonymous with improvement in this case. We would welcome comment on the reasons for the change - ii 3 Y .- Publlr iywiifons Staffs H , and Running The ' I annual by Studenterfest next Grand HY- beg: 'here are 27 members on TP 'rand Views staff this ' . V --if .- Students Complain About New Books Since the beginning of the semester, much objection has been expressed by Grand View students about the large number of new text books that they have been required bo buy. Many of last yea.r's books have been replaced by new books or newer editions to those used last year. The theory is that the latest edi- tions contain the most recent developments in the different fields of study. Grand View students ex- pressed their views on the subject when they were asked, 'ADO you think it is necessary that text books be changed so frequently? Diane Guidicessi, sopho- more, stated: I feel that many of the book changes are unnecessary. For example, Ancient History doesn't change from year to year: so why should we be re- quired to buy a new book? It would save the student a lot of money if he could buy a used book or borrow a. previ- ously used book from a friend. Vickie Wickert, freshman, replied: Most of the information is the same in the new revised books as it was in last year's books. This means that stu- dents have to pay more money for basically the same infor- mation. Gregg Roth, sophomore, commented: I feel that the books are changed much too frequently. Neelna Madsen and Alice Bergren, from Solvaang, California, have led the folk dancers throughout the year. They have taught the students many new and old dances from the Scandinavian heritage. The folk dancers have performed at many functions outside of Grand View including Women's Clubs and schools throughout the state. They have planned a Folk Dance Festival at G,V.C, during the spring semester. Several colleges have been invited to attend including Grinnell, Cedar Falls, and Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. Since the gymnasium is busy with other activities, the folk dancers practice in the basement gym of Cattell School. Here's a simple equation: loyalty + pep + school spirit : the G.V.C, cheerleaders. This year's squad possessed both ability and dedication. In the glow of victory or the gloom of defeat, the cheerleaders were there, enthusiastically supporting our team. Tryouts were held in early October, when nine new cheerleaders were chosen. The new cheerleaders went through a week of initiation while wearing red and white clothes, tennies with socks rolled down, a string of Cheerios, and carrying a stuffed toy. From that week on through the season, the girls worked hard on new cheers and re-vamped old ones. Jim Wood a.nd Sue Hart worked out many double stunts which added to the effectiveness of the cheers. The cheerleaders are an integral part of the athletic events in any school as they create and boost the spirit so vital to a.ny team.
