Nielsen is completing his 14th year ,+- as chief administrator of Grand View College. Y' Grand View is fortunate to have as its leader a man ky with the ability, foresight, and personal concern for stu- . J dents exemplified by President Nielsen. He is well known . l'-- - for his friendly hello and inspiring conversations with those who meet him on campus. Dealing diplomatically with the problems of students, faculty, and alumni, he steadily guides Grand View in continued progress in the field of higher Christian education. :,,.'-M in. Doctor Nielsen welcomes stu cl e nts at our opening convocation. President Completes 14th Year THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE In retrospect the year 1966-1967 will be rememberedby many, I hope, as the year in which significant steps were taken toward strengthening Grand View College. The installation of the Reverend Clyde L. Norrgard as the first full time Campus Pastor marked an innovation which, I am certain, will bear Christian fruits. There always has been a pastoral concern on the part of the faculty for the students. Things of religion and the mind are not mutually exclusive in a Christian college. We look forward to new developments and new patterns of the manifestation of student Christian life over the next several years. The enlargement of the Board of Directors to a membership of 25 is another indication of the geographical extension of the Lutheran territory from which Grand View will receive church support. The viability of the college is today unquestioned. Nowhere is the church's faith in Grand View more visible than in its decision to undertake a major financial campaign for a Greater Grand View. The building construction, which you have seen started this year, is sufficient grounds for your high expectations. The ultimate test of the quality of the college lies in the quality of its teachers and students. A college education ought to help students to learn that there are no easy answers to the problems of man and society. When Jesus said, 'fl am the way, and the truth, and the life Uohn 14:63, He bore a witness unto Himself which persistently addresses itself to man's will to believe. The headlines of this morning's newspaper tell me in disappointing words: No answer to war problems seen in talks. As never before, Christian men and women are challenged to take seriously the full implications of the Christian faith for every area of human life. We must continue to build ever more firmly on the surest of all foundations. IO apable Men Directed the Year Mr. Herbert Hurley, Dean Working closely together these men weld the business, academic, and student-related aspects of Grand View College into a smoothly operative unit. Since 1961 the Office of Admissions under the direc- tion of Kenneth W. Paulsen, has overseen the activities of admitting, orienting, and interviewing all students as they become affiliated with the college. Our guidance' department has been supervised for several years by Dean Hurley, His duties include both counseling and scheduling of students and keeping files on all attending Grand View. ,G- Mr. Kenneth Paulsen, Admissions Mr. Harry Jensen, Business Manager For some 20 years, students at Grand View have looked upon Business Manager Harry C. Jensen as friend and financial advisor. He is the chief business officer of the College and manages the entire school as designated by the President. In a diplomatic way he solves the varied financial problems which cross his desk. Completing his third year as Director of Student Affairs, Ronald P. Maigaard assists in the counseling and guidance program and aids students in handling expenses. He also worked with the students in coordinating campus activities. TTT. . ml! As official governing body of Grand View College, the Board of Directors was responsible fon approving budgets, determining operational policies, approving selec- tion of faculty and administration officers and guiding the future expansion of the college. The Board of Directors has approved plans for several new building projects. By the spring of 1968, there will appear on the Grand View campus, a new 2-story, 20,800 square feet, air conditioned library. Also, plans are being made for the construction of a new two-story science and classroom building to be connected to the present science building. The building will include ten classrooms, one lecture hall, four laboratories, a green- house and ten faculty offices. A women's dormitory to house approximately 120 women to be located just north of the men's dormitory, is planned for completion in 1968. College Employs Pastor I2 The installation of the Reverend Clyde L.Norrgard as a full-time campus pastor was made at Convocation on September 22, 1966. With his donut dunking sessions he endeavored to relate faith and learning in the academic community, to provide pastoral counseling for all students, and to create opportunities for group discussions and voluntary service projects. Reverend Mr. Norrgard came to Grand View from churches in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Reverend Mr. Norrgard is an important linkbetween Gra.nd View College and the pastors and churches of the community. He invites students to come to his office any time. He will be glad to talk to you. The 20th century has brought forth a phenomenal growth in the accepta.r1ce and appreciation of fine arts in the United States. For today's student, fine arts offer an opportunity to pursue an academic and cultural background, to develop the practical side of the arts and to understand the power of communication through the fine arts. It has been said that music is a language understood by all. Courses in music not only seek to teach students understanding, but also the ability to interpret music in various ways. Students were givenanopportunity to develop their interests through ensemble or private instruction. Specialized training is provided for students preparing for teaching or advanced musical training. In the art department, students have an opportunity to express themselves in many media. The courses in art provide basic instruction in the use of art materials either as a foundation for students interested in art professionally or for students who desire to teach on the elementary or secondary school level. As one may see, our cover design could be easily outlined as a Viking ship, and also as a lamp. The Vikings were a fearless group of people who fought for what they believed, and weren't afraid to go after what they wanted and needed. Therefore, they built sturdy ships that could carry them through their toughest battles. Our annual staff has been working hard to build for our student body a strong ship such as the Viking ships of old. We want your memories of the past and firm convictions for the future to have a stable ship on which to board 'and sail onward to the future. Therefore, each one of us has tried to be a peg or a board holding your ship together. However, ships need light to navigate which brings into view the 'second outline of our cover design--a lighted lamp. Light makes for smooth sailing in any task. In our task, the light of education could never be forgotten. Our staff has tried to stress the .fact that through the light of . education, our strong ship can sail on to greater feats. We ,x N, . , fa know our seas will be roughg but if our light is strong, we :nrt .- 1,-' THJZK:-7jmT71i4iwlfir will see a sandy beach on the other side. 29 Gran. Co-editors . . . . . Grand View College is shining forth a light more resplendent than all of its seventy year history. One could say that Grand View is experiencing a rebirth or a period of enlightenment. In 1966-1967 tremendous gains have taken place in every aspect of college lifeg fund raising and long-range expansion projects, added educational facilities, growth in student enrollment and social activities. One reflection of Grand View's light is the UK Council. This year we have been engulfed by its spirit and we have met the increasing demands connected with this growth through the planned social activitis and strengthening of the student- faculty relations. The light of Grand View will not be extinguished. The glow of U.K. will continue to shine. 4 1 1 Roz A2 Grand View Grow - 0 c W-A . : ,-!. in ' f A I tid dies? ravi 6034 A-b sl 1 f N 1 H -- 'YQ its , 1 . The bright red and white circular skirted costumes of the Show Stoppers, added to the pep and vitality of the members, helped make their per- formances at convocations and basketball games sparkle. 61 v .5 Cheerleaders Sparkea I ROW 1: Jeanne McKee, Rebecca'Herbo1d. X Yiiii The bounce and zip of the cheerleaders sparked a contagious school spirit among G.V.C. students whether the Vikings faced victory or defeat. At practices held on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00, the cheer- leaders learned new cheers and revised the old ones in order to lead the team onto their many victories. When game time arrived, the eight yell leaders combined their practices into spontaneous enthusiam radiating this to all the loyal Viking fans. Any day of the school year, the gymnasts could be observed as they made the most of the available gym space. The strength and dedication of the entire club makes them deserving of the recognition by the year- book staff as Oustanding Activity of the Year. Besides highlight performances at Parents' Day and Studenterfest, there were exhibitions at basketball games, at high schools in Roland, Earlham, Belmond, Nevada, North Des Moines and Dallas Center and at Ellsworth and Simpson Colleges. Returning members of the club were Linda Geis- singer and Janice Lewis, floor exercises, Karen Carl- son and Annetta Peterson on the balance beam, Randy Hamilton and Gerald Perdue. Freshmen standouts were Roxanne Stremming for floor exercises, Colleen Patrick on the uneven bars and Paul Ringnald. The Danish Woman's Gymnastics Group was established this year under the leadership of Karen Madsen, who came to Grand View from Denmark. The rhythm ball exercises are among her favorites. The exercises are done step-by-step with music, and are very feminine and graceful. The first semester the group practiced with the intention of giving exhibitions second semester. It is Karen's desire that in the course of her teaching, the students will gain satisfaction from their own activities as well as from her instruction. This balance routine with a rhythm ball is performed by Colette Rutenbeck. Gymnastics Went Danish Karen Madsen leads the group of girls through a rhythm ball routine which calls for grace and precision. 67 Intramurals Had The intramural athletic program at Grand View, under the direction of Charles Jacobson is well rounded and provides opportunities for anyone who wishes to participate. The intramural golf championship was won this year by Dale Hanke. John Kirke and Doug Olsen were the close contenders. Doug Kidder took the championship in the archery competiton with Mike Thornhill as runner-up. The coveted football championship was won by the Roughriders in the fall. Traditionally the Ancients provided stiff competition as the several intramural basketball teams contended for the first place position. Some very fine scores were rolled in the intra- mural bowling league. Many times the teams were separated by only a few pins. The championship was won by the team of Bill Halbach, Carol Johnson, Steve Conkel and Duane Johnson who were known as the Ten Pins. High averages were held by Connie Michelson and Roy Jones who also had the high game of 259. Volleyball, badminton and table tennis were other intramural activities that were enjoyed by the Grand View students and faculty. Look, up in the sky! You're ready to begin reaching for future successes. But . . . how do you measure success? Not with a caliper or a yardstick or a stopwatch . . . not by the acre or the ounce or the cubic foot. Success is intangible . . . it is the sum of your personal goals and aspirations, sorted into positions of relative importance. Whatever you establish as your criteria of success, you will need to exercise self discipline. Ambition alone is not enough . . . even coupled with intelligence and talent. Self discipline is essential to direct your energies and abilities into productive channels . . . to provide you with initiative and perserverance. Develop this quality . . . you will enjoy a more rewarding life, a more successful life. ' Ambi1ion is just the desire to succeed. The world is full of ambitiousfailures-all desire and no discipline. Self discipline is perhaps the most important qualily an intelligent person can develop in order to reach his goals. From ,an address by William A. Hewitt, Chairman, Deere 84 Company.
